"These are one of those times where it doesn't matter whether or not your partner hits hard first. You just don't hit back hard, or you'll die" - Had me in literal stitches
You can definitely see Saenchai started to slip back into a more intense, serious "fighter" mindset toward the last seconds of round 3, and that energy lit something inside him midway in round 4. Pretty sure Saenchai's gesture in the beginning of round 4, the "hug", is him attempting to remind himself to loosen up and not get too serious. He could tell he's being hyped up into a full fight mindset. I think he felt the impact of your tactical adjustments after the first three rounds, and began to slip into higher and higher intensity once you started to find more success with your feints, which opened him up more (otherwise he just eats leg kicks all day and block/parry/trap everything else). In addition to that, you started to really push your reach advantage in round 4, and landed a much higher volume of crisp jabs and crosses with the help of posting against him with your long guard. After taking a few to his forehead, Saenchai's instincts kicked in hard, and his counter overhand right got super fast and more forceful, and he hopped in with his counter-knee with intensitiy. How he "woke up" at 11:18 was fascinating to see. What a master, such grace and a good heart.
@@StephenOu I remember Saenchai saying that the Thais shout out the attacks to keep sparring playful. I thought maybe because Jeff did not do that, Saechais mind went automatically into Fight mode 😅. But mad props to Jeff for keeping his cool with the legend. It was great to watch!
@@centurionpetrus1784 yes. He looks like an amateur compared to Saenchai. His kicks look strange. Almost like karate/Taekwondo point fighting style that isn’t effective. I started BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai and wrestling in 2008. I know what I’m talking about.
What an honor to have sparred the GOAT himself. Saenchai's fight IQ is so incredibly high. I've never seen another human being at any point in time fight on his level. There may have been others who were faster or stronger than him, but no one understands a fight like Saenchai does.
@@MMAShredded I think you defeated yourself before you even started. Sanchai is extremely gifted and even in sparring you spent most of your time on defense allowing him to dictate the terms of the fight. I can't say I would've done anything different but walking into a sparring match anxious is self defeating at best. Overall you did excellent against a fighter of his caliber and I hope you learned a lot and gained some confidence because of it.
I know many love to hate him, but only guy comes close is Floyd mayweather. Yeah out of the ring stuff and avoiding big fights etc… but the man is still a magician. Learned the rules of engagement in his sport and executed them flawlessly for 20+ years and still going
@@waltherwagner9711 "or else you will die" - summed it. And the look in Saenchais face of surprise and care after realizing hes going to hard says it all. I would love the opportunity to learn from this man. Though learning in real from Jeff would be very much appreciated as well (aka always be a nice guest in the comment section :o) )
Yoo, that was actually scary when he started to get “fight hyped” for that split second. He legitimately had to check himself and seemed like he mentally had to reset. That was the inner demon of a real Thai champion that we just saw. 🙏
Its wild watching Saenchai actually spar , normally you see him on the Yokkao videos sparring with hobbyists and newbies so its really really light and slow for the seminar . its wild seeing him move full speed but still controlled and playful . like HOW TF is THIS OLD MAN STILL SOO DAMN FAST itS amazing . can only imagine how hard he was to deal with in his prime
In his prime : champion in 6 weight divisions classes in both Lumpinee and world title and fought 2 great champion and won 2 champion title in a row in one day with those tough as nail Thai fighters.
@@Daveshotpocket nah... there are many with an hour bank to scare mere mortals that still can't hold a candle to the BeastGOATDemon-thing inhabiting Saenchai's body
I had the honor of both attending and sparring with Saenchai when he was visiting Singapore, he's so crafty and playful, his sweeps are literally effortless. He is truly the G.O.A.T!
This spar was incredible to watch 10/10 it’s so cool that you kept pace with the GOAT and got him to show a level that we don’t get see him use in sparring too often. What a showcase
“Or else you’ll die” I’ve seen so many saenchai videos, but for some reason this one shows how lethal and fast he really is. Thanks for the great vid and analysis!
Probably because you see here Saenchai actually stepping up his game, while in most of those seminar sparring vids he’s just playing with people and adjusting himself to around their level.
Jeff Chan is without question a pretty incredible Muay Thai fighter, and look at how Saenchai is just playing with him. This isn’t a reflection on how “bad” Jeff is, it’s only a reflection on how Saenchai is pretty much the greatest of all time in Muay Thai.
The constant pressure, hand trapping and fluidity of that man is insane. And I think you're right, from the looks of his torso he's definitely a lot stronger than he appears to be. Very educational and fun to watch!
Sanchai’s best attribute is his ability to maintain composure, he keeps it soooo playful, sparring or fighting for a belt. The level of comfort in that squared circle is just incredible.
That's why in Muaythai rules they have to give a big score to the fighters who could controlled the ring first. And that's why a lot of people who never know about Muaythai rules they probably thought some match looks like they robbed. But Thai people thought that if you could control the ring that means you could control your opponent and of course you could control all the crowd there. 🙏🙏💕💕
Wow, that's wild. I've had pleasure of being at the same gym with Jeff a while back, he taught kickboxing there on Saturdays (Lin Martial Arts) and I know how good he is. But seeing Saenchai doing that to someone like Jeff is simply crazy. Good stuff Jeff, all the best to you in your future competitions.
Yea I was a bit surprised how hard Saenchai was going, having watched him dozens of times in other sparring. Saenchai often plays around, and he pulls a bit more on his head strikes. Whereas he was punching Jeff at the limit of what I consider safe sparring. It's not like Jeff was going hard, which often happens with people (mostly amateurs) who get too excited that they're sparring Saenchai. If anything, Jeff was being much more careful. It may simply be that Saenchai was intentionally teaching Jeff by applying constant pressure and sweeps, since Jeff relies a lot on movement, misdirection, and kicks.
@@taugrim Cuz he saw jeffs size. Jeff is almost considered a heavyweight , in muay thai, i belive its over 170 there. Its probably to do with weight too. Jeff probably has 20-30lbs on him.
@@taugrim because Jeff is strong and talented so Saenchai is giving him what is a challenge, simple as. If Jeff was weaker he would have gone easier. Some incredible stuff - we should be glad that he was going against a tough opponent, it means we get to see his techniques with more force and speed. Saenchai has neither the height or weight advantage; it's to be expected. Legend of a fighter
@@AdamOwenBrowning What you wrote makes a ton of sense. Saenchai probably intentionally dialed up his sparring because he knew Jeff could handle it, it wouldn't escalate, and it would benefit Jeff.
Jeff you're so good, but you definitely stepped into the lion's den with Saenchai lol. The fact that he played with you for over half of this and you got him to actually act a little serious says a LOT about your skill. Conversely, Saenchai looked like he was just happy to finally have someone good to spar with lol. I hardly ever see him break a sweat in training. Also that look in the end when he brings the smoke, clenches you, looks you in the eyes and contemplates murder and then takes the high road and backs off 🤣. Bro you escaped death lol
Im telling you of all the youtubers and influencers saenchai sparred (even some of those who intentionally goes hard on him) only jeff sparked that fight mode on him. Like saenchai wasnt angry or trying to teach a cocky sparring partner a lesson, no he was really into defeating jeff for a solid second or two.
Amazing sparring Jeff! Much respect shown to the great man throughout, and no retaliation to the harder shots returned at any point - rightly so, but also shows great discipline from you. Well done!!
I guess I find that odd that bcs saenchai is a legend he's allowed to go pretty hard on people and is just inherently better already. But any retaliation leads to huge backlash from any comment section. Kinda odd imo
who teaches this type of mindset? so hit as hard as you wanna get hit unless the guy can fuck you up? jeff is proving what i been saying for a long time. the guy is a bully. he does nothing but beat up fitness students in 98% of his videos. and when hes in the ring with someone who can beat his ass. he throws those "dont hurt me" sissy punches.
Saenchai does so many little feints, movements & so many attacks in his arsenal with different angles & so fast that it just overwhelmed my mind in state of paralysis by analysis just watching. Could imagine myself just being like Deer in Headlights 1 on 1 against him.
Jesus. This really puts things in perspective. Jeff you’re an amazing fighter and it just shows are unbelievably legendary Saenchai is. Thank you for this video and breakdown! 🙏🏾🔥
He's so good at the clinch. He must have a great sense of his opponent's balance and good sense of timing that he can sweep someone and it would look like they were about to fall anyway.
You are as fast as he is now. But can you imagine how fast he would have been in his mid 20's? He's so incredible to watch. The spar is perfect, Sanchai really upped his level here and revealed his true self, while still holding back, and being playful. He looks more dangerous here than in several of his fights last year, and he's pulling his punches and kicks. His sweeps are magnificent, it's fun seeing how easy he can toss you to the canvas when he wants.
His humility, feints, traps, deceptive switch legs to sweeps back to punches plus his angling hook kicks are mesmerizing and incredible. I'd been knocked out 15x over minimum trying to figure him out. I'm rewatching this all year. Got to learn from a southpaw GOAT. Stoked for the Superlek vs Rodtang fight coming up too! Watched them all light spar on YT. 💯💯💯 Jeff you did wonderful. Keep up the martial arts journey 💯 🥷⚔️🥊⚔️🥊⚔️🥷
Jeff, we all love watching this journey man. Truly. You are living the story of the old school traveling martial artist looking for his greatest challenge. Love it man
Jeff thank you once again for your amazing and fearless footage. There are some gems in here from the legendary Senchaii I'm going to implement right away. That body cross knee combo is nasty!
I was really looking forward to this! Looking good in there, Jeff! You also showed a lot of restraint when he went hard and through out the all the rounds. He was throwing and you were composed just playing. Thanks for the upload awesome to watch.
I'm impressed with how well you were able to connect some shots. It seemed like as you sparred he had to work harder and harder to be as oppressive as he was. Being said, I feel like he's a bad anime villain that somehow always has more power scaling left lol. No matter how you adapt, he's just going to go to the next level above you.
What an honor to get ragdolled by Saenchai! You looked like you were really enjoying yourself. Just incredible how Saenchai is able to adjust to everyone's level, and also adapt so quickly to different styles. I watched this vid with a grin the whole time 😄Thanks for sharing Jeff!
Beautiful sparring between the both of y’all Saenchai so fluid. It’s like walking for him Both of y’all students of the game. Respect Im sure you’ll grow tremendously after a sparring like this congrats!
Thanks for sharing! I've enjoyed every second of this sparring. The amount of techniques in the Saenchai's arsenal and the effortlessness of using them is unbelievable.
Amazing!!! His sweeps are so fast, effortless and smooth. It’s like a boxers jab. He can do it in his sleep. I slowed it down so many times and the reaction time and muscle memory is absurd. his pattern recognition and overall reading for strikes is insane. Like my first Muay Thai coach always told me “you will never outkick a true thai, you just won’t.
What an honor. It's so different when you're versus a seasoned veteran. The ring is the same size as usual, but they can make it feel so small. The pressure is insane, you can't get overwhelmed or you forget to move how you usually do and before you know it you have your butt on the floor. 11:11 OOOOOO baby! That got spicy for a moment there!
What a privilege to be able to watch this and learn from it. I can only imagine how great it must've been for you to actually participate, Jeff. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂While everyone marvels at Saenchai for his highlight reel signature moves (overhand left, left kicks, flying knees, cartwheel kick, sweeps), the thing that truly amazes me about him is that his fight IQ is so high it allows him to break the "rules" we've discussed on your channel before that smaller fighters like he and I normally have to do to stay alive. He doesn't dodge and weave and move around constantly. He comes forward in a slow and deliberate pace and never backs away as if he was actually a heavyweight fighter. He constantly pressures instead of hit and running. He uses both physical and verbal fakes (the mind games as you put it). He crosses the centerline right into the other fighter's ideal striking zone which would normally be suicide in order to execute his flying knees and sweeps. And he gets away with it all and makes it look so effortless. He truly is a unique fighter and deserves all his accolades as we can see here.
As a Thai I have to say I agree my friend, Muaythai is all about attack and receive the attack and counterattack, just like the Kru will teach Nak-Muay to Check the kick not to dodge the kick. This art was designed for fighting with a lot of enemies at the same time like in a war so dodge is not the best way to go sometimes when you have a very limited area and what you could only do is fighting with the strong based and receive the damage with the right moves and then counterattack to finish. So muaythai fighters they do not have a footwork but they instead have their own Muaythai fighting Rhythms when they fight to make their base strong and most of the time they all will try to fight in a very close distance to finish their opponents.
Right away I notice how his ring iq and subtle footwork makes it so you never get distance. I'm pretty sure this was a deliberate choice since Sanchai will fight on the outside just as often. He knew you wanted to dance away and make distance and removed that.... Beautiful
Great video ! Great Control ! I saw so many vids where some random dudes were sparring too hard on him which is ridiculous ! You did a great job respecting that legend at the same time learning from him ! Awesome job man !
His fighting experiencie is insane. You do a movement that an average pro fighter dont expect but saenchai already saw it, eat it, learned how to counter it... It's insane
I do think Saenchai sparred a bit more serious this time round, when compared to his other yokkao videos. However, I think he did it out of respect to you man, light spar just wouldn't be as nice and fun.
That was a beautiful session, lots of respect on both sides. It's one of my dearest wish to have a chance to spare or at least meet Saenchai in my life. I am really happy for you that you had a chance to do it and it feels like a survival session 😅 It feels so hard to predict what he can do and the moment you raise your lef a sweep can come at any time, insane 😵
@@MMAShredded You are welcome, your content is always really on point! Let me know if you pass by Berlin, Germany, I am training at Fenriz Gym and we would love to have you there!
It's like watching a light-footed T-1000 terminator walking down the main character. Scary how good he is at reading what you're going to do while in the middle of your striking sequence. It's like he's got an AI processing unit analyzing your movements while you're still at the beginning of them, and then adjusts his defenses/counters on the fly. Craziness.
Omg this is amazing! 🤩👊 you make it look easy to fight a legend like saenchai, it was really entertaining to watch and thank you Jeff for sharing your journey with all of us! ❤️🥋😊
Saenchai is truly the G.O.A.T. I swear he is actually a cyborg because his ability to read balance and weight distribution is next level. What a privilege to get to spar with him. It is like getting a physics lesson from Einstein. Amazing.
Such high level sparring! Always appreciate your videos Jeff! So much to learn when I watch these sparring videos. The blur made this video look so cool 🤣🙌🏿 had a bit of a hazy look to it which made it a real good entertaining watch. Thank you!
6:52 Bro, I don't why I cracked up at this. That's your hallmark combo and just seeing the GOAT Saenchai discipline you with cheeky hammer fists is hilarious.
Love how you're able to keep your composure and kept your sparring technical Jeff, plus your cardio is impressive to say the least ! Sucks that probably one of your most important sparring video ever is blurry. Love from a 37 yo Toronto based Muay Thai aficionado - TKMT downtown :)
I know... I wanted to cry. im not sure what happened with the footage...... oh and I am actually moving to Toronto in aug!! looking for a gym to train at!
@@MMAShredded ❤Oh wow ! August, you couldn't pick a better time to relocate! If you have time come and check out TKMT downtown you'll love it ! Not sure how it works on RU-vid but I'll try to send you my Whatsapp via DM, let me know when you're around :)
Props to you man for keeping it together in that moment, I've had crap like that happen to me in both Judo and Kickboxing, that shit triggers me hard and I immediately respond in kind, seriously, amazing stuff.
The footage is definitely blurrier than your normal videos. But even with your normal footage, it might be nice if you started recording in 60fps for sparring footage at least. 60fps looks a lot more natural for sparring and you can get a lot more detail about it. Especially when you're fighting at this level.
I usually record on 60 fps, in fact this video was recorded on 60 fps. I didn't change any settings and for some reason it became blurry, same with my filming with trainer gae :/ I really don't know what happened but I was told I need to increase my shutter speed
I can't imagine what it would be like to actually spar him. He seems supernatural just in video, I'm imagining it's an overwhelming and incredible experience to learn with him in front of you.
@@MMAShredded He came to a gym I used to train at a few years ago, and I regret that I couldn't participate that day. I'm really jealous, and also happy for you that you lived that experience. Wow.
Watched this video when it came out, but showed up on my recommended and watched it again. Always loved Jeff's content, but I wanted to point out the respect shown in this sparring footage by both of you. I see so many videos of younger guys with something to prove going WAY too hard with the GOAT Saenchai, and it always ends with Saenchai proving why he's one of the best. As always, Jeff and Saenchai were super respectful in this sparring and STILL got great work in.
and I'm not trying to psychoanalyze the guy, but I think Saenchai just got lost in the moment when he threw that insane combo later in the video. The man spent decades in fight mode when in a ring
This sparring session showcases saenchai's skill set really well. You pointed out a lot of things i would never notice. Don't think other analysis videos break it down this well. What's crazy is how quickly he can read the situation and respond correctly everytime. Was there anything you did that you believe worked well on saenchai? Or is he just that good?
Maybe Jeff will answer you differently, but I could see that Jeff was getting in some good work when he kept Seachai at mid distance by mixing his jabs, crosses and low kicks like at 2:30 - 2:46 & 4:23-4:40. Jeff has a reach and somewhat of a striking speed advantage so he tried to use it. But you have to understand that Seanchai has over 350 professional fights. There really isnt anything he hasnt seen or dealt with in the ring. He will patiently block or get hit by jabs and low kicks to set up his offense. Even as a 42 year old, his nervous system still has Muay Thai cooked into it from a long prospourous fight career.
@@TheDocbach i am 38 and i dont feel my self any slower or older than when i was 20. He 42. He has been athletic his whole life so 42 is still not so old
@@gabrielgabriel5177that’s because you probably wasn’t in the best shape you could have been in your 20s then And I say it with absolutely 0 offense intended But if you actually are serious in your 20s you reach a physical peak until like 27/28 that just decreases after Ofc on a regular basic human scale you can still feel athletic fast and everything, but compared to the 20s athlete with Olympian condition, that can’t compare
incredible discipline and control on your end Jeff. Very impressive how calm and collected you are especially when he was going hard. Amazing sparring match. Excellent fighters.
Thank you for posting this. What do you think it would take to not backup against Saenchai in sparring? I feel like he is the kind of fighter that, if you stand your ground, he would take it as a challenge and go hard on you until you conceed and backup.
He was throwing way harder than u did. I get that he's a legend and all of that but i would never want to train with someone with his attitude. Imo its just cocky
