One of my great joys is hearing from fantastic guests with diverse perspectives. Penny Brown, a retired Senior Lecturer of Comparative Literature at the University of Manchester, brings a literary perspective to Sparks' music. We discussed Shakespeare, classic literary storytelling, and other related topics in relationship to Sparks' wonderful music. We even touched upon Ron's iconic glare, and we were visited by a Teddy Bear!
Penny writes about Sparks' music on her blog, sparkstalkbypenny@blogspot,com. She's written a scholarly examination of the Bergman album, shared some thoughts about Latte, discussed Sparks' regional impacts, and has covered many other wonderful topics, as we discuss. Be sure to check it out at the link below, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as i did!
Please subscribe - this is unique, invaluable content and I'd like others to enjoy these wonderful conversations. And it helps with the RU-vid algorithms. But mostly, it's about the content. Thanks!

Ron's glare is one of the reasons I became a fan, plus of course everything else. Great episode!

This is my favorite episode so far. Penny is wonderfully articulate about both aspects of Sparks - art and entertainment - and she is warm and fun. I hope you bring her back for deeper dives. Thank you both for this video!

Europe had its act together more than the USA when it came to Sparks. Where I live in Texas, Sparks were so ignored.. They came early in the 1970's but then not again until last summer.. 40 years later.. So I missed out on all the wonderful early tours. But thankful I finally got to see them last summer. So glad you interviewed Penny ! Lovely person .. Oh yes !! I for sure have read or watched films when referenced.. and also have learned a lot of things I did not know or know well.

What a fabulous conversation! And with regard to Shakespeare, don't forget there's also "Titus Andronicus wearing a snorkel in my pool..."

"Seduction " was horribly misunderstood... Even by me.I read the book The Magic Lantern Bergman's autobiography . and *then* went back and gave "Seduction" a listen..It really made me turn around about the whole piece. I have a high respect for that piece now. and oh yeah the subtle jokes got me hooked from the beginning..Long story got the "death glare"( a tiny one) from Ron when I yelled "yeah...Ron"...Like when Pete Townshend did once ,,I felt honored both times lol !

Penny talks about a concert at Manchester University that she missed in 1995, I left a Manchester United game at half time to go to it for what was meant to be a 9.30pm start, pretty sure it was near 11pm when they came on.
