I found Sparklehorse and Mark's music because his father, who was my landlord, noticed my guitars and told me about him. I had no idea that a local small town virginia legend had lived and died right under my nose. Such a sad story from an amazing musician that became one of my favorites after he had passed.

Thank you for telling Mark’s story. He had been through so much, .... despite knowing he was having a hard time with his divorce and losing his home in the mountains, getting the text “I’m sorry brother. Mark did it. He’s gone.” was one of the most devastating moments of my life. I wish he was better known. Very grateful that you took the time to tell this tragic story of one of the most amazing people I ever met.

Man........ Thank you for taking time to put this clip out into the ether..... Mark is one of my favorite artists all time..... Mark was brilliant and authentic... There is a gigantic gap between writing songs and playing music and being a genuine artist. Sparklehorse/ Mark was an artist.. His music made you feel which is what true art is intended to do.. I live in Los Angeles and have worked on many musical endeavors personally. I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging with Mark on a handful of occasions. I went and supported his music anytime they played in town or on the coast here.... Most definitely some of the best music created from the early 90s on.... More people would benefit immensely in taking time to listen to the brilliance he created.. Thanks again for the video brother...

Thank you for this vlog. Your respect and admiration for this man and his music is evident and will lead many new people to look into his body of work and his backstory. The approach you took with this vlog, walking through nature illustrates just how much you care and benefitted from this man’s use of his time on Earth. One of your best and that’s saying something because you consistently put out excellent content.

Thank you for this really lovely video, never heard his story so clearly put together before, good work. I first heard his music on a bus-trip through the Chinese countryside in 06 on a family holiday when I was 12. My dad had this small pink mp3 player and I listened to his music there to pass the time. I wasn't really a kid who liked listening to music at all but marks music really just had some strange effect on me. Its probably the most unique sounding and most atmospheric music I've ever heard. Its music that's truly 500% its own thing. I've never felt much of a strong connection to songs of other musicians/bands, its like its hard to relate to their messages, but when its Sparklehorse its like it directly punctures through to somewhere in my psyche. Thanks for listening if you read this far. Hope you all have a lovely day.

Thank you so much for this. I’m a HUGE Sparklehorse fan and although I knew some of his story, there was a lot I didn’t know and your video has filled in those blanks. His music holds a very special place in my heart as it’s got me through some of the most difficult times in my life and literally saved me at points. I’m in the UK and saw him 2005-ish when he played here. It was a fantastic gig, but somewhat bittersweet as it was the last and only time I’d ever get to see him. Thanks once again for this. 🙏

I just turned 23 recently. I wasn't even around in 90s but his music has a very special place in my heart. I've been struggling with depression for years and years and it doesn't seem like it's ever gonna go anywhere. Whenever I feel like I'm at the bottom of it I listen to his music and it somehow defuses the feelings for a while. I guess it's because it feels like somone would understand the feeling. It's just beautiful. I wish I could tell him how much his music means to me and how many times it saved me. I'm also glad to know there's a big group of people who also enjoy his music and care. It makes me feel less alone to know there are people who share my interests in lesser known things. Thanks a lot for this great video ❤ And thanks for trying to make more people know about him.

I started listening to Mark Linkous and really appreciated his music a few months before he died. I love that he was from Virginia and that he had a lineage of coal miners like my family. I listened to an interview of his where he explained the way sound changes and becomes a different sound through the trees. Some people make me feel less alone in this world. Thanks for the memorial of him. I still love him and his songs come to mind for me on a semi-regular basis. "return to the clouds"

Discovered Sparklehorse after It’s a Wonderful Life came out. Somewhat ironically, for me, Linkous filled the void left by Elliott Smith. So glad I got to see him live in Chicago 2007. He still holds up as an amazing and creative producer - and a poet that puts Edgar Allen Poe to shame.

My favorite artist of all time. I actually got into Sparklehorse in 2003 at 18 years old when my ex gave me a copy of Vivadixie and said I'd enjoy it. He was right. I put it in on my way home and was absolutely in awe. Never stopped listening since. When he passed my (new) boyfriend said "hey didn't you like some guy named Mark Linkous?" (he only knew about him because of me when I played Cow on repeat one night when I was drunk.). Anyway he pulled out an article in some magazine that mentioned he passed that week. I'll never forget it. Absolutely shattered and heartbroken. I saw him play once around 2006 or 07 so? I have copies of every vinyl CD and cassette of every album. I love how he used a lot of found instruments, sounds, and old radios in his work. I know know he was really affected by the murder of his friend Bryan Harvey from the band House of Freaks (his entire family of 4- wife and 2 very young daughters) that occured in 2006 in Richmond. They were victims of the Richmond spree killer. I also love Cracker to death. Absolute amazing band. Do you know what the favorite song was that Lowery played for him while in the hospital? Imagine if he killed himself that first time dealing with pain. We would have never gotten Good Morning Spider, It's a Wonderful Life, Dreamt for Light Years.... and imagine now what we don't have because he is gone. I have a tattoo. It reads: "I'm so sorry my spirit's rarely in my body it wanders through the dry country looking for a good place to rest" another: "the parasites will love you when you're dead" I also have a Cracker lyric tattoo: "save me a place beside you when you lie down to sleep at night someday I'll get it right" I have a tattoo of Elliott Smith lyrics: my mama told me "baby stay clean, there's no in between" I have a pet chicken name Sunshine and I'm going to get a tattoo of her with she covered me with wings and held my head and said "poor thing"

I will listen. So tragic. The clinical depression he lived with is not about being down in the dumps. You can't just snap out of it. Love and support is necessary. You described his struggle so well and paid a beautiful tribute. As one who has lived with depression and counseled others I appreciate the attention you have brought to the illness. You have the gift of revealing beauty of an individual. Your love of Mark's music as well as your compassion for him really came through in this vlog. Thank you for all you do. M. Belinda Davis in NC

Mark actually died on my birthday. My wife and I both cried. I have pics from that show in Lawrence KS and one with him and my wife after. She told him that she felt like a dork asking for a pic to which he replied, "well, I'm a dork". He also told us that on the Radio head tour, they had a girl playing bass that didn't know how. They had to tape notes above the frets so she'd know what notes to hit. He also told us to read Cormack McCarthy, Child of God. Awesome/ weird as hell book. My wife just reminded me that he said that he wanted to bring his billy goat on the bus on tour but the band said no way.

Hey man I totally get you, sparklehorse is also for me such an immesurable treasure.. i saw them with Radiohead in munich 1997 and was totally capturef from the start. When someone yelled „Radiohead!“ between songs, Mark casually said „we’re not fucking Radiohead“ it was so funny. I was devestated by his death and had practically noone to share my grief with, except my first girlfriend i had been to the concert with. When we would listen to vivadixie in endless rotations back in the day, she said she would only hear the line „I’d like to tell you how i feel“ from saturday, and then again when it came on again. Sparklehorse forever in my heart. Thanks for this video

Jordan, The work you do on this channel is impactful and has contributed to transforming the RU-vid platform from one of entertainment alone to one of quality and meaning. Each view, thumbs up, comment and subscriber you earn is a testament to you and all the work you put into every video. No matter the subject or the person you are highlighting in the videos- many of whom who have passed - you treat them with dignity and respect. You do not sugarcoat the truth and harsh realities of their lives, but you do it in a way that humanizes them. Above all fame or superficial considerations, these were human beings like us who loved and were loved and you make sure the viewers do not lose sight of this. Several of your vlogs come to mind such as Joan Crawford, Roscoe Arbuckle, Marilyn Monroe and, now, Mark Linkous (someone whose life and music I was unfamiliar with but have begun to explore thanks to you). Also, your appreciation of history comes through in every video and is great to see. We must not lose our connection to the past. I would like to email you or send you a fb message with some ideas I have for possible vlogs if you are interested. I know you would do the late singer Jeff Buckley justice if you did a video about him. He did a cover of the Leornard Cohen song, Hallelujah, that was simply amazing. He was one of the greats...gone way too soon. He and his music should never be forgotten. Wishing you and Jah much love and happiness this new year! Sincerely, Samantha K.

I love his music. I hiked a trail in NZ at dusk, hoping to see kiwi birds on Stewart Island. I was listening to 'dreamt...' and this little bird hopped along the track ahead of me. With the sun going down, the music, the bird and the scenery, it was a really special moment and Marks music really captured how it was. :-)

Man - thanks so much for doing this. It made me teary eyed to hear someone else say out loud how I feel about this guy's music. Sparklehorse songs are all in top rotation in my head all the time.

Wow man. Thank you for doing this. His music is like thinking back on a distant memory or dream that you can’t ever get back to. I’m so thankful for his music and Mark as an individual, really nothing quite like it! Any word on the documentary that’s supposedly out there? I can’t find it anywhere.

What a wonderful tribute. I have to tell you I have no idea who this person is or was but that I think that he would be very pleased hearing the kind things you have to say about him. I'm so sorry he had such a rough life in so many ways. And I hope he finally found some peace after his passing.

Truly a beautiful tribute, your ability to tell a story is beyond most others. I could almost see the poor guy on his last day, so sad.

I remember reading about Marks death somewhere, I read the messages from other musicians about the influence he had on them and I went on RU-vid to have a listen to Sparklehorse to see what all the fuss was about. After I listened to a few songs I kept thinking to myself ‘I know that song, ain’t know this song, I know this song’ but I couldn’t say where I knew them from. Then while watching various films/TV shows I started to recognise his music in different places. He created some beautiful music and I would have loved to have seen him live.

Many thanks for this vlog - loved them ever since hearing Rainmaker way back when and was fortunate to get to see them 3 times over here in the UK - once supporting Mazzy Star whilst he was still performing from the wheelchair after his London hotel collapse - 'A sad & beautiful man' RIP Mark 💔
