The ultimate sideman! They never mentioned his name but Spanky outplayed everyone on that stage, and gave that song all that quartet flavor! What a guitar player!!!
There will NEVER be another great Friend,Mentor and guitar player like Spanky Alford ! It hurts so bad 2 see my best friend gone. He gave me my start in the music biz' And there will never be another humble and giving man like Spanky ... So many artist out there he gave them there true start in the biz and a couple of them truly showed there appreciation Take me back in the days when people were golden. Rest in peace my friend I love you Spanky and thank you to who ever put this on here Hugs.
I wonder if people realized how amazing this performance was to witness. At the onset of this performance, they paid tribute to Sam Cooke. Sam Cooke was originally a gospel singer who was also influenced by the Dixie Hummingbirds. In the second iteration of this arrangement of the song "Lady", they exemplified the style of the gospel group, the Dixie Hummingbirds which has influenced everyone mentioned in my post. Then, for their conclusion, they switched to the late 60's and 70's style of the Parliament Funkadelic, the Barkays and the Mighty Clouds of Joy. This was a musical master's class in R&B. Well Done, Brothers, Well Done!!!.
I’m a preacher’s kid from the Deep South like D’Angelo and I recognize Pentecostal church, blues, neo soul and jazz when I hear it! He took ‘em home! 🖤
Love Spanky singing harmony too. A true musician's musician. Not out there for the glory, out there to serve the song in the god damn coolest way possible.
This was when D'Angelo began 2 express himself more as Frontman...Andre 3000 said it best on 'Greenlight' "U got'cha 1. Sometimes ya gotta step out from behind that piano...Let'em know what's goin' on!....Even Stevie Wonder got down sometimes!"
Sure wish D'Angelo & Raphael would hookup again....So nice 2 C the Late Great Spanky Alford set this jam session off (opening guitarist). Spanky is the Guitarist on D'Angelo's "How Does It Feel" & all over Tony Toni Tone's "House Of Music" (their best work). Now ya know.
Before BJ da Chicago Kid and PJ Morton hooked-up, there was D'Angelo and Raphael Saadiq. This performance never gets old, and I continue to coming back to it since first seeing back in 1997. Fave moment occurs at around 3:17: I wanna tell the gambler, tell the police, tell everybody...you've got to MOVE! Str8 Quartet churchin' from then on out. #respect
The greatest performances on the Chris Rock show came from D'Angelo and Raphael Saadiq hands down! They both came on this show 2 years later, doing their own thing and still bought the house down. Good Gawd.
+IJ Rogers What up IJ Rogers..I know you are D'angelo aficionado. You would probably agree with me when I say, that the music industry doesn't deserve D in their roster. He's on another level in his delivery. Its Beautiful! He brings out the best in the musicians. Thats what Prince do as well. You can hear he works on it. No Joke.
One day this performance will be regarded as highly as Hendrix at Woodstock Sly And the family Stone on Soul Train, Marvin Gaye singing the National anthem at the All-Star game Or Prince playing At the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Watch and see😊😊
One of the signs of true genius is to take something that is really complex and make it look like you are doing something really easy. The late great Spanky Alford makes his guitar part look like a walk in the park, gospel quartet playing at its finest!
blends together, like nothing ain't nobody holding they hand, they holding each other hands, with their voices, blending together. That's some shit. I'm loving it.
'Lady' is in my personal top 5 all time favorite songs. This performance was so special and delightful I am beside myself. I love D'Angelo and Raphael Saddiq, and together with their friends, they did not disappoint in showcasing their mastery as musicians, and magician performers of Black male soul music right here. I love them. These guys are heros to me. If I was president, I would knight these guys as national treasures.
wooow it's been 10 years since this video was uploaded and it's been 20 years since this show happened ! of course this is still a soulful performance and I still love it :)
