Can't imagine how confused the waitstaff in the chinese restaurant must have been to see all the white people speaking Chinese and the one obviously Asian person in their party to not understand any Chinese LOL
I have this problems as I am currently studying in Beijing and my Chinese heritage (My grandpa is from South China) makes me looks very like local and I cannot speak complex Chinese (I understand most but can't speak) and the karaoke place clerk like talks to me meanwhile the only person in our group that's fluent in Chinese is this Ukrainian girl and he keeps talking to me even though I can't answer anything
I love how they are exact opposite of each other.gabie an Asian who speak many western language and there's josh a westerner who speak many Asian language.
As a person who understands Korean, English, and Mandarin(Chinese) I can feel my head spinning cause it's all over the place. I've been laughing the whole time.
Eng Teck Tan His pronunciation wasn’t great, but he tried his best for the RU-vid audience when he hasn’t spoken it in years. We all should appreciate that.
I'm am going to learn Arabic and I'm gotta made my kids speak it or In that case pass on pass generation because that Muslim do in Malaysia and Indonesia and Bangladesh and Pakistan
Not really if their kid don't want to learn it. My neighbor is half Chinese and don't know any Mandarin because she grew up in America. Kind of like that drama, off the boat something.
This is the first time I realize Josh’s family can speak Chinese. Josh’s Chinese is definitely a bit rusty. Certain phrases sound really good while others not so much. It sorta comes in and out a bit, but overall quite understandable. I am even more surprised that his mother’s Chinese sound better than Josh and also seems to be more fluent at it.
I'm surprised too, because generally you learn languages better at a younger age. But maybe it is because he went to an international school, where I presume they mostly spoke English, while she had to manage daily life in Chinese.
Well considering he is quarter Chinese and southeast Asian, I am proud he even bothered learning it and resonating with his grandma’s culture despite being majority British.
That's probably the only sentence I know how to say fluently in the languages I'm not fluent in (so that's all languages I've learnt in my life sans english🤭)
This was FUN!!! 😊but watching it back I keep noticing my weird pronunciation and grammar... oh well! 중국어 연습 좀 해야겠네!! 어렵다!! And yes, 我的妈妈和爸爸的中文都比我好!! ...但是他们不会说韩语~😜
I mean logically I know his mom must have learned Chinese while living over there but she's also so English I kind of never thought that she'd know it haha
Same. Maybe cuz we watch too many videos of people moving to korean and the kids r the only ones who understands korean and the parents can barely understand it that's why
@@allier1867 her pronunciation seems to be better than josh's. Hes pretty good for someone who hasn't spoken it in a long time but his ying diao (the chinese keyboard is a pain to change to on this phone) tends to run off quite a lot. While his mom has pretty accurate ying diaos (yes I pluraled it haha)
Maybe she was in a rural area where few people spoke English? If adults can get away with speaking in a language they are comfortable some of them will, so if someone has put in the time and effort to learn it is praiseworthy so yea I am surprised. I know people who live in a foreign country for 10+years and still don't speak the language
for someone who probably hasn't spoken chinese for many years, his chinese is very good. some intonations are wrong/off, but that could easily pass as a dialect, and the fact that it's been a really long time since he last spoke chinese. it's still easy to understand what he's saying, so big props to josh for managing to speak chinese for 24 hours.
@@SilentArc right! But genetics is full of surprise. I have friends who also like quarter caucasian on her dad side but she looks like fully asian but i also have teacher who also quarter white but could pass half white
Josh did extremely well for someone who has not been actively speaking Mandarin since he was a kid. There's a few grammatical errors but as a mandarin speaker, I could understand you fine and Mama Carrott's Mandarin is really good! Hahaha what language is next for the Carrott-Kook family?
gabie is so enthusiastic about learning chinese she reminds me of a little child mimicking their parents when they first hear them speak. its so cute hahaha
Love the fact that Josh just took over Gabie's channel and bombarded her w all the mandarin he could still remember. It may be limited but he could still remember some words after leaving China for so long. Well done! And I'm amazed that Josh's mom still remembers her mandarin!!
Where as Josh’s korean voice is more manly, his Chinese voice is really cute and fun. It’s weird bc for most people who speak mandarin and korean, it’s flipped. Chinese sounding manly and korean sounding cute
As a Mandarin-cantonese-speaker, this is extremely amusing!!! Josh's Chinese is kinda weird and hv twisted pronunciation😂😂 but damn i mean considering his background he's rly a language GENIUS to still rmb that much Chinese words and expression. And everyone gives him some credit to be confident in speaking Chinese in front of his international audience!!!
imagine being such a multilingual family to be able to do these kinds of videos in chinese, french, spanish and korean.... i love this family so much AHHAHAHA
hahaha same my mother language is english but i take chinese also and my results for chinese is better but i like korean so i picked it up when i was in korea
Hahaha same, English is my primary language and Chinese as mother language. I learnt Korean about 10 years by my own, it's really damn funny seeing gabie reactions
I LOVE hearing Josh speak Chinese!!! Love watching you and your community, Gabie ☺️ I am learning Chinese with my boyfriend right now because my boyfriend doesn’t want to learn Korean haha. He says Chinese is more useful.
Josh deserves mad respect fr... I know he’s quarter asian, but he’s literally a white man walking around London... who would know he knows 2 asian languages 👀🙌🏼
I love this genuinely!! From this ep, I understand how nice it is for Korean and English culture to be integrated and explored on Korean Englishman, because I could understand the Mandarin this time around. Seeing you guys speak in Mando and eat Chinese food was really really nice because I'm so familiar with that. I appreciate Korean Englishman a lot more now HAHA!! itd be cool to do a chinese series if you ever have the time to!! Hope yall have a lit year #2020
The effort of gabie to learn chinese...💕💕 At some point they understand eachother...or she understand what he was talking about and make it hilarious when she doesn't... I like how supportive u are to each other...
Haha Gabie is too cute trying to figure it out and mimicked what Josh was saying and Maureen’s Mandarin is really impressive! Your kid(s) next time... wow... I can only imagine (I love languages so to be able to converse in multiple languages is one of my goals). Love the video~ ❤️
As a half chinese kid who is very bad at it, I loved this. It was easy to follow Josh and relate to the struggle. Also his accent is very good by my standards.
they say Ollie is acting crazy when they study Korean, but when I watch this language series I think he's actually bearing it really well in comparison to Josh and Gabie.. 😜
Haha love this episode so much! I'm also a TCK, from Thailand, that spend primary school in Seoul and secondary school in Shanghai. So the mix of mandarin, korean and english really brings back memories!! 😄💕
