Awesome exercise. Your opponent is pretty great at winding, which is quite essential at maneuvering a much larger sword with vastly superior reach but a bit slower. I love that he also demonstrated how half-swording is done in Chinese swordsmanship and use it assist with grappling and fight at close-quarter, which is difficult for a sword with such as a long blade.
absolutely, the Nodachi/Dao was much faster than I'd expect and once I got in range it's no easy feat as he either winds the sword around quicker or switch to half-swording
The Nodachi and Chinese armor is all custom made or self made by my friend who is an expert in Chinese Historical combat. Currently there's no one making Dan Dao or Miao Dao for sparring that I know of. The katana is from SIGI
I think it was designed to counter a lot of things 😁 I believe the name itself means "the horse-cleaving sword". Obviously it cleaves infantry just as well as it does cavalry
Thanks. They have special techniques for manoeuvring the nodachi in tight quarter, I'm asking my friend here to do a vid on that :) people know this already but nodachi or zweihanders are very very agile and can be incredibly fast despite their size
Miao Dao its diferent of the No-Dachi, sice No-Dachi its more curve in its shape, and the Miao Dao its chinese, and No-Dachi, japanese... They have some diferent tecniques in its use too...
Nice and cool:)!
What are good ways to break through the defense of these long swords bc they seem almost impossible to beat. I struggle sparring with swords the length of my own, can’t imagine winning a battle against one of these.
Battlefield swords like nodachi and zhanmadao have a tremendous advantage over personal defense swords like katana. Think of it like an assault rifle vs a pistol. That said, if the swordman with the shorter sword is much more skilled or lucky, there are a number of things he can do to close the distance and deliver close strike where his sword is more maneuverable
Takes one to know one 😁 yes I've been training JSA for 8 years now, I'm more koryu and less kendo though I can say that one of the ryuha I studied had a founding influence in Kendo history
