SpaceX Released ONBOARD Booster 12 View Show How Exactly Mechazilla CATCH Starship...
I couldn't help but shout, "Wow!"
There were so many impressive angles of the Super Heavy catch attempt, but the one I was waiting for most-the onboard view-finally appeared, and it revealed some fascinating details. It looks like B12 may be ready for the next steps.
Meanwhile, Falcon Heavy successfully completed the Europa Clipper mission, setting important milestones and breaking records along the way. This mission paved the way for SpaceX to reach its 100th launch soon after.
October has been incredible, hasn't it?
Let’s dive into all of this in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
SpaceX Released ONBOARD Booster 12 View Show How Exactly Mechazilla CATCH Starship...
Super Heavy B12 is currently resting stably on the Orbital Launch Mount (OLM) after what Elon Musk described as a "difficult" journey. But that challenge made history, so let’s rewind and see it from a different perspective.
SpaceX recently released an onboard flight view on X, providing a stunning top-down angle. It gives us a clear view of the vast area surrounding the launch site, but naturally, the main focus is on Super Heavy’s systems.
In this view, we can clearly see the grid fins working hard to steer the booster-an essential factor in helping B12 move precisely into the middle of the chopsticks for the catch. We also witness the moment the landing burn engines activate, marked by a notable flame. Initially large, the flame reduces in size as the middle ring engines cycle on and off during the burn.
From the bottom-up view, we can see the center engines of B12 performing effectively. Beyond providing the necessary force to slow down, these gimbal engines continuously adjust their direction, guiding B12 along a precise path. SpaceX commented, "The final phase of Super Heavy's landing burn used the three center Raptor engines to precisely steer into catch position."
SpaceX Released ONBOARD Booster 12 View Show How Exactly Mechazilla CATCH Starship...
However, what really caught my attention was that one side of the booster-specifically near the Ship QD (Quick Disconnect) area-seemed to burn more intensely. From other angles, we can also observe that, while the fire wasn't large, it burned quite fiercely. Comparing the live stream with post-flight images, the chine on the Ship QD side appears slightly damaged, likely from the fire during landing. Fortunately, the damage is minimal and can be easily repaired.
In the onboard footage, we also get a clear, slow-motion view of the moment when Super Heavy connects with the chopsticks, allowing us to closely observe this incredible feat.
It's a perfect combination, timed down to the second. The way the chopsticks close is highly proactive, and after closing, the lifting point touches the landing rail, then lowers the booster. This step raised a lot of concerns before the flight, but after seeing how smoothly it worked, I have great confidence in the success of future missions. Elon Musk even affirmed, "Good chance that Starship achieves full stack reusability in 2025, which is the critical breakthrough needed to make life multi-planetary."

It will of course be used to study and find places that need improvement for the next versions . The only real way to see what changes work is to build it and test it then refine the design and do it all over again. With Booster 12 potentially becoming a museum piece, SpaceX should capitalize on its groundbreaking achievements and inevitable future "firsts" by establishing a dedicated museum. This SpaceX Museum would showcase both triumphs and setbacks, offering a comprehensive look at the company's journey to revolutionize space technology. Imagine a SpaceX technology and science center where visitors can witness firsthand the evolution of SpaceX's rockets, spacecraft, and other innovations. It would be a remarkable tourist destination, inspiring future generations of scientists, engineers, and explorers from around the world. Small yet important details are often lost over time if not recorded. Imagine a SpaceX Museum exhibit where visitors encounter a captivating lineup of artifacts - remnants of rockets that have braved the perils of spaceflight. Each artifact is paired with a video chronicling its unique story: Launch Objectives: A clear explanation of the mission's goals, whether it was deploying satellites, testing new technology, or pushing the boundaries of space exploration. Successes and Failures: A gripping account of the launch, highlighting key moments, unexpected challenges, and triumphant achievements. Failures would be analyzed, revealing the cause of any mishaps and the lessons learned. Key Personnel: A spotlight on the brilliant minds behind each mission - the engineers, scientists, and technicians who played crucial roles in designing, building, and launching these incredible machines. This immersive experience would provide a profound understanding of SpaceX's relentless pursuit of innovation, showcasing its triumphs and acknowledging its setbacks as stepping stones to progress. It would be a testament to the dedication and ingenuity that drive humanity's exploration of the cosmos.

Landing on those pins is a big change in the stress along the structure. Since take-off, the stress is compressive, with the bottom sustaining all the weight above. After landing, there is a stretch stress, with those pins at the top holding the weight below.

Even if they couldn't reuse a booster immediately, without a few days of minor repairs, it would still work out fine to have a couple of "ready to go" boosters on reserve (After all, the factory is near by) and use one of them for the next launch, and take the previous one in for inspection and repairs, for a day or so, before putting it BACK in the reserve line a couple launches later. Using three or four boosters in rotation, while NOT quite as convenient as using the same one immediately over and over again, should pose no major problems, so long as usual "inspection and reconditioning" times are short enough to keep up with the launch schedule.
