Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised to hear this, but many of us may have caught a glimpse of the interior design of Starship HLS. It made its debut during Starship's major event this month, Flight 4. However, our focus during that time was likely on the flight itself, so not many people may recall seeing it.
So, today's episode is here to dive into this intriguing topic and answer the question: What does the space that astronauts will live in on the way to the Moon look like?

It's been quite intriguing since the proposal of Starship HLS to ponder over its exterior design. But have you ever wondered what's inside the vast space measuring 9 meters wide and about 18 meters high that's meant for the crew?
During the live coverage of Flight 4, glimpses of the interior were somewhat revealed. So, let's rewind a bit to appreciate it.

Here's a captivating view of a corner inside Starship HLS. From this design, it seems to be the airlock deck-a crucial intermediate area for astronauts to transition between the spacecraft's interior and the vastness of space. I've scrutinized this image multiple times, and I find it hard to believe it's the interior of a spacecraft; rather, it resembles the layout of a villa. If this design holds true, it would completely revolutionize our traditional concepts of spacecraft interiors.

Excuse me if someone has already pointed this out, but I don't think it's correct to say the Axiom EMUs are "less advanced" than the SpaceX EVA suits planned for the Polaris Dawn mission. The requirements of lunar EVA are very different from those of orbital EVA. According to what I've read, the SpaceX suits are supplied through umbilicals while the Axiom suits are self-contained. The AxEMU also has to cope with abrasive lunar dust as well as mobility issues related to operating in 1/6 gravity and not microgravity. Each suit has its merits, but you can't really compare the two. Oh, and the "pumpkin suits" (ACES) worn by space shuttle crews are launch-entry suits, not intended for EVA. In this they're more like the current SpaceX and Boeing launch-entry suits. Thanks for putting up with my pedantry.

It would be one of the first vessels to have enough space for any aesthetic interior. Just look at the inside of the ISS. Having gravity, actual living space, the ISS astronauts will be envious.

There is barely any mention of the elephant in the room, which is NASA's outdated and outrragiously expensive booster rocket, which reminds me of Boeing's fumblings. SpaceX's HLS, like Dream Chaser, is fine, but they need to have a practical, dependable rocket available to get everything into space in the first place. I think they should give the whole project over to SpaceX.

I think there's going to have to be a separate quarters for the putting on and taking off their spacesuits so they don't get the lunar Regulith dust In the rest of the spacecraft.. ❤❤

I'm thinking SpaceX forgot about the huge amount of moon dust that will be coming through that airlock. Very abrasive. Most of that airlock would probably be taken up by a large vacuum system that would be need to get rid of the dust off the suits.

I think the lift will be a good opportunity to get as much moon dust off as possible. Anti-static charge, and it will all fall off back toward the ground

Hopefully we get a flight crew's outside and inside view of Starship from space. Falcon 9-Dragon taxis a flight crew to LEO and docks with an already in-orbit Starship. The crew spends a week in LEO checking out Starship's systems in 0 g, noting any crew related issues. After a week-long mission, the flight crew returns to Dragon for its Earth reentry. This could be done way before Starship is manned launch/reentry certified. It would really shock NASA, especially if they televised it.

I wondered where they were collectively with the technology to get to and sustain the astronauts on the moon missions. Thanks for the update! My mind went racing, thinking about the new suits, and I am still amazed that the systems are not more integrated after all the decades of research. Okay, yes, not an engineer; just a well read geek. So please oblige me until you think I am a nutter. The Russians had an excellent idea with their suits that are just open the door and crawl in design. Easy peasy. So with the next generation, would it not make sense to encorporate as much 3D printing for cooling and heating systems to lighten things as well as maintaining tolerances never dreamed of before? I am thinking of the helmet, gloves, cod pieces, back hatch. As well, the hatch itself could have the ability to dock with add on packs, for various outdoor missions. I understand about Material Science, etc. so not totally backside talk. It just strikes me that if they are at the point of printing out old rocket engine designs, to the point of eliminating so many welds that it only needed two from 56, are we not at the level where any bulky systems that were separate from the suit itself, be finally incorporated properly and function as well or superior to the original designs?✌️🤘🇨🇦

I believe the Axiom suits are designed to be crawled into. One of the bigger rover designs I saw had the back of the suits docked to the back of the rover, with no other doors or hatches. That's kinda where I assumed that they were made to be crawled in and out of. It'll be interesting to see as they get closer to making these missions a reality!

@@kalkovonschpritzendorf1914 sure can’t see them in the drawings. If they just move straight down from the main body there’s not enough stability considering how tall it is. Look at the original Lunar Lander from the 60’s. Yea,it’s comparatively tiny but at least it wouldn’t tip over if the landing wasn’t perfect or the terrain wasn’t flat and firm. Musks obsession with light weight puts the astronauts at risk. Getting all the way there only to have the lander tip over and loose the crew would stop the whole mission to the moon. The public doesn’t like loosing their hero’s like we did with Challenger.

Most designs now show landing legs. They won't overlook that. There are too many people involved to overlook something used so many times before in the company.

@@fw1421 trust me, Musk doesn't like losing Starships either. Don't forget the gravity on moon is much lower so it's easier to keep something stable. The legs, as shown in the video, are expanding from the bottom of the craft - there are like 8 of them. You are right that it looks unstable... but you forget that the ship is 9m wide - these legs are much wider than the Apollo lander. I am curious to how they want to balance it though. I do think there will be some system to balance the legs in case of uneven terrain - if they can auto adjust each leg automatically, they should be safe.

Do Spacex plan to generate artificial gravity for the moon mission, or will that be postponed until Mars? I have read that it's an absolute requirement for the latter because of the length of the voyage. (Exercising won't be a solution because it's to do with the functions of the liver and kidneys, not muscle and bone loss.) When they _do_ generate artificial gravity, the layout of the HLS Ship (which might not be the same, but then again it might) suggests that tumbling end over end will be the method and not spinning about the longitudinal axis. Is there info from Spacex about this please?

We don't know how much gravity is essential to human health. It could be that 1/6 g plus plenty of exercise may be sufficient. Only one way to find out.

@@1701echopapa Hi, thanks for writing. You raise a very interesting and important question: what would be the impact of the c. 0.38 _g_ gravity of Mars itself upon human health? AFAICT we have no conclusive answers yet due to insufficient scientific investigation, so I would want to ask Musk what research, if any, Spacex is conducting to find out; but I'm now quite concerned about this. My thinking proceeds from a premise that Nature never provides a single iota of anything more than is required for survival. Given that our entire evolution--not just the c.2.5m years of hominids and _Homo sapiens_ but including also everything which went before that--has been under a gravity of 1 _g,_ I suspect we will discover that 1 _g_ is an absolute requirement for our long term health. For putative Martian colonists, therefore, I can't see this as anything other than a complete showstopper. :-( If my thinking is correct--and as you say, there's only one way to find out--then it implies that while humans might well live indefinitely on other planets with 1 _g_ gravity or in space habitats rotating to provide it, we can't live for long anywhere else but Earth. Lastly, returning to the question of travel via Starship to Mars, clearly Musk will want each Ship to arrive with 100 colonists who are fit and healthy, not hospital cases requiring lifelong dialysis (including the doctors and nurses forming part of the Ship's complement). If a full 1 _g_ turns out to be essential, then there is of course another--and in my humble but outspoken opinion ('IMHBOO'?)--far better solution than tumbling, which is to use a different propulsion system that can provide that constant 1 _g_ acceleration for half of the journey followed by a single half-tumble and 1 _g_ deceleration for the other half. Granted that probably rockets would be desirable for imparting a suitably high initial impulse to the Ship but following that, the most likely candidate drive seems to be Hall Effect thrusters. I notice that Spacex already develops and uses those for its Starlinks, albeit not as powerful as Starship would need. As well as providing a steady 1 _g_ for the entire voyage, my calculations say that this method would also yield another highly desirable thing: a reduction in journey time from about 9 months to about 90 hours, or around four days. Such a thing would not only virtually guarantee a healthy Ship's complement on arrival, but would also mean that Earth - Mars interplanetary _trade_ would become entirely feasible, which is an idea I like very much. :-D Of course, this is all just so much speculation atm; and my sums may be wrong. Hopefully others will think about this, critique my ideas and methods and check my arithmetic. Anyone? :-))

I think this is just a garage kept in vacuum at all times on the moon. An airlock would be round for strenght, and the volume is way too large for an airlock that need to pumped down and repressurised every time it is used.

Call me old if you wish, but I remember when I was in the 7th grade in 1966 when the weekly reader was a thing. Every so often they had stories about how spaceflight was going to be in the future. This was a few years before we actually sent men to the moon. We were supposed to have a space station like the one in the movie 2001 a space odyssey and spaceships looking like the one in the movie. Point is, nothing ever turns out to be like what is dreamed to be. Don't fall for all the hype that they are putting out about these concepts. It will probably never look like these futuristic concepts and I don't believe we'll ever have a functional moon base. You can keep your dreams but just remember that reality and dreams are two different things. And forget about colonies on Mars. Think rationally about the logistics and materials that it would require to accomplish such a fantastic project. There aren't any construction crews and heavy equipment waiting there much less the materials required for such a project. Let's make our earthly home a better place where we can all live and get along peacefully with each other.

Lets math A launch estimated 8 million per depot generously?≈ 4 mil fuel 4 mil transfer to depot launch x 10 80 mil per 100ton or 5 semi trucks worth of stuff that costs 150 million dollars of equipment so were in 230 million The SLS cost 18.3 billion divided by 230mil is 79 mars landers for the cost of one launch. This probably what spacex does not to mention the billions of other equipment that utilizes the railroad to the frontier so to say. 2-4 launch sites in a 26 month window. With adequate boil off depots to last 24 months with a 3 day cadence just like falcon9 that's 1040 launches /13 per mars lander gets 80 landers 400 semi trucks worth of material A supper Walmart does 700-1100 semi's per year. So we need at least 10 walmarts on mars this could easily sustain the million people musk wants

as 10 super Walmarts serve 5.2 million people terrestrially. S o let's just say 100,000 people. 10 super Walmarts times 900 semitrucks divided by 5 semi's per starship looks like 180*10*13= 23,400 launches. So 23,400/(26mo*30launches per month) makes 30 daily launch sites operating 24/7 per year. 23,400* 8mil =187.2 billion dollars. Plus launch facilities costs 30*3 billion makes 90 just say 100billion on launch facilities stage 0 Total 287.2 or 300billion dollars. 1million per lander minimum. Makes 187.5 billion then add the private contributions ? 18 billion? Do you have 300 billion, of courses this would never happen. Give it to poor little earthlings instead Right? Saying the AX suit is not as advanced as the SpaceX suit is a VERY BOLD statement… They are entirely different types of suits. Apples & Oranges! The X suit is not intended on being used on the moon’s surface where the suit would be most likely shredded from regolith. The AX suit is meant to be left outside and attached to the rover. To prevent regolith getting in living areas. AX is also is meant to be self contained. The X suit has a more simple design because it has an umbilical cord, air, cooling etc are transferred to the suit from the attached craft, it doesn’t have to be provided from the suit. =smaller. A bit more difficult to walk around and explore the moon and work dragging a cord around… Then bring all the toxic dirt back into the spacecraft… For floating around on the exterior of a spacecraft you don’t need those things. I use to love your channel but noticed the quality of your channel going downhill with clickbait headlines and untrue statements like this. Please stay true to yourself and promote quality space news. You could make a whole new episode just comparing the suits and I’m sure you’ll get a ton of views. 🤔👍

SpaceX's suits don't have fully integrated life support, which limits usefulness on moon walks. Also - I'm okay with giving other people a chance at making space suits; not everything needs to be SpaceX.

Who said Starship would have a crew from Earth's orbit to the moon? Where is this information? From what I understand, it's just a cargo ship and elevator from the Gateway station to the surface and back to the Gateway station. Then, it's space trash.

Ummm. The short view of a space vehicle crossing the cratered surface of what should represent the moon will not have any spacecraft surface heating caused by atmospheric particles because the moon has no atmosphere to cause such heating. Thanks for playing kiddies. Face Palm

I doubt they'd send rovers using Starship, anyways. Well, at least not with the HLS. That'd be a pretty big waste of cargo space and weight. I'd expect them to use Falcon Heavy to deploy a dedicated rover lander developed by whoever makes the rover.

@@coolHawk_ With an operating Starship there won't be a falcon heavy anymore. Without HLS landing legs and thrusters there won't be a Starship doing it either. Would have been better to make HLS capable of anything that will likely be needed in future and just use it for less taxing early missions. No need to put a rover in if you have other cargo. Will a 160-foot-tall cylinder be stable enough to land on the soft surface of the moon? Should this thing land on a soft pocket of lunar soil and one of the legs happen to sink, would it dangerously lean to one side? Where is the center of gravity? As I look at this thing, I think about all the other failed Starship ideas. That vertical tank farm at Starbase for one. And finally, astronauts descending 100 feet down the side of the spacecraft in a basket? Really?
