On Wednesday, August 14, popular holiday destinations in Spain were severely impacted by an intense weather phenomenon, as a previously oppressive heatwave gave way to violent storms. The Balearic Islands, renowned for their serene beaches and vibrant tourism, were hit particularly hard. Ibiza and Formentera were the first islands to bear the brunt of the storm, before it advanced towards the other major islands in the region, Majorca and Menorca.
The channel lists such natural disasters as:
1) Geological emergencies: Earthquake, Volcanic eruption, Mud, Landslide, Avalanche;
2) Hydrological emergencies: Flood, Tsunami, Limnological disaster,
3) Fires: Forest fire, Peat fire;
4) Meteorological emergencies: Tornado, Cyclone, Blizzard, Hail, Drought, Tornado, Hail, Hurricane, Tsunami, Storm, Thunderstorm, Tempest.

I have sailed all over the world, including the southern ocean, and can easily say that the worst weather I have ever sailed in, was in this exact area, we actually thought we were done for. What baffles me is hardly anyone shown on this video, had put on a life jacket.. Yacht owners need to do better with their emergency drills. Sad to see a Wally wrecked, but good to see the crew abandoned ship with life jackets and life raft.

apparently it wasn't badly wrecked; the next or over-next day, it was towed and floating (images on Facebook); it was probably just lying on sand (Formentera is known for its sand bottom) (if done on purpose a brilliant idea), and hence no rocks made any extreme irreversible damage.

Agree completely. The worst storm I have ever been in was traveling between Palma, Mallorca and Porto Cervo, Sardinia in 1987. They closed the Strait of Bonifacio for over 24hrs. We took refuge in the bay behind Capo Caccia. A Mistral is nothing to take lightly.

When I started sailing in the Med 35 years ago, (I don't know enough to be a skipper), I learned a few important things about anchorage and bad weather. First never take anchor in such a way as the wind might push you to the shore, always the opposite because it is safer; second, flee bad weather, and third, if not possible, you might be better off out at see than near any land... as long as the boat is closed and doesn't hit rock, it floats and you can keep the crew and passengers safe. The guys I sailed with had started in their teens, and as soon as the anchor would start dragging, they would sense it and all would immediately come on deck start the engine and react. I sailed recently with RYA skipper, but was not impressed by his anchoring skills, way to ,confident on his super expensive anchor... and lacking experience and ability to sense the dragging.

@@DiscipleofHim Well, for me, I knew who the op was talking about (woman having a drink on the sea front @ 3:00 ) because I also spotted her smoking (I fail to see her lighting the cigarette but it doesn't matter). If searching the video for a tourist, in a place full of tourists to spot someone (who is probably a tourist but can also be a local, by the way) is practical for you, good. I might have stuck a bit on the "female" word because I'm a French speaker and we usually use male / female for animals or something medical / scientific. I might be wrong but I had the feeling that the op was implying that even (those clumsy) women / tourists could light a cigarette, which is silly.

@@DiscipleofHim ... and with all of that I forgot the most important point : derogatory or not the original comment is pointless as the woman is not lighting a cig in said storm, sitting under a big umbrella thing.

In hurricane island boats moor put with chaibes, anchors as many as possible. The storm changed wind direction suddenly for that reason skippers as wally were pushed to rocks on a, flat island. The islands, have always, had these, storms. The Mediterranean sudden storms are more intense than Atlantic storms. In Gibraltar straight very commem decades of storms affecting even maritime freighter seeking ports. Look how boats, prepare at carribean islands. They either take them out to land in warehouses , take thrm to other side of island, going out to sea not a chance with hurricane 4 winds. I've been through Mediterranean storms and it's, been like this. since 70s. Why do you think the tress are bushes, on the island it's due to high winds. Jajaja, extreme wheather? Every August/ September we have almost one or two DANA , the unique difference is that these time so much people ignored the warnings

Unrelated to the storm… WHY ARE PEOPLE FILMING IN PORTRAIT MODE. Sorry…. sorry…. I know, I know, I’m taking the wrong thing from this. In landscape they could capture the whole picture of what’s going on…. it. just. drives. me. nuts.
