i was the youngest lead singer of the blind boys of alabama.spanky played with usin the early 70's along with drummer tommy soul, they both remained friend's until their passing. eddie spanky alford is one of the finest pure guitarist ,iv'e ever heard and had the pleasure to work with. he could really make me enjoy singing even more. a good friend. he'll alway's be in my heart.
Keeping it real: A Gibson L-5 or Super 400 with flats will good in the hands of any competent player. But in the hands of someone like Spanky Alford? Ethereal. Respect and RIP...
Thank you for posting this. I spent about 2 hours learning what he played here. Mr. Alford may have passed on , but his notes and musical legacy can live forever with a video like this.
It has taken me practically that long to finally hear about this awesome guitarist. I literally just learned about him a few minutes ago. It is crazy that I haven't heard of him as I have been playing guitar since 1975.
@@Koollone Mr RU-vid allogrythm is a special thing. It keep uncovering special gems out their the world had hitherto never heard of. Its a shame he is no longer is with us. Mr Allford was allegedly a very humble man - but a special guitarist. Best regards.
@@simondavies6270 You are so right. I will definitely be listening to his music. And thanks to RU-vid, I will be learning from him as well. There are some videos where he shares techniques and insights into his playing and music in general.
Great playing and informative dialogue. When I first Virtuoso by Joe Pass I was always struck by the implied chordal movement when he played single note lines. He's set up such a hard groove you begin to hear the "ghost" changes he was playing to. I hear that as well from you. Thanks for sharing
Absolutely love his tone, and everything about how he makes it all look so easy. Definitely a God given and God acknowledged place in his soul. It's over my head, but I want to order this video and spend some time with it.
Wowwwwwwwwwww........( Mouth hanging open) wwwwwwwwwww!!!! I Love jazz guitar and now that's how it should sound vibrant!!! in your FACE!!! Spanky had that style down COLD!!! I bet he would kill some Bebop
Spanky was my friend, and I haven't met a guitarist in gospel, r&b, jazz or blues, yet, (myself included) who doesn't owe some aspect of his, or her, playing to this great man! He was a terrific person, and the singularly most incredible guitarist I've ever met!
Had the pleasure of meeting "Spanky" one Sunday evening, He came to my house with my son Shon Hinton, the most amazing Guitar playing I've ever heard, we sat and played then we all had dinner together, a truly great person and Musician, we even took in the show that night at church, didn't think to have Him sign that guitar that he played, it will never sound that good again! RIP SPANKY You will be missed but not forgotten!
What a wonderful tonality on that gorgeous L-5! And man, what a player! The Lord took him far too early ... but most of us are all too familiar with that stuff ...
Wow, thanks for posting and sharing. Spanky was a great man a true friend and an amazing guitar player. He is truly always thought of and may he REST IN PEACE🙏🏾 Spanky and I played together with Eric Bene’t. Spank’s rhythmic sound and feel blew me away, he had the complete combination that included Jazz, Funk, Gospel and he would throw some country at you. Spanky was very versatile. Love and miss you my brother! This was a great video and as always Spanky sounds amazing!
I'm not talking about his playing. Studio monitors sound different than an amp. I personally would like to know how Rudy Van Gelder got that classic Kenny Burrell sound with Blue Note, and even Kenny himself couldn't duplicate it afterwards. And Kenny Burrell was just as great, he just didn't have the same tone. I know that you know this.
We miss you Brother Spanky. I definitely do. God 🙏 forever bless your soul 🙏 You will always be the best Gospel Quartet Musician of all times in Jesus name 🙏 Amen.
