AU PAIR VISA FOR SPAIN -- American citizens/residents //
Hey guys!! Thanks so much for watching my video about the process to get the au pair visa for Spain. As I mention in the video, the majority of the content in this video pertains to AMERICAN CITIZENS/GREEN CARD HOLDERS. There definitely are some nuggets in there for non-Americans though. I live in Georgia, USA, so I had to apply at the Consulate of Spain in Miami.

I must say, as horrible as the visa is, it's WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT! My experience here has been absolutely phenomenal, and although the visa is really tough, you'll get through it! Best of luck! ❤

Hi Graham! First of all, your videos are literally SO HELPFUL and I have been binge watching all of them :) Second off, what agency did you use to get your background check apostilled? I am leaving for Spain in (hopefully) 3 months and just received my background check from the FBI, but saw that the processing time for apostilles on the Department of State’s website is anywhere up to 3 months so I am sorta panicking. I was hoping you could point me in the right direction? Thanks so much!!

Hi Chloe! Thanks so much for watching!! I went through a private apostille agency in Atlanta. It took about a week. Just Google “apostille near me”. Sometimes you might have to ship it off.

did you have to prove accommodation? Would the host family write a letter of some type to send with the visa application?

For me, they took my au pair contract as proof of accomodation.

Hi Graham! Great video. :) Is the school you're attending a year-round school? If not, did you inform them of the time that you would be staying in Spain as an Au Pair and that you would need to be in the course for that period of time?

Hi Antoine! Thanks for the compliment! I'm not 100% sure if the school does classes during the summer, but I don't think so. I did have to tell them what duration I would be in Spain. Most, students coming to Spain from the USA have to take 20 hours per week of language classes. The Miami Consulate, which covers my state (Georgia) as well only requires that you be a full-time student and they gave me my visa with 10.5 hours/week of classes. I think they're the ONLY consulate that does not require 20 hours. I have learned that no one really cares whether you show up to class or not, and the government has NO way of knowing whether you're actually attending class, so I think it's a bit of a rule that's just for show.

@@antoinecunningham3730 I don't plan to. I don't think you have to attend classes in the summer, but my contract expires in June, so I expect likely go home for the summer, or au pair in a German-speaking country!

Hey Graham! How did you go about health insurance? Did you purchase a new one or were you already covered for international travel and you just showed that in a letter to the Consulate?

Hi! My host family and I use Sanitas. It's a private insurance company here in Spain. I've heard of some people using their existing USA insurance company, then paying something extra for Europe. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure as to how it works being that my host family pays for it and they picked it out. If you're at all unsure, I'd email the Consulate and ask about recommended companies.

Hey graham, I am fluent in Spanish. Would I need to take a language class while I am in au pair like is it absolutely necessary??

Hi! You DO NOT want the people at the consulate to know that you are fluent (if you speak Spanish at home) because the au pair program is made in order to learn Spanish. Even if you are fluent, you will still have to take language courses in order to apply for the visa. I’m my experience, I didn’t have to take them longer than 3 months and didn’t have to show proof of language classes to get my residency once in Spain. I made a video about that which you can see in my channel!

Hello, what did you submit for the insurance proof of payment, and did you have to pay in advance to for your insurance, this is the biggest thing I am running into.

Hi Ashley!! This is a really great question. To be entirely honest, I'm not entirely sure. My host family managed the insurance for me, so I don't really know how that works. I believed they arranged it a couple of months before I came to live with them, but it didn't start until I came to Spain. I hope that helps and that you subscribe!! Xoxo

Hi Maya, thanks for commenting! Honestly, I'm not sure right now. I assume yes, but the only way to know is to send an email to the closest consulate and find out. You can find which consulate your state corresponds to on aupairworld.com under the "Spain" host country tab.
