Elon Musk’s Starship rocket has blasted off on its third test flight, successfully launching the super-heavy rocket into space.
The world’s most powerful rocket launched from Boca Chica in Texas at 8.25am local time.
Cheers erupted among the ground staff at the successful blast-off, with the rocket reaching speeds of more than 25,000 kilometers per hour.
Starship is the heaviest rocket ever built and the biggest man-made object to fly through space.
The rocket has already passed a key hurdle, with the Super Heavy booster separating and falling back to Earth, a stage the first test flight failed.
However, after completing a series of tests in orbit, Starship engineers now believe the rocket has been lost after its signals blacked out in its final approach towards a splash landing in the Indian Ocean.
Regardless, the mission has fulfilled a number of key objectives for SpaceX, successfully reaching space and flying through space to its re-entry phase.
Ultimately, it is hoped both the Super Heavy booster and Starship will one day be able to return to earth - where they can be reused.
SpaceX’s rocket is intended to take astronauts back to the Moon for NASA by 2026 - and ultimately onwards to Mars.
Confirmed: Starship lost on re-entry.
While Starship did successfully reach space, the rocket was lost in the final stages of its mission. Still, the company’s engineers seemed pleased with the results, celebrating the company’s 22nd birthday with a celebratory “Pie”.
