This song is very hard for me to listen to. Last winter I was insanely depressed and wanted to stop existing. I found Sparklehorse and resonated with his work heavily and binged him all winter. When I decided to listen to his debut I was laying in my bed and ended up falling asleep to the music. This song came on while I was dreaming and in the dream all my family and friends were at a cabin with me and a nuke hit and everyone but me died. I cried when I woke up. I have since gotten better and am happy. But anytime I hear this song I feel an odd sense of dread but regardless, I love this song.
The voicemail always makes me think about the mortality of my own mother, I’m only 18 but I know I’m going to miss her when she’s gone, and I know I’ll weep when I hear this song.
Bought the album from HMV when it first came out. I have this song, along with Saturday and Cow on almost every CD compilation I ever made since; still listen to this regularly. It never gets old, in fact it gets younger, and better than ever. Fucking magnificent x

I was working in an over supervised school and arrived each morning in the dark. One morning I arrived to find a dead owl in the car park. Incredibly sad. Also, it seemed like a comment on the whole situation.
This was not directed by John. It was directed by a fellow named Pete Ortel. John fleck played the man in it. Nice fellow. It is a shame the resolution is so bad. It is a different video than was conceived. Pete had built a tremendous and intricate diorama like a huge miniature rail line in his own living room but with a river for the miniature model of John to float down and experience strange things. Odd and wonderful storyboarding. The crew, young and enthusiastic, mostly unpaid and excited worked to make something unique. Clever practical tricks like having the actor and all the set pieces on rollers to move around choreographed like dancers were a fun visual challenge. We shot it all in Pete's little Silverlake house. Unfortunately Pete became monomaniacal, and at about the 23rd straight hour, one rant was too many, everyone had had enough, not to return. I wanted to see the thing finished though, there was a lot of effort there. The next day I managed to scrounge some film, I couldn't convince the assistant camera to come back, he looked at me like I was crazy haha! I shot the next day solo and we got some very neat things. We only had a handful of people as no one could be convinced to return, and I sure was not going to call anyone into that hah! We ended up shooting a pretty long day of course and at the last shot Pete vanished. Hard to do in your own small house! The rest of us remaining pitched in to get the equipment put back in the vehicles, shared a laugh and a beer and finally went home. The next morning first thing, Pete showed up at my place twitching DEMANDING the undeveloped film. I had a moment of hesitation I confess, I had rented the Camera and lights for him for a pittance leveraging my relationship with the rental house. I never heard or saw from him again, no one ever got paid, I had to pay the rental company out of pocket to keep my reputation intact, and because it was the right thing to do. Imagine my surprise when I saw it here haha. That whole second day is not here. I wonder whether, all tweaked, he looked into the cans to see his good work in there before he brought it to the lab?

But my friend has a band up in Gloster and we have been kicking around some Ideas to do some simple but creative things... I'll let you know if anything comes of it. be cool and keep rockin!
@@editor4958 Damn, thank you and I appreciate taking the time to respond. I've watched all of Sparklehorses mvs I could find. Its this beautiful odd treasure trove of dolls, trinkets, toys, masks, horses, meadows etc. The aesthetic to me doesn't die out. Its like watching a collector go through his attic and make it come to life. Im in Ohio and I'm in Kentucky here and there sometimes I already make music but I lack the full understanding on how to direct/shoot a good video. If you got a crew and just need someone to help out forsure let me know, im tryna learn the basics. I feel like the only way you really understand how to light a scene, background, etc is being on set and learning firsthand and I got no interest in LA 🤣.
@@ladiesmannumerouno I can sure understand that. I wanted to try my hand there and it was a trip for sure, but one that gave me some pleasure and plenty of weird experiences too haha! And sooo many stories. The guys in the band have a unique talent that I dig too. If you have a will to do it, just start making things, don't let anything hold you back. One of the scenes in the video was based on "The Death of Marat" a painting by Jacques-Louis David. You can learn a lot by studying the Masters. Start looking at the techniques of how the light works, the color, the composition, see what you find rewarding and emulate it. The tools are so accessible now. We shot that piece on film. 90 feet a minute of it. You had to buy it, and then develop it too. Then you have to pay to have it scanned. Man it made it hard to pull together resource to even start a project. You can get a pretty capable camera now at Target, or better yet Craigslist! It sounds like you have the enthusiasm to make some interesting work. I for one will look forward to seeing it.

Wish someone would work out some sort of distribution deal as to where I could hold a 'Sparklehorse' album. Can't seem to find any in RTP which is a real shame. Thanx for sharing Godspeed
i google it in the netherlands and still can find 3 albums to buy, vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot, good morning spider and it's a wonderfull life. also availeble in NL sparklehorse and fennesz into the fishtank. and yes i got them all :) including the EP (chords i've known) what was part of vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot when i bought it more then 20 years ago, and still runing :)
