The cost of living crisis Stuart is just as bad here in the UK without the sunshine. Everything without exeption has become a lot more expensive. You can't get a doctors appointment either. I think they hope we will snuff it before they need to spend any more money on us. I own my house and don't have a mortgage buy my state pension is just not enough to get me to the end of the month. Bummer.

The Cost of Living raise is ridiculous. Why? Because we let it happen. Multinational Corporations are sucking up to record profits all whilst we permit them. Back in the 70s we'd boycott them. For example, don't buy olive oil for a week or don't drive your car for one day. Remember, during the pandemic the drug companies here in Spain began to charge crazy prices for the Covid test kit. Spain's government put a stop to that immediately. What happened to our government?

Been here legally since 1988 and now with the TIE no problems, but Diana 69 and me 71 are only semi retired because earnings plus HMRC and NHS pensions leaves us struggling each month, paid of the mortgage in the early 2000s but small remortgage (70,000€) doing major reform means a small mortgage until 2030, but we totally love southern Andalucia and "cut our cloth" to get thru. I was in hospital yesterday for small none life threatening OP, such fantastic efficient helpful and hermoso workers. Our accounts are down to single figures often but "no worries" 😅

Begona Gomez or not, their is absolutely no place for them here in Spain. This beautiful country cannot be ravaged by these people. It's difficult for everyone at the moment. Sadly, I have to report my relatives came across a very ugly incident in Málaga with a group of eighty Vox supporters. To be honest the UK cost of living is far higher but the wages are very poor.

If most people in the UK want to move to Spain and live comfortably they have to move lock, stock and barrel. The problem for most older retiree Brits is that they want to keep their properties and ties in the UK for their kids and grandkids. A large percentage of, say, Londonders are millionaires if they sold everything up.

Echoing most others - Australians are is what is called a “per capita recession” - cost of living increases everywhere you look here and right around the world. The only reason we’re not in a formally defined recession is due to the astounding number of migrants since the current Federal Government came to office just on two years ago. More people mean a “bigger pie” but everyone has a smaller slice (per capita recession). More people homeless, living in tents and accomodation near impossible to get anywhere. More older Australians retiring overseas, including Spain, as would otherwise be living in poverty. Official unemployment is below 4% but masks significant underemployment with people working two or more jobs trying to make ends meet. Tough times.

Stop going to supermarkets. Go to farmers markets. Canarian cheap tomatoes. 1.85 a kilo in supermarkets. Farmers market, local produce tomatoes are 60 cents a kilo. Same with most fruit and veg at a third of the price of supermarkets. And the fresh figs on the stalk etc are amazing. Other foods such as meat and fish isn't going to be so massively cheaper but far better quality. Go inland to your market, avoid tourist markets and feed yourself inexpensively even if you can't avoid the net zero negative impact on everything else that is forced upon you.

When it's hard to make ends meet with the same amount of money coming in each month the simple answer is cut back and go without, change your life style, gym subscriptions Netflix Alcohol etc nobody wants to give them up. Even food most people are overweight and still want to buy all those comfort snacks as in past times without to make any change. Change is needed to make ends meet.

Stu, please define Democracy in the EU. The elections for parliament this weekend may put out a message to the EU but remember that the Parliament itself has no power; all decisions are made by the (appointed) EU Commission. Basically Ursula can override anything the Parliament proposes.

Hi Stu, you won't find anywhere in western Europe with lower living costs than Spain and Portugal, there's always eastern Europe but wages are half of Spain's and culturally/socially at least 30 years behind Spain. In Germany, UK, France, Holland just about everyone is relying on welfare and benefit payments, get your pension after working 35 years but still need welfare to manage, UK they call it "pension-credit" in Germany "Burger-Geld"...but in Spain many UK-Irish-German-Dutch-Belgian etc. pensioners can manage on their meager pensions and see out their days on the med. Turkey used to be an option till the gov brought in new laws for only rich foreigners to reside, minimum €20,000 pension requirement a year, €3,000 a month for digital nomads...ridiculous because the average wage in Turkey is about €400 a month

Thing are bad everywhere - and will get a LOT worse before governments start handouts. Right now the economy sucks and we have high inflation - recession of epic proportions. Ok, good - once that is halfway handled, welcome to permanent job loss due to - cough - AI and Robots, which will be visible in 2025. There is no endgame where more than a few people still have jobs, simple like that. UBI is the only way out that I see.
@charlytaylor1748

Hi Thomas, it's a shame the dems wouldnt listen to yang. My 2 problems with ubi - how do you control inflation? How do you deal with immigration?
@ThomasTomiczek
@ThomasTomiczek 3 месяца назад
@@charlytaylor1748 Well, immigration is another problem - and one that you always have. Inflation is not a problem unless you print money. Tax the profits, distribute that. Remember that in this scenario it is not the Yang et al UBI - it is "no one CAN work". At same prices, company profits go through the roof - because there is also no human to be paid. This may include tax increases and - well, if you are in the USA maybe control the other spending (which is out of control and THAT causes inflation and debt) - but essentially you have to redistribute via taxation. No inflation created. Note that I am a die-hard capitalist - but I see no way that capitalism works for the majority of people (still great for the company layer) if their work has no value. Capitalism dies when the fundamental trade of labour vs. money disappears. Immigration is really another story - but this will be a world wide issue soon because even low wage can not compete with AI. Maybe tax the companies and split it - 70% to a global pot, 30% to a territorial pot, and the global pot is distributed by headcount. Because you want your people also be able to move where it is nice - because there is no need to be in one place anymore if you do not work anyway. There is a LOT that must be considered, but all this are implementation details, essentially.
@joestrummerr
@joestrummerr 3 месяца назад
No.... The main problem is our elected officials sold out our countries. Regulations are enacted to protect the majority. But, we do not have these controls but in turn we have corporate subsides and or free market capitalism. Emigration is welcomed by cheap labor jobs. Do you want to work in a restaurant?

Sorry but you are incorrect. Brits firstly can use the health services here without having private insurance. I work on a self employed basis and pay my NIE and taxes which in turn give me full access to health care should i need it. Secondly, no you don't need to prove savings once residency has been granted so long as you are working and paying into the system here. As for the cost of living, yes it has gone up dramatically. I would estimate at least 40% if not more. I am fortunate as i have been able to increase what i charge, but i imagine for those that are employed the hikes will have hit them hard. I am an immigrant to Spain and love it here, but having lived in a fair few other countries i can honestly say here is extremely difficult to make ends meet. If were not for the fantastic weather and the beautiful friendly people and culture i would probably have moved on again. As it goes though i don't mind being a bit short of money to live where i am here in Andalucia as the above more than makes up for the lack of high earnings. All the best from the mountains of the Sierra Navada. Summer is here. Enjoy.
