Spark Plug Change 2005 Dodge Ram 5.7 Hemi

Replacement of 16 SPRE14MCC4 Champion Copper Plus spark plugs in my 2005 Dodge Ram 5.7 Hemi. DIY video to save a little money on the labor. It's a little time consuming; however, not difficult. It looks somewhat intimidating when you look at the plugs buried under the brake booster area - but there is plenty of room!

Hey guys. I have the same engine too. Don't be intimidated by the lack of room on the driver's side. Once the coil packs are all off, things looks much different. It's not that difficult really. Just leave the packs off until the back plugs are in and put the packs on from back to front. Make sure you use the cheap champion plugs that were on the car when it was new. People have had problems by making mods to "better" plugs. Hemi may not like different plugs. And they last a good long time too. Even 30,000 is over kill usually. Probably very good to up to 50,000 miles. At 100,000 they will be junk and the electrodes will be far apart from being burnt down from use. Also, do not over tighten the coil packs. Just snug em up and do not over tighten the plugs. And you may want to mark all the wires so the firing order does not get mixed up. I just mark the rubber with regular pen. If you take off the wires to the PCM mark them too. The little red lock is easier to slide of you spray it with some oil. I mark everything 1 through 4 on each side from the front. Much easier than thinking about the cylinder numbers as the only thing needed is to put it all back where it was originally. AND IF YOU EVER TAKE OFF THE VALVE COVERS!!! be careful. those bolts will snap very easily and part of the bolt will be left in the head. Most of them will be easy, but spray all of them first and let it sit. Usually the ones near the exhaust manifold are the trouble, usually the three (of five) in the middle on the bottom in other words. Use a 1/4 inch socket wrench so you do not have much leverage and at the slightest question that you are torquing too much stop, spray again. Torque lightly! On any trouble bolts work em out in intervals, 1/2 a turn here, half there and spray them many times as you go along stopping an waiting on the oil to work in. Better to take your time and do this than break any off.

Old Hot Rod trick. after old plug is broken loose, use an old hose that fits in place of the boot to hand take em out without dropping them in case you do not have a good holding rubber in the socket or an old socket that had no rubber in it. Putting in use the hose til hand tight then use socket. Used to have to do this trick with Headers in the way, back in the day.

Huge help. I was putting this off because I didn't want to tackle the ones under the Brakes master cylinder. After watching this and doing it myself it was a piece of cake. Being one that is prone to being easily frustrated I decided to tackle all the easy ones first so I did the passengers side and then the 2 at the front on the drivers side. I then packed up my tools leaving the last two for the next day. Knowing I only had those last 2 (4 plugs) to do the next morning made it so easy to tackle them. Why would I do them last instead of first and get them out of the way? Because if I ran into trouble with them it would have stressed me out knowing that not only did I have to get these done but I also had all the others still to do. This way if I ran into trouble I knew I ONLY had these two to deal with and that the rest were done so I could take my time and keep my cool. Worked for me.

Had no problem at all on my 2012 RAM. Used the recommended universal magnetic plug socket. Plenty of room on driver's side. Not so good on passenger side for back two cylinders. Electrical wire loom is in the way. Needed to cut tie wraps and disconnect 4 connectors from the fire wall to have clearance to remove coils. Last plug closest to fire wall required sliding plug socket between 2 heater hoses blocking direct access to plug hole. Otherwise was not hard, just time consuming ~ 5 hours. I see why dealers and shops want $4 to $500 to swap plugs. Swapped out at 50000 miles, not at 30000. Will swap again at 45000 miles. Plugs had 54000 miles on them and just noticed slight occasional miss at idle. No degradation in performance or mileage.

I found this video very helpful. Even after watching though I still didn't thing to put my hinge joint directly onto the plug socket. I went back and noticed it after I changed my plugs. It would have been much easier to access the back plugs had I done it the way you showed. The passenger's side is definitely much easier than the drivers side. One question though, are those really 1/2 inch drives you are using? They look like 3/8 drives.

you shouldn't clean the Throttle Body while it's attached and plugged in, it had it's own little motor and enough rpm to cut off a finger if it accidentally engages so be sure to remove it before cleaning and it helps to get all around the part and inside easier for a better clean

30,000 miles?? I know they "say" that, so you will bring it in more often so they can make more money. That's their deal. My first spark plug change was at 75,000 miles. Truck still ran and started perfectly. I looked at the plugs that come out and they actually didn't look too bad...lol. still changed them of course. So...those champions will easily go 75,000 miles. Also, when you do change them, why not go back with some NGK 100,000 mile plugs?? Or some other high mileage plug. To do all this work every 30,000 miles is just ridiculous to me. Not necessary for sure. And yes, ive done my own mechanical work my whole life. Just like my dad and my uncles. Grew up around it. Good practice the first time for sure though. You definitely have mechanical skills brother, no doubt. Just not needed every 30,000 miles...no way!! Peace 😁✌️✌️👍🍻🍻

@Glock274Jimmy
@Glock274Jimmy 7 лет назад
Hi Kristi, I've never disconnected the battery when changing plugs and my Dad, who has been a mechanic for 40 years doesn't do it either. There is no electrical current going to the plugs and therefore, no risk of an arc from the plug wires. Having said that, some people may say to go ahead and be safe and disconnect it. It could prevent someone from touching something and zapping themselves while doing any work under the hood... And as far as tightening down the plugs, I'm sure someone could look up the torque specs for it, but I just snug them down and have never had a problem with it... Happy wrenching!

You really only need a gap the plugs if you're using copper spark plugs otherwise you will break off the electrodes

Waste Spark method. A “wasted spark” system is used on the 5.7L engine combining paired, or dual-firing coils, and 2 spark plugs per cylinder. The coils and spark plugs are connected with paired, secondary high-voltage cables. Each cylinder is equipped with 1 dual-output coil. Meaning one coil mounts directly over one of the dual spark plugs for 1 high-voltage output. A second high-voltage output is supplied directly from the same coil (using a plug cable) to one of the dual spark plugs on a corresponding (paired) cylinder on the opposite cylinder bank. Each coil fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously on each of the cylinder banks (one cylinder on compression stroke and one cylinder on exhaust stroke). EXAMPLE : When the #1 cylinder is on compression stroke and ready for spark, the #1 coil will fire one of the dual spark plugs on the #1 cylinder (directly below the coil). The other dual spark plug on the #1 cylinder will be fired by the #6 coil. At the same time, the #1 coil will fire a “wasted spark” to one of the dual spark plugs at the #6 cylinder as coil #6 also fires a “wasted spark” to one of the dual spark plugs at the #6 cylinder. The firing order is paired at cylinders 1/6, 2/3, 4/7, 5/8. Basic cylinder firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Two plugs per cylinder, better fuel economy and more power.
