When the Spartans faced their greatest enemy, the Persians, there was a messenger sent to them. The Persian ruler, Xerxes, told the messenger to convey to the Spartans that they had no hope of survival against his masses. Yet the Spartans, not afraid of death, refused flatly to surrender despite their few numbers. In desperation, the Persian messenger looked at the Spartan King, Leonidas, and said "Our arrows will be so many, they will darken the sky and obscure the sun itself." One of Leonidas's captains stood, stared the messenger in the face, and replied grimly, "Then we will fight in the shade." In the ensuing battle, the Spartans were able to both hold back and slaughter the hordes of well trained Persian soldiers. Even when they were betrayed by one of their comrades, who revealed a route by which the Persians could attack the Spartans from the back, they sent the other Greeks back to safety, and fought alone. They stood till they could stand no more, and fell as warriors. Their sacrifice was never forgotten, and that battle remains one of the most influential and infamous battles of history. They called it "The Battle of Thermopylae", but we call it.... "The Battle of the 300".
@niranjandeshpande4378
@niranjandeshpande4378 2 года назад
Except the Spartans didn’t send the rest back. Originally they were planning to survive and hold until the other Greek got there. Once they were betrayed, the Spartans wanted to retreat but it was the thebans who decided to stay. Leo Midas knew he would be shamed if he ran while they stayed, so he stayed too. Also, they weren’t fighting for freedom because the Spartans were 10% or smth of the population of Sparta, the rest were slaves. That’s why the Spartans could never fully mobilize, because then the slaves would revolt while they were gone. The reason they were all soldiers is because they had time time, since the slaves did all the work. The Persians would’ve given them autonomy if they surrendered too, so the Persians weren’t the monsters that the racist movie portrayed them to be.
@matt_the_maniac
@matt_the_maniac 2 года назад
@@niranjandeshpande4378 Yes and no. He didn't send ALL the soldiers back, like you said (only some left), there were some who stayed, but they fell quickly. And they were definitely wrong to have slaves, but that does not negate their patriotism and sacrifice. They may not have been admirable morally, but their patriotism can still be respected. I've also never seen the movie yet.

An interesting point. And I think the Spartans of antiquity would agree with you. If I recall correctly, they weren't very big into individualism. They were soldiers, through and through. They did what they were told - no questions, no hesitation. They valued teamwork, and the well-being of the group over the whole. Most cultures view sacrifice as a noble and honorable act, but for the Spartans it was *expected* of you to sacrifice yourself for the whole, and you'd be considered absolute scum if you refused to do such. That's common in a lot of highly militaristic societies, I think.

Why don't our drill instructors and drill sergeants use quotes like these in the classroom and in the field? As part of basic training, philosophy of soldiering should be taught as well as general knowledge, skill, tactics and strategies, and customs and courtesies. Respect your enemy, and do not hate him or her, for he or she is a soldier as you are.
