Wing Chun master and martial-arts instructor Master Wong rates eight Wing Chun fights in movies, such as "Ip Man" and "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," for realism.
Wong breaks down the accuracy of Wing Chun techniques and weapons in "Sherlock Holmes" (2009), "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" (2021), and "Ip Man" (2008) and "Ip Man 3" (2015), featuring Donnie Yen. He explains defense and attack combinations in "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" (2015) and "Bangkok Dangerous" (2008), featuring Nicolas Cage. He also looks at the history of Wing Chun in "Wing Chun" (1994), featuring Michelle Yeoh, as well its influence on Bruce Lee in "The Way of the Dragon" (1972).
Wong has been a Wing Chun practitioner for the past 35 years. He teaches Wing Chun, tai chi, and Jeet Kune Do as well as other self-defense techniques through his RU-vid channel and online courses.

I really like how he mentioned that if you're in a real life situation and someone pulls a knife, your proper response is to execute a karate run. No matter your skill level, don't use your hands against a knife, unless you're in a karate romcom and your love interest is a trauma nurse.

Doesn't try to talk up his own martial art, instead actually analyzes the sequences for accuracy with Wing Chun and even talks about the strengths and weaknesses of each martial art. It wouldn’t be fun to watch or legal if one dude just poked another one in the eye, kicked him in the balls, and chopped his windpipe. from how I've heard it described most to all of these moves are applicable, but they aren't to be used by basic fighters for self defense. If you have no experience fighting you need to start with boxing (or kickboxing) and wrestling. Once you master basic strikes and grappling then you're advanced enough that you can start learning these more advanced moves. The idea is that Muhammed Ali could have potentially been pretty great at Wing Chun if he had learned, but if you want to be pretty great at Wing Chun first you have to be a bit of an Ali yourself. At least that was my take away when it was explained to me. I'm neither an Ali nor a Bruce Lee, so take that for what it's worth

Do you have any pointers on figuring out from first impression and/or my first class if a school is legit traditional Wing Chun or a watered down version? I have done little bits of Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, and Tai Chi (less than a year each), but most recently and for the longest time Wushu. My main interest is Wing Chun so I'd like to be able to find a high-quality school. If, for example, they require info about you before joining and reserve the right to reject for any reason (one particular one in my area does), could that add to potential credibility? If they say they teach through a specific lineage, how likely is that true? If a known instructor such as Willian Cheung visits periodically is that a green light?
@c99kfm
@c99kfm Год назад
@@mikeexits Lineage, tradition, secrecy and exclusivity are generally signs of bullshido happening. One or two are not a definite warning sign, though, many martial arts teachers have a historical interest in their arts and may be enthusiastic about lineages and traditions. Japanese martial arts, in particular, tend to stick to the traditional ceremonies of sitting with your legs folded beneath you and bowing, "it's good for discipline". What to look for is, in general, sparring with resistance. If wing chun is taught, for instance, and you're only allowed to "spar" using chain punches -> the many saos -> chi sao, then the only resistance you're encountering is in-style resistance, which works well within one set of rules - see arm wrestling, for instance - but is less generally applicable as self defense. Names can be good. If you want to learn William Cheung's style of martial arts, and he periodically visits, then you're likely to be able to learn the same style as he is using. I worry more about my own ability to defend myself than specific style, so I look to the resistance sparring.
