Take your personal data back with Incogni! Use code FELIX at the link below and get 60% off an annual plan: incogni.com/felix What do you think? Will SpaceX actually attempt to catch the Booster this year, or is this another example of Elon's famously optimistic timelines?

It will be this year, and possibly next launch, assuming that this booster can soft land in the ocean.

@MrAlbertaSurfer
@MrAlbertaSurfer 11 дней назад
@@YAFASHRIKI A "blanket" cover doesn't work for a heat shield. You have to consider the massive temperature change and expansion. Tiles work because they expand to close the gaps between them and their current shape has short seams to not give the hot plasma places to accelerate and get hotter. A single piece heat shield would expand so much it would shatter. Starship has the benefit of being made from stainless steel and not carbon fiber and aluminum like Shuttle was. Shuttle had to keep the aluminum surfaces above like 600*C, where Starship can get to over 1400*C. The heat shield is of vital importance, but less so that it was on Shuttle.

Catching the booster with a pair of chopsticks from mid air may just go down as one of the craziest feats of engineering ever attempted by human beings right up there with the Wright brothers first flight and landing on the moon. I also don't think most people realize how significant the Polaris Dawn missions are. It's regular humans, not professional astronauts learning to live and work in space. 6:41 "It's important to remember Starship's design priorities are functionality... not aesthetics." This is simply not true at all. Look at Elon's entire history. He has commented many many times on the importance of aesthetics. Electric cars had to look cool, be sexy, not dorky golf carts. He wanted Dragon to look awesome and futuristic. He wanted the SpaceX spacesuits to look sleek, not merely "functional". He has commented multiple times about how cool it is that finally "the future looks like the future". He even lamented that he may have made the Starship nosecone a bit too pointy - but that he insisted on that geometry because he likes the AESTHETICS. Aesthetics are ALWAYS part of the calculation for Elon - just look at ANY of his companies or projects.
@arthemis1039
@arthemis1039 11 дней назад
Saying that the priority is functionality does not mean they don't care for aesthetic. SpaceX communication success also depends on iconic designs, but design will not get in the way of engineers at the end of the day.
@i-love-space390
@i-love-space390 11 дней назад
I agree. It is all part of his ability to get many rich people to invest in his projects and get all the fanboys to believe his stuff is "more advanced" than the functional products made by others. Since SpaceX likes to always design everything in house from a clean sheet, they will inevitably make mistakes others have already made and learned from. I do not deny he has browbeat his engineers to do things others would be afraid to pursue, but he also makes bone-headed moves like trying to get by without a flame diverter for the most powerful booster in history. Those kind of things discredit him in the eyes of outsiders who aren't "fanboys".

The SpaceX EVA suit looks a lot like Ed White's Gemini suit (not in appearance, but in agility features). Unless Jared tries to perform actual repair work tests, his space walk will be about as valuable as Alexi Leonov and Ed White's short stunt space walks. Later Gemini missions showed how difficult working in space was. It was not until Gemini 12 that NASA showed proficiency in working outside the capsule. It wasn't until the Space Shuttle program, with the massive orbiter (for stability) and the Robotic Arm for easy mobility and astronaut restraints, that NASA actually showed MASTERY of EVA operations. Let us hope interplanetary Starship will be equipped with an airlock and a robotic arm for repairs that might be required.

I insist: the payload door is wrongly oriented, it should be vertical. A vertical slot is much more convenient for four main reasons: 1) much reduced aperture across the main sources of compressive presure (engine thrust and opposing aerodynamic pressure), 2) Stiffer alignment of door hinges, which provides a better single rotation axis under hull deformation, 3) Stiffer door, its curvature spanning just its width instead of its length, and 3) Stress alignment on vertically-placed payload frames instead of across them.

@i-love-space390
@i-love-space390 11 дней назад
SpaceX has a history of ignoring what other experts learned in favor of an "invented here" plan. I have a feeling that these "advanced" suits will prove to be about on par with the Gemini suits of 1966. And my understanding is that all the crew will have to wear the suits when Jared goes outside, because the Dragon capsule does not have an airlock, so the entire crew cabin will have to be depressurized like the Gemini capsule of 1965.
@jonp8015

@@i-love-space390 Yeah, you understand exactly what they said they would be doing. The entire crew will be wearing EVA suits the whole time, and they'll depressurize the whole capsule before doing the space walk. I wouldn't call it "ignoring experts" as you say, there was a time when this kind of EVA was standard. They're not trying to reinvent here, but instead taking a step back to a simpler procedure and improving on it. If the new suits are enough of an improvement, then there's nothing wrong with this becoming a standard procedure again.

Imo they will try a booster catch by next year. Risking Mechazilla or Stage Zero before 2nd Tower isn't really a good idea.

I would think that the first booster catch will take place once a few fully controlled, soft water landings have been completed. There is currently no launch tower backup in BC.

The rust you see in image 4:25 can easily be avoided by coating with phosphoric acid, before painting in a marine environment .

Great Video ! Another option for doing a spacewalk is from the Blue Origin Blue Moon HLS ! The Blue Moon HLS with a 6.1 km/sec delta-V (per Robert Zubrin) should have an Air-Lock/dust-lock (Mike Griffin-NASA Headquarters) to do spacewalks in LEO, GEO and on the moon ! The Blue Moon HLS can then do missions to the Hubble Space Telescope to boost the orbit and/or repair the space telescope ! The Tech developed to return to the moon to stay, can take US and the world to Mars and beyond ! tjl

I didn't realize humidity in a spacesuit would be a problem but that is truly terrifying, a wool patch with a vaccum pump would wick and capture water making such suits much safer and comfortable.

Every time I see the existing tank farm I can't help wondering whether, if SpaceX had planned from the start to have all horizontal tanks so had more time to plan/order ahead when it did decide to switch everything to horizontal tanks, whether all of the tanks might have been like the 2 big ribbed tanks closest to the vertical tanks in order to maximise the storage volume in a given footprint rather than the mix of different sized tanks that we see now. I'll be very interested to see whether the second tank farm for the new launch tower does look a bit more uniform in terms of the tank sizes compared to what we see in the existing tank farm where I get the impression that has kind of grown organically based on whatever deals they could get on additional tanks at fairly short notice.

Be interesting to see commentary from this channel about feedback from some engineers that starship is actually wholly impractical for getting to the moon because of the poor range. Let alone mars.

The opening/vent next to the payload bay could be a way to depressurise the loading bay. If I'm not mistaken the air rushing out of the opening petz dispenser did damage the fragile payload door. With this vent they could depressurise the whole thing before opening the bay doors.(Just speculation)

Why don't they put the dragon scales (heat tiles) on the OLM? they wouldn't have to paint it and they could glue/attach them very tightly.

just another thought, amateur thought that since the auto destruct happens when the friction builds up in the plasma cloud disconnects the navigation telemetry from the satellites, could they not put about a 3 m antenna that would extend from the bottom of the craft and get telemetry from the Earth and then inject the antenna once they’re cleared to the upper atmosphere just a question from an amateur

17:09 I think you meant to say the joints firm up REDUCING mobility when outside the spacecraft, because that's how things like gloves behave when internal pressure is greater than external pressure. The suit becomes a balloon, its never going to be easier to deform the balloon under pressure.

If they know how far the chopsticks need to close to catch the returning rocket, why don't they build pivoting padded ends on the chopstick arms that would stop the arms where they need to close to and thereby not damage the returning rocket. These can pivot so that they are clear at launch and can swing back in place for receiving the rocket? These ends do not catch the rocket but stop the bouncing of the arms.

I doubt they will try to land/catch a returning booster until they have a second launch tower ready to go. They just can't afford to lose their only launch facility.
