that test machine makes a great noise. I knew the moment I heard it I'd spend literally hours making it do that noise. I know this for sure because I've lost count pof how many times I've replayed 2:48

Hi Don. Very interesting indeed. I have often wondered whether the paper they used back in the day for those type speakers, became more Hm whats a good word ?. Harder , tighter, Etc ?. Seems my older speakers are much thicker and firmer, then say the more modern 50's type. Lol I have no ideal :) All my best. Bobby

+Bobby Tectalabyss I agree Bobby. It seems like they are ready to fall apart if you look at them wrong or like you stated, they are hard as a rock. Best, Don

+RestoreOldRadios , Don, do you expect the Total-Q to resolve after a sufficient break-in period, if there is such a creature as 'mechanical break-in of a speaker'??

+AMStationEngineer Tim, not being an audiophile, I'm not sure how much impact it will have and would appreciate your thoughts. I've read where playing a variety of music at a higher level than normal for a few hundred hours will loosen up the mechanical aspects and improve sound quality over time, while others heard no difference. Even though the rebuilt speaker for the Philco 41-280 works, it seems the Qes was impacted by the base plate being aluminum (lessened the magnetic field?) and the aluminum voice coil with no gap that we discussed in the earlier thread. In addition, the surround and spider seems a little stiff and this may be creating a higher Qms than desired or it may all tie back to the Qes issue or a combination of the two. Best, Don
