Interesting to hear you talking about the mitten crabs!! I fished Salters Loade 4 weeks ago where I normally catch a nice net of bream this time of year & fished 5hrs caught one skimmer & 8 mitten crabs & I emailed the powers to be & days later was more or less told to fish somewhere else ...that said it all !!!

Yup, they do not want to deal with the situation Del 🤷🏻‍♂️ Invasive species destroying the environment & ecosystem. The EA simply bury their head in the sand?

100% correct re-mitten crabs destroying Zander nests, thought this for a few seasons. I would say anecdotally average zed size increased, but now numbers have fell off a cliff. Whether it’s just old age or being eaten by two or four legged things not sure. Perhaps a mixture. Many Zeds appear to have damage on them from something with sharp teeth/claws/beaks. Seem to have damage/scratches to face area too. Wondered if this latter damage was from crabs or crays. However I would say Pike numbers have recovered a bit, but have noticed many appear to have mouths that’s had some abuse and have been caught multiple times. As for putting Zeds back. It’s disappeared off the internet, but I did once find a statement from the EA that stated where naturalised they should be returned. All mention of this has gone and replaced by the crt balanced approach position statement that puts responsibility on the riparian owner to decide. Meanwhile the corrupt MEM keep killing Zeds and generally harming the environment on the canals.
