WW'nTips-n- Tricks #080: Spalting
Spalting is an artform to itself in woodworking and dates back centuries. It's how many in the marquetry and antaria world used to color wood. Plus it's easier than you think to do, just be patient.

Great video. Thanks! Sometimes in the wilds of our farm I find downed trees with great spalting but some pieces may be all the way to punky. These can be salvaged by stabilizing the wood with resin and then turning. I use Cactus Juice most often for this. Put the blank in your vacuum chamber, cover with the Cactus Juice, pull the vacuum to get out the air, let the Cactus Juice fill the voids and cook in the heat chamber (NOT THE OVEn YOU USE TO COOK IN!). I saved about half a dozen red oak blanks that even I thought were a lost cause. Made some beautiful bowls with them. Again, great video.

I'm an enthusiastic woodturner. I live Ireland where the climate if very rainy so I always have a least half a dozen logs of various species resting under a hedge and which invariably spalt. It's a real joy cutting open a new one to see the beauty lying underneath. I really must get a copy of that book as it seems so interesting.

I am interested in watching you turn some of this. Turning spalted wood has its own unique challenges because of its softness. It always takes me much longer but it is beautiful. Hope you plan a video on turning it.

Great vid, Shawn. I love spalted woods and was fortunate enough to hear her speak a few years back (don't remember where, though). Very interesting info and she is an absolute wealth of knowledge on the subject. Spalted my own maple (actually let nature do it) when I was trapped in Ohio years ago, but let it go too far and much of it became just too punky to be useful. Just beginning a spalting experiment with some heritage live oak and hackberry. ;-) Billy

Are there some woods more inclined to spalting than others?

That log yielded some nice lumber. Excited to see some of the bowls you'll make with it. Question: With spalted wood, should they be "decoration only" bowls for food safety (since you're dealing with fungi)?
@wortheffort

Tim Cheatwood no, good safe. Read the book.

I have a lot spalted Beech and Silver Birch which I have used to make bees wax candle holders and similar, but not bowls. So far my sales of the spalted products have been 1. This may well reflect my skill level but I do think they are quite attractive, but in the UK at least for me at the shows I have been to, there is very little demand for this natural beauty. The last show I did before Christmas the guy nearby was selling all manner of hideous (in my view) nailed together soft wood christmas tree shapes and similar. The buyers loved them for reasons I can not comprehend. I am glad that you have good markets for spalted products. Maybe I should just cut up the wood and try to sell it as a raw material for someone else to work, the other alternative is firewood.

Springwood Cottage man I feel for you, it’s so sad that nowadays the demand is for faux rustic (aka garbage) woodwork. It kills me to see beautiful pieces passed by for stuff built with little effort.
@conradp.woodturning972
@conradp.woodturning972 5 лет назад
@@jakewwwjake There's also the problem where people have the mentality to throw a $20 bill at a beautiful piece that took hours to dry, prepare, turn, etc.. out of beautiful timber. Some people don't seem to appreciate true craftsmanship!
@jakewwwjake
@jakewwwjake 5 лет назад
@@conradp.woodturning972 This is true. And you can't really help them appreciate it either. most people at those shows want trendy items, not quality items. You have to find the right market.

While the fungus may not be harmful to (most) humans, but would the fungus continue to degrade the wood? Should it be baked to kill off the fungus?
@krtwood
@krtwood 5 лет назад
Once the moisture content gets below a certain level the fungus is not active. Any bugs in the wood may go looking for another meal though and kiln drying will kill those off.
