Sparks - This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us | Reaction!

Sparks is a band that has been requested, and I've heard some RU-vidrs I watch praise them as well. I was simply not prepared for Russell Mael's falsetto voice. I also wasn't prepared for Ron's mustache. I loved the dynamic between them in the video. Russell was having the time of his life, and Ron looked about as serious as you can get. You can hear the influence these guys would have on future artists.
Thanks for watching!

And of course one of Morrissey favourite bands of all time 😂😂 incidentally there is a really good documentary on Morrissey from 2004 called ‘The Importance of Being Morrissey’ would love a reaction video to that - it’s quite good to be fair 😅

Loved Sparks since I saw them as a kid on Top of The Pops in 1974 singing this song. My Dad (and famously, John Lennon) said 'Hitler's playing keyboards'. Or words to that effect. 😄

I remember seeing Sparks on Top Of The Pops in the 70s - Ron Mael staring at the camera from behind his keyboards!

Always glad to hear this unique group. Ron was listening to Bach at the time, and wrote those twists and turns, and Russel had the talent to handle it. They've been making music for over 50 years, on many labels. Right now they are having a bit of a resurgence in popularity for 'The Girl is Crying in her Latte'. In my opinion, they tackle subject matter no one else would ever touch. There's a Hippopotamus in my pool!

Great to see you reacting to this one. Brilliant dynamic between them wasn't it - wonder how many subsequent synth duos were influenced by it. Sparks is one of those bands who manage to sneak in some of the most unusual chord progressions and intricate vocal lines while looking/sounding effortless - and being pure infectious fun. Their track 'amateur hour' comes to mind as another example.

Always liked listening to Sparks. Have not seen this video before. Only seen the BBC Top of The Pops clip where Ron just does lots of sinisters stares and eye raising directly to camera. Used to scare me back in the 70s when I was little. Well worth a look. Enjoy how you react to the less obvious songs.

When I was a little kid I used to strut round my bedroom singing along to my 7" single of this (and being so young was able to hit all the high notes). The only thing I could hear over the top of all the resultant din, was my mother shouting at me to "SHUT UP!". Happy days! :0)

Great reaction. Ive been a fan of sparks since 1979. If you think Russell is singing high here, check out the song Equator, also from their kimono my house album. This song is low by comparison. Also Edgar Wright made a documentary about them a couple of years ago, and a film they wrote called Annette starring Adam driver opened the cannes film festival in the same year.

It ain't me who's gonna leave! This song plays in my head whenever I dislike someone I am forced to interact with - I never clocked the asking out business, I just thought it was about a fight - heartbeat increasing with anger, fear and adrenaline. I feel like an element of 'nonsense poem' is also present here. On further inspection of the lyrics, I think he is fighting someone else over a woman. I don't know, I prefer my interpretation anyway. Of course Morrissey mentions Sparks and especially this track in his autobiography. Another artist he praises is Patti Smith. I believe I have recommended her album 'horses' before, but it screams to be heard, as soon as I clicked with one of her tracks I could never go back. She has this wonderful strength in repetition-. Anyway, thanks for reading.

Originally the song was written with the verses describing scenes from well known movies and were supposed to end with a famous line from each movie but they just couldn't get it to work so just went with the "this town ain't big enough for the both of us" line throughout. I'm sure I read/heard that it was originally titled Some Like It Hot before changing it. I've probably butchered the story but it was something like that! Edit - 'this town ain't big enough for the both of us ' is from the 1932 movie The Western Code.

Nicky Nick(Dinky!)…glad you reacted. Russell’s voice isn’t always in a locked falsetto. Their style of sound changes through the musical landscapes of the eras(even to today). As far as a sparks goes…I love their Moroder era sound(Number One Song in Heaven) and their 80s Valley Girl Soundtrack era(where I first heard them) with “Eaten by the Monster of Love” and the awesome “Angst in my Pants”. Nobody writes puberty pop quite like Ron.

I can't imagine how good it must be for you to hear this for the first time. I was only around 6 years old when I first heard it and it was one of the first songs that made me think music was going to be important to me. I was blown away. That said, I've never thought about the meaning of the lyrics so thank you for the interpretation. ;o) Keep on exploring the music of my youth Nick, you're doing us both a favour. You might want to try my current earworm, "Back of my Hand" by The Jags. They never really did much else of note but that one tune is magnificent. If you don't think there's a video in a 'one hit wonder' then have a listen on your own time. You t won't regret it!

I guess it's all subjective, but the references (and sound effects) of bullets could refer to the guy getting metaphorically 'shot down' by the girls he approaches. And if he 'aint gonna leave', maybe that's because it's the girl who always leaves? Anyway, great eccentric band with a huge catalogue!

No so sure about that, Queen were dabbling with rock opera long before Rhapsody, such as My Fairy King, March of the Black Queen and The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke among others.
