Someone asked me to "mod" these speakers and I finally got round to doing it. Let me know if you hear a difference. (Ratings disabled because teenyboppers tend to come along expecting to hear a difference by listening through their phone speakers or laptops)

There's a little difference between the two speakers, the one that has crossovers and without. There's a little mid range when the crossovers was taken off. Crossovers usually removes certain frequencies of a speaker for a specific application. In that case on your aiwa I think the crossover is for removing some of the high frequencies on the woofer but its not that noticeable because its only passive.. Great videos as always and enjoying it.. Hows peanut and pancake doing by the way? :)

Disregarding the youtube audio compression, in my sound system the original box had more amplitude in the bass than the modified box. I believe this happened because you used a very wide insulator. This caused a large decrease in internal volume. Which I believe to have been calculated correctly by the manufacturer. To get a significant improvement, you should have used a thinner insulation, or even made another sound box considering the volume occupied by the insulation. Taking into account a margin of error of 10% in volume, due to the insulation.
@MyStonerMind420
@MyStonerMind420 6 лет назад
I agree somewhat. The bass IMO has improved. The other box has a little less insulation and is not centered correctly and I doubt they measured the insulation accurately.
@meademorgan6614
@meademorgan6614 6 лет назад
Usually insulation in the enclosure actually helps the speakers performance. In a sealed enclosure, it fools the speaker into thinking it is in a larger enclosure so if your enclosure is not the correct size for the driver is more forgiving. It surposedly also helps prevent standing waves in the enclosure. Now seeing how this is a ported enclosure , the insulation must be something more secure, so the movement of air doesn't blow it out through the port. If you replace a resistor used as a filter. If you don't use the same value it will change how the sound is filtered. So the frequency that each driver receives may take it out of its performance range. So tweeters can burn up, and woofers will blow. Because they are not playing in their optimal frequencies. When you disconnected the cross over network, you killed the sound of those speakers.
@rich1051414
@rich1051414 5 лет назад
I have never really liked using insulation for the padding myself. I have always just cut a pillow open and shoved in loose stuffing :P Maybe I am missing something, but it has always sounded great to my ears without causing a heavy reduction in low frequencies.
@DanLimbach
@DanLimbach 5 лет назад
@@meademorgan6614 Speakers cannot be "Fooled." Sound waves are simple and predictable. All you can really do is affect which frequencies go into which drivers, and the surfaces the waves hit inside the enclosure and at the points they leave the enclosure.

It sounds like the box's resonant frequency is shifted to a lower frequency...which is to be expected. Sounds smoother and less boomy.
@Phantom.3296
@Phantom.3296 6 лет назад
Its a LC low pass filter(that wire which is basically an inductor, and capacitor),its used to allow low frequencies to the the driver....
@robsorgdrager8477
@robsorgdrager8477 6 лет назад
I would assume that resistor thingy was there for damping or for some sort of safety / clip protection . those are a " bass reflex " type speaker and the aiawa amp had a section to it that acted like the old Kenwood amps and would control all movement of the driver . so its possible that resistor was to help qwell any free movement or " sway " of the woofer . they still sound pretty sharp for how old they are.
@EdgardoDC

Im conflicted. The standard speaker has louder bass and the modded speaker has the bass a little deeper, but not as loud as the other one. I would isolate them both, I think the standard had a little mid-bassy feeling

The capacitor is to stop the sub from popping under high volume and the pop that can be heard from the subwoofer is the voice coil hitting the magnet they put the capacitor on to add some resistance so when the amp sends the signal to the speaker it does not send the voice coil straight into the magnet

the original box is boomy because the tuning frequency is high (around 60 hz i guess). Most hifi manufacturers apply one layer of foam just on the back panel of the box. It reduces medium and high frequency resonance without reducing bass reflex efficiency that much.

What type of insulation can you use for this?
@MacMarytahu
@MacMarytahu 5 лет назад
the only effect of insulation is lowering the bass reflex frequency tuning and reducing its efficiency. Bass reflex is a resonance between the air volume of the box and the air volume of the port. By applying insulation you reduce the resonance.

The capacitor is probably being used as a simple low pass filter to make the bass driver more efficient
@cekpi7
@cekpi7 6 лет назад
capacitor is in high pass filter, it blocks really low frequencies (probably under 40-50hz or so) unless its a inductor then it could be used to filter out higher frequencies, but that wouldnt really improve bass
@BrodyOver
@BrodyOver 6 лет назад
capacitors are high pass filters, inductors are low pass filters
@gregkramer5588
@gregkramer5588 6 лет назад
a typical 12db per octave low pass (to send bass to a woofer) would be an inductor in series with the woofer and a cap across its terminals. For a 6db filter leave off the cap. In general if you have an 8 ohm driver/woofer that you want to cross at 1khz you would pick an inductor where the inductance in millihenrys would cause it to have 8 ohms of inductive reactance at 1khz and a cap that has the correct amount of capacitance to have 8 ohms of capacitive reactance at 1khz.
@orange4326
@orange4326 6 лет назад
its a high pass filter, anyways, ive found out that aiwa speakers capacitors are not as good as their speakers
@zackeryyoung3159
@zackeryyoung3159 6 лет назад
drumbeatP its an inline crossover. Its you're partially correct. Its made to filter out the higher frequencies actually. The subwoofer is for low end frequencies of 120hz and less. Its purpose is to keep the subwoofer's voice coil from cooking from too high of a frequency.
@davidfarmer2521
@davidfarmer2521 Год назад
I think the insulated one cleaned the mid bass up a bit although it does seem a bit quieter. From all my research adding batting to a woofer box kind of tricks it into thinking there's a bigger enclosure? I could be wrong it's been a while. All though you might have to pump yo the volume a bit I prefer the batting sound. Might have to tweak the EQ a bit after. Keep the the smoke in your lungs and out of your woofers!

@simonnordberg162 6 лет назад
Hmm, correct me if i'm wrong but isn't there a lot more energy in the bass frequencies? Then it would make more sense if the signal goes from the amp via the bass to the mids and high with a high pass filter between bass and mid than via the tweeter to the mid and bass with a low pass filter between mid and bass. The point being that the crossover is used to make your system more efficient and prevent blowing out your mids and highs. Not the other way around.

filling a ported speaker is good . less Box resonating when some types of lows hit and lessens vibration and doesn't sacrifice the speakers sound quality at actually improves it tremendously. i had to do it to a few of my polks and a set of kefs

wow those are some nice speakers! would love to find some here in poland for cheap :D btw if you puncture the membrane/faom on the speaker you can use some glue to fix it (make sure its the right one) or use some verry special tape. btw the capacitors are for the high pitched sounds usualy so the tweeters would only be afected if you removed the capacitor. ps if you are bored with your subwoofer you can make a conversion to it so there is a smoke machine inside you can togle on or off so when you are using it then it starts blowing smoke (the port size and shape sometimes can cause your sub to blow smoke rings)
