Shane MacGowan & Christy Moore accompanied by The Benzini Brothers (The Hothouse Flowers) perform the Irish ballad ‘Spancil Hill’ .
The song was composed by Michael Considine from Spancil Hill (also written ‘Spancilhill’) in County Clare, Ireland. Born circa 1850, he emigrated to the United States around 1870 with a plan to work and make enough money to bring over his sweetheart Mary McNamara, ‘Mack the Ranger’s daughter’ in the song, so that they could be married.
In the ballad, the writer dreams he has travelled to his home place the night before the village’s famous horse fair which is held every year in June. Observing the people who have gathered for the fair which is to be held the following day, he also visits old neighbours and of course his true love Mary.
At the time the song was written Michael Considine had made his way to California. By 1873 his health was failing, and in the realisation that he would never see Mary again sent the poem home to his nephew in County Clare. Gay Byrne's Late Late Show 1994

Last night as I lay dreamin' Of pleasant days gone by Me mind bein' bent on rambling To Ireland I did fly I stepped on board a vision and I followed with the wind Till first I came to anchor at The cross at Spancil Hill It being the 23rd of June The day before the fair Where Ireland's sons and daughters And friends assembled there The young, the old The brave and the bold came Their duty to fulfill At the parish church near Clooney A mile from Spancil Hill I went to see my neighbours to See what they might say The old ones were all dead and gone The young ones turning grey I met the tailor Quigley He's as bold as ever still He used to mend my britches when I lived in Spancil Hill I took a flying visit to my one and only love She's as white as any lily As gentle as a dove She threw her arms around Me, saying "Johnny, i love you still" She is Nell, the farmer's daughter The pride of Spancil Hill I dreamt I held and kissed her As in the days of old Saying, "Johnny, you're only joking As many's the time before" But the cock, he crew in the morning He crew both loud and shrill I awoke in California Many miles from Spancil Hill

This is very moving, halfway through Christie turns his body, his guitar, his voice and music directly to Shane. There was a sense of holding him. He was a poetic genius but he was also vulnerable and wanted to belong. I remember feeling intrigued by him and a bit confused as a child watching him, I'm not confused anymore. Thank you Shane and to all those who saw the light in you. Rest in peace ❤ ❤❤

That is actually so accurate a description of what the raw brilliant natural talent that erupted from the late Shane McGowan, his creativity came from his pain, from his perception of this world, and that raw emotion is what made him a genius. He could channel that emotion into words better than a poet, and made those words into song. A true genius that only scratched the surface of his ability in this world

What a masterpiece, two legends of irish music. Christy is like the narrator of the song, Shane is the raw emotion of putting pain into words, expressing his life's perception through song's, powerful in itself, and the tin whistle is a connection both instinctive and haunting, that your ear wants more and more. This is an extremely underrated version of this song. The most emotion poured in discreetly on the late late show 👌

what most dont realize is that christy was as "punk rock" as shane when planxty came around, those guys were heavy and unorthodox in their day like the pogues

@killingmewillnotbringbacky9177 3 года назад
I think that Planxty and Silly Wizard perfected Irish and Scottish music in the 70s and 80s, with a sound that was more dramatic than previous recording artists. The Pogues are cool in their own way, but I think of them as an offshoot more than an epitome.
@killingmewillnotbringbacky9177
@killingmewillnotbringbacky9177 3 года назад
@@neilarmschlong6315 I think you are not understanding at all what my point is and you are using this as an opportunity to get out some sort of aggression your are building up in some other area of your life. Yes, the Pogues are an offshoot of the Irish folk tradition. Anybody who's actually familiar with Irish folk music understands that their style is influenced by punk rock and jazz sounds, and isn't a pure expression of the genre.

I'm Irish and i was homeless for 3 years. One night in Dublin I was walking back to find a doorway to take shelter in from the rain and sleep in. I heard the orignal version of this song playing and it hit me in the right in the feels. I was having a right pity party . I was a victim of making bad life choices. Im still making bad life choices but i hope im less of a cunt. Now back to our regular programming. I love these prophets It hits me in my irish soul.
