Hi, John here with a video showing the camera calibration procedures for the SMT550.
Under the system menu, click on camera calibration
Select the FastCam and move the head assembly so that nozzle 1 is centered in the fast camera view.
Click "Calibration" - and then OK for a popup that is probably trying to say "keep your hands out" or "this may take several minutes".
This machine has 4 heads, and each has a fast component recognition camera in the front of the machine.
The calibration routine handles several things automatically - it compensates for out-of-roundness in the rotation gearing, lens distortion and calibration of how the nozzle looks when it is near, but not centered over the camera.
This is used as part of the on-the-fly component rotation positioning - since the heads are not all exactly in a line, they can't all be simultaneously centered over their cameras, and in fact, they only need to be "near" the camera for things to work.
The process uses special solid black nozzles with shiny tips that are easily recognized, and which have no moving parts that could contribute to a loss of precision in the calibration process.
The fast camera calibration takes about 4 minutes, as does the hi def calibration.
I added a soundtrack of the machine in operation - it is amazingly quiet, and the microphone is picking up fan noise from my network switch and clicks from a battery operated clock on the far wall...
Calibrating the hidef camera is the same - line up nozzle1 and press CALIBRATION
Note the "dirty glass" on the hidef camera - it is spotting on the inside, from the factory...

Hi John, when you do the nozzle calibration, what size nozzle are you using for the 4 heads? I have the 502 for nozzle #1 and #2; and the 503 for nozzle #3 and #4, since they only gave 2 sets of each size, and when I did the calibration, it always said the nozzle #3 is to large then stop.. it can not go any further. please help!

They should have sent you 4x solid “nozzles” that are used for calibration…

@@JohnPlocher Thanks for your replied, they sent me a few but not sure which one is solid nozzle, they seem to be label as 502, 503, 504 and so on, I will have to ask Jim to find out, what kind did they send me, thanks

@@xibfwbntxoovvajmuas2362 - the calibration tips are not nozzles - they dont have holes through them, and are painted black. They won’t be packaged with the real nozzles.

Hi John, with the best wishes from the Czech Republic. I have a question about the SMT550 machine. Should the cameras and nozzles must be calibrated again after the machine has been switched on? I calibrated them, but after the new start of the machine and pressing the button GOTO in the Camera calibration section, the nozzle is not positioned in the center of the camera. I thought that after calibration it will always be in the center.

I found that I needed to recalibrate when physically moving / leveling the machine, and when upgrading the software to a new version. I do not need to recalibrate between power cycles. The calibration procedures are complex and interdependent - are you sure they all completed and that you performed them all? I don't recall if there was an explicit "save" step at the end, but I do know that when I did things wrong (i.e., used 503 nozzle tips instead of the calibration ones) things didn't work as expected. Once the calibration completes, I don't ever go back into the calibration system unless I'm going to recalibrate. Instead, I use the system tab and set / goto a known x/y coordinate there... That "goto" should always go to the same physical location given the same coordinates. Finally, the cameras are calibrated to view the tips from anywhere "near" the camera center - that is why the calibration routine spins the tip in each quadrant enclosing the center as well as the center itself. I don't think that anything sets a reference point at the center of a camera, especially since the different nozzles are not themselves precisely physically aligned (i.e., while N1 might be centered in its fast camera, N2, N3 ... won't be centered in theirs...) Hope this helps!

Many thanks for your reply. I will try this method. Do you have video lesson about feeders setting? Unfortunately I not have an manual for system setting.

This is the part that is giving me the most headaches, calibrating the fastcams, it seems that it does it well but then it does not put the components in their place, all displaced. The only way I have found is to calibrate only the first cam, so it is centered and I can use only that cam.

Make SURE you are using the solid calibration nozzles for the camera calibrations - I screwed up the first time and used 503's and nothing placed right. Also, try to get the new (as of Feb/March 2020) software release, as it fixes a bunch of issues, including some placement problems. Finally, be sure to calibrate the pickup position for the feeders every time you change out the reels - the clamping mechanism is good, but still allows huge displacements when considering the size of 0603 and smaller dandruff...

@@JohnPlocher I have been able to calibrate fastcam 1, 3 and 4. I have deactivated number 2, which is the one that gave me problems, the problem is that it is very far from the center and I must increase the capture size, when increasing the capture size it collects the reflections that are outside the nozzle and it always gives me an error, I have tried everything, but for the moment I leave it like that, it is not very important because I can leave that nozzle for the large highcam components.
