I did the Killington Beast race this year (two weeks ago today) as a first-timer, with absolutely no prior training besides a couple 20 minute sessions on a 12 degree incline treadmill in the week leading up to it. I'm not a runner and rarely train legs, although my legs are naturally strong from 15+ years of hockey. New shoes too. I'd definitely say the biggest thing that hurt my time was stopping and letting the cramps take over...but then again, I was cramping so hard up the death march that I physically couldn't walk unless I stopped and messaged my legs. 8 and a half hours later, I finished. While I'd never try an Ultra with no training, its 100% possible to do the Beast without training as long as you're generally in good shape and hydrate beforehand. You definitely have to find that "why", there's no doubt. I was ready to quit by mile 5, but literally was just like fuck it. Apparently the Killington Beast is the hardest one too, so I'm particularly proud.

Damn, congratulations. I failed an Ultra Beast a couple years back. I was able to finish a loop and a half, but then my time expired. It was cold, wet, and painful. It was a humbling experience. I need to go back one day and try again.

Much respect, homie. That's seriously a true accomplishment. I'm sure you were confident before, but I know your confidence in how far you can push yourself and what you're able to achieve has soared. And you're so close to 1k subscribers. Good for you. No too much longer now and you'll be able to earn a little from this channel (for more races I'm sure).

@obstacleactivist9741
@obstacleactivist9741 5 лет назад
i did not do any ultra specific training or endurance training. i am a short course and sprint racer and never run more than 3-5 miles at a time. as i said in the video, i had an injury that also prevented me from being able to run or training running at all for a few months leading up to the race. i did not skip any obstacles, i actually only failed one which was the spear on the second lap. my point in making this video was because i had many people ask me how it went or how i completed it knowing that i do not train or do endurance events
@eddyyong66
@eddyyong66 5 лет назад
since you seems nice enough ..I am gonna nice too..but u have to understand what’s the consequences for you posting videos like this..ultra is no joke..u could easily get people injured by posting info like this ..oh yeah..I got injured but I finished a ultra ?! Maybe u did it but not everyone could do the same .I simply tired of seeing people got cramps and lying on the ground yelled” aw~! my leg~All of us should train for super and up ..period! Have a nice day

@@obstacleactivist9741 why does this happen.... I did the Spartan race 2019 SAN ANTONIO SPRINT - SUNDAY, MARCH 24TH 2019 I started at 2:30 pm and my number was 9415 59.08... and I have to say I did all the obstacle , but when I got to the rope climb I noticed a group of 5 guys that joked about the rope climb and went to do the burpee's . I climbed the rope and fell back down, they were in front of me as we ran and went around the dunk tank ..... this was my first race and going to to the 8 mile in AUSTIN
@obstacleactivist9741
@obstacleactivist9741 5 лет назад
Yup, sounds about right. That being said, that was in open waves so it's a "run your own race" mentality. Either way, it's crappy and makes for a worse experience, especially for a first time racer

@@levelup6815 Max? 12 hours if you start at 9 am, but you have to make it to the twister by 4 I think and the spearmen by 6. I was in the 9:30 am heat wand finished at 8:57 pm, literally was about to close when I came booking past the last 3 obstacles in a full do or die sprint after twisting my ankles 7 times earlier after what can only be described as a serious shit show on that mountain.

Hate to break it to people, but an ultra is not as big of a deal as spartan would want you to think ( its mainly marketing). Its work but far from impossible. I've completed 2 killington and north carolina. Its a long read but if you want to get a belt buckle medal read this comment because it will help more than most of the videos you see. The real trick to finishing is just mentality and understanding human physiology. 30 miles 60 obsticles is long, but you have ample time to finish. If you work a retail job and are on your feet all day you can finish with little to no training provided you are mentally prepared and don't have any underlying health issues and you have ample snacks for the race. Here is my point. Most races give you 12 to 14 hrs to complete. Lets go with the 12 to keep math simple. The average person walks at 3 mph. With that speed you will complete 30 miles in 10 hrs leaving 2 hrs to do 60 obsticles. That's 2 min an obsticle. Walls, hay bails, etc. Do not take anywhere close to 2 min to complete. That extra time you spare from clearing from about 20 of those obticles being walls means you have time to spare for burpies. Will you need to run during this race? Yes early on the cut off times are more strict. But you do not need to try to run this whole thing. Most people fail, because they have trained to run 15 to 20 miles at a time and figure they can just run 15 miles walk for 20 min and bust out another 5 miles easily and repeat. Spartans have rough terrain. 10 miles will feel like 15. So if you run 10 miles and stop to walk the body will go into recovery mode making it hard for you to do anything. Legs start to cramp, obsticals become harder. Esentually the body shuts down. Implement a 5 minute jog 5 minute walk routine and walk up and down steep hills. You'll have ample energy for the obsticle to not fail and the body will stay out of recovery mode. Last thing is cut off time are the same for everyone. Try to get as early of a start time as possible.

@obstacleactivist9741
@obstacleactivist9741 5 лет назад
You'd have to be more specific on the course and venue. Those times can vary, a lot. I've run sprints in 26 minutes and I've run sprints in an hour and 5 minutes so there's a big range there. All depends on the venue / year
