I'm a 75 yrs. old man born and raised in the U.S. I've seen a lot of history. First President I remember was Dwight D Eisenhower. I've never seen anything like this, it's very terrifying. This is what we always feared would happen and now it is. I probably won't have many years left before I spend eternity in the Kingdom of God, I will be free from this forever. They control half the House minus one vote. Democrats often vote as a block together- Republicans are more divided. Nothing can get passed without negotiating. A government shut down in an election year is a losing strategy. Democrats benefit from shut downs bc Republicans always get blamed. The Dems would have run on the sad stories and chaos and still probably would not come to the table to agree to more of what Republicans wanted. Republicans would have lost votes in the swing states. There are good things in the spending bill. There is a reason foreign aid was negotiated the way it was and got passed. Nothing gets passed, nothing moves forward unless the Democrats agree. Trump reauthorized FISA for 6 years in 2018. Johnson and the House reauthorized it for 2 years with the thought that once Trump is in office they can revise it. The Speaker was shown intelligence that demonstrated FISA is needed to prevent a terrorist attack in the U.S. He gave an example and he encouraged everyone in a Congress go listen to the security briefing. It is better to error on the side of safety to prevent another 9/11. Trump was with Speaker Johnson when he explained the reason for reauthorizing it in a press conference.
