The reason why the whole "expat vs immigrant" debate ruffles so many feathers is because it immediately triggers a social class debate. Expats are usually associated with already wealthy people who don't necessarily need to move to another country while immigrants are usually associated with people living in poor conditions trying to upgrade their lives to wealthier conditions. Also, expats don't tend to stay permanently in the countries they're moving to while immigrants often do, exactly because of the wealth disparity between their home country and their new country. In the end it's semantics but I've had some discussions with expats who refused to see themselves as immigrants, even though their move to their new country was clearly an upgrade from their home country and they've been around for 15 years. The word "immigrant" is still considered a "lower class" word to some.
@JuanAmeritano-yj5xt
@JuanAmeritano-yj5xt 8 дней назад
Great comment! I would add that expats often tend to recreate many aspects of the country they left and live in neighborhoods taken over by expats. There they can live their lives without really assimilating into the culture of the new country where they live. The same idea can be applied to the idea of tourist and traveler. I avoid expat communities because I come to experience the Spanish culture and to explore its wonderful, unexpected rincones.

I understood expat = Brit abroad. First time I read and heard "expat" was here. I have nothing to say about what an English word should be. Expatriado in Spanish, but no one says that. It sounds to exiled from the Spanish understanding of that common latin word.

My friend from Gib who is sort of Spanish speaks to her mother every day, often more than once and gets several phone calls a day (sometimes “pocket calls”) 😂. I think the pueblo life where the generations live close to each other is something we miss. All my five grandchildren live at various distances from me which is sad

Hi Stu. After living in Spain (Burgos), for ten years, I can understand why people don't want to talk about politics, but I've also come to the conclusion that this also means if you ignore something and take no notice, this also encourages certain politicians to get away with far more? It would be interesting to know what others think about this... (if they can talk about it!).

UK Law on working hrs... Overview You cannot work more than 48 hours a week on average - normally averaged over 17 weeks. This law is sometimes called the ‘working time directive’ or ‘working time regulations’. You can choose to work more by opting out of the 48-hour week. If you’re under 18, you cannot work more than 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week. Exceptions You may have to work more than 48 hours a week on average if you work in a job: where 24-hour staffing is required in the armed forces, emergency services or police in security and surveillance as a domestic servant in a private household as a seafarer, sea-fisherman or worker on vessels on inland waterways where working time is not measured and you’re in control, for example you’re a managing executive with control over your decisions..... Spain is mandated by its membership of NATO to spend X% of its GDP on defence. For most European NATO Members, this varies between 1.0 and 2.0%. Trump always bangs on about Europe not paying its share....I think the UK is the only Country that pays over 2%.

The comment "who wants to invade Spain?" could be construed as slightly narrow-minded, as Nato defense spending is aimed at a large collective of countries and its over-all security. However, on the other hand, why are there still wars, and why do many civilized countries participate in the highly lucrative Global Arms Trade (international Murder, Mayhem and Mutilation) the result of which are large profits and general misery for those involved in war-zones, is something that should be seriously questioned. I wish indeed that it was as simple as Who wants to invade Spain.

I’m going to give my opinion on a political subject, remember that it’s just my opinion.😉. No developed country needs immigration to keep its economy running. There are no jobs a trained local cannot or will not do if paid appropriately. Governance is the art of planning for the future, and that’s what’s gone wrong in many cases. Mass-immigration can easily be stopped, as it always has been until recently. It’s only ban governance and corporate greed that keeps it going. Your opinion may differ.🤣

"Expat" stinks of white colonialism Stuart, primarily by the British. In Spain, Brits use the word to place them on a social pedestal above other foreigners/immigrants. Quite amusingly, now that they are third country nationals they are below EU citizens in social ranking. One final point, you wouldn't find a Polish plumber in Reading, UK calling himself an expat! He would refer to himself primarily as Polish and then perhaps foreigner.

Increased education of women is linked to lower fertility rates, contributing to slower population growth and potential population decline in the future.
@SimonTmte
@SimonTmte 8 дней назад
Been sub replacement rate births since 1972-3, a population decline or not has been a matter of immigration, women's education is only a correlation which doesn't really say anything, they used to say once countries get rich the fertility falls, but then poor countries started having very low fertility rates so that'd negate the whole argument, fact is they're clueless about what matters to which degree in regards of the birth rates, you'd have like 200 different reasons everything from falling sperm counts to housing,..
@JuanAmeritano-yj5xt
@JuanAmeritano-yj5xt 8 дней назад
The relationship between women's education and lower birth rates is particularly pronounced in developing countries (also known as "third world countries"). In these regions, where access to education for girls and women has historically been limited, increasing educational opportunities can have a dramatic impact on fertility rates. This effect stems from several factors: * Delayed marriage: Educated women often delay marriage, focusing on their studies and career aspirations. This directly reduces their reproductive lifespan. * Family planning: Education equips women with knowledge about contraception and reproductive health, empowering them to make informed choices about family size. * Economic empowerment: Educated women are more likely to participate in the workforce, gain financial independence, and prioritize career development. This can lead to a preference for smaller families. * Child health and survival: Educated mothers tend to have healthier children, as they are more likely to seek prenatal care, vaccinations, and proper nutrition. Lower infant mortality rates contribute to a desire for fewer children. * Social norms: As more women become educated, societal attitudes towards large families may shift, further encouraging smaller family sizes. Overall, investing in girls' and women's education in developing countries can have a transformative effect on population growth, leading to healthier families, stronger economies, and more sustainable development.

@@SimonTmte * Declining fertility rates: The global fertility rate has been falling for decades due to various factors such as increased access to education and contraception, changing social norms, and economic development. * Aging populations: As life expectancy increases and fertility rates decrease, many countries are experiencing a growing proportion of elderly individuals. This puts a strain on healthcare systems and reduces the size of the workforce. * Economic factors: Economic downturns, high unemployment, and rising costs of living can discourage people from having children. * Education and women's empowerment: As women gain access to education and economic opportunities, they tend to have fewer children and delay childbearing. * Urbanization: People living in urban areas tend to have smaller families due to higher living costs and different lifestyles. * Access to family planning: Increased access to contraception and family planning services allows couples to control their family size. * Government policies: Some governments implement policies to encourage smaller families, such as the one-child policy in China. * Environmental concerns: Concerns about overpopulation and its impact on the environment may lead individuals to choose smaller families. * Changing cultural norms: In some cultures, the traditional preference for large families is shifting towards smaller families. * Delayed marriage: The average age of marriage is increasing in many countries, which can lead to fewer children being born. * Childcare costs: The high cost of childcare can be a deterrent to having children. * Infertility: Infertility rates are increasing in some populations, which can contribute to lower birth rates. * Health concerns: Health problems, such as chronic diseases, can affect fertility and reduce the desire to have children. * Migration: Migration from countries with low fertility rates to those with higher rates can offset declining birth rates in the latter. * Natural disasters: Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and droughts, can lead to loss of life and displacement, affecting population growth. * Wars and conflicts: Wars and conflicts can cause significant population declines through casualties, displacement, and disruption of social structures. * Disease outbreaks: Infectious diseases, such as pandemics, can cause significant mortality and affect population growth. * Famine: Famine can lead to widespread malnutrition, disease, and death, reducing population size. * Economic inequality: High levels of economic inequality can lead to social unrest, conflict, and ultimately, population decline. * Political instability: Political instability can lead to violence, displacement, and economic decline, which can negatively impact population growth. * Climate change: Climate change can lead to extreme weather events, food shortages, and displacement, affecting population growth. * Resource scarcity: Scarcity of resources, such as water and food, can lead to conflict, migration, and population decline. * Pollution: Environmental pollution can have negative health effects, leading to reduced fertility and increased mortality. * Technological advancements: Advancements in robotics and automation may reduce the need for human labor, potentially leading to lower birth rates. * Social isolation: Social isolation and loneliness can lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems, which can affect fertility and mortality.
