I’ve got the 7.10 to just see what all the hub-bub was about... Run some test, looking at the virtual offering, Red Hatting with CentOS 8, interfacing Win10 WSII with the Ubuntu 18.04, to test Port Foward to my Ubuntu on the r7.10, HyperV on a 40 node Rpi Cluster. And like WOW! It just works. Leaving it turned on 24/7 runs as good as my Toyota Tacoma, (maybe better) less gas and keeping an electric bill under a C note. Luv it!

I'm a big fan of used enterprise hardware. I've deployed servers that were in use by Target and switches that ran JP Morgan Chase. Can't beat the value!!! I tend to stick with Dell Poweredge servers and Dell Powervault storage. Routing and switching is mostly Cisco.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of supermicro, but refresh cycles of the corporate suckers are driving the secondary market price on Dell servers way way down. Looking to pick up a couple of R720xd's soon for direct attached all flash storage to replace my aging esxi servers. I just wish workstations could be as cheaply had. Thinkstation D30's are very nice. I plan to pick one up soon to replace my 2500k daily driver with dual e5-2687w's.

I have a R710 with 2 L5640s & 72Gb/Ram. It came with 2x300Gb drives. Thanks to you I've been running Xen with 1/2 dozen VMs on it using FreeNAS. Xen is all that's on the local disk. Its absolutely rock solid and runs great. Thank you for all you do for the community!

As far as a virtualization standard, cost wise the Dell R710 rack server is the champion for many home labs and small to medium offices. I would rather use that and buy it from Ebay with or without a warranty (you can add one with companies like square trade, but your better off with server company warranties), and stack as much ram as you want. You should get a second one just for the price (read cheap) and you have a back up server for close to nothing. I do like how you are coming into the ages with Xen Server! Congrats :) Please strongly consider switching from FREENAS to Starwinds since they have a linux configuration now and its free. Keep making good content my friend.

That I can respect and understand. That same discussion has gone on for years in Spiceworks. It's beating a dead horse at this point :) For the most part, most of the Linux admins with well more experience than I have ultimately written it off as a product not to use in SMB and Enterprise when virtualized. Still rare when on bare metal except for home use or experimental. Alas, it's still a few users pop up here and there with it :)

I have a backup server running FreeBSD-12 and ZFS. The server only has two cables; power and Ethernet. The server backups my virtual machines (send/receive from Linux to FreeBSD) and normal data like music, video, office stuff etc. (smb/rsync). Unfortunately the server only reaches 300 Mbps on a 1 Gbps connection. That server is a Pentium 4 HT at 3.0 GHz with 1.25 GB of DDR and 3 HDDs. The CPU load is ~90%, which explains the 300 Mbps. I can't complain, since the costs for the server was $ 0.00, all parts I still had lying around. The case is from Compaq and still has a Windows 98 sticker, motherboard and CPU are from a HP SFF from 2003. The system has 3 striped, LZ4 compressed HDDs 2 x 320 GB (2.5" SATA-1 and 3.5" IDE) and 1 x 250 GB (3.5" IDE). I don't worry too much about reliability, since the system is only powered on for ~1 hour/week and I have 2 backups.

I built 2 servers for half the cost of a new dell "server" ASUS motherboards FX-8350 CPU's Low end video cards Primary system has two RAID1 1TB pairs (four drives total) with SSD's Secondary system has two RAID1 3TB pairs (four drives total) with 7200 RPM dirves 2012R2 on both 32 GB ram on each 2 additional 1GB network cards for each (4 total extra) ***Don't forget your CAL licenses when using a server OS. Seems like I am constantly buying them as we expand. Went from being a simple shared storage, e-mail, and domain controller; to now hosting VM's for nearly the entire office. Everyone has high end performance now!

If you buy it for home lab or use, don't buy rack servers or at least check noise level. Dell and other major brands not care to much if rack server is loud. Also with Dell older generation making a lot of noise.

A lot of that has to do with ambient temps and firmware. Many enterprise servers also let you tune the fan curve to control the noise, but you may have overheating issues if you don't have a cool enough space.

Hyper threading doesn’t translate to an additional vcpu it could be consider .5 of a core. I️ have to disagree with you on desktop vs server with a budget. That same Dell R710 is the best system for a budget. You could go to an older R2 or R4 or R5 series to lower the cost, but typically it’s more R7 series sold in general, so it’s more usually available for aftermarket. Unless someone can’t afford $300-500.00 bucks then I️ don’t see a reason to get a desktop or workstation. Love the work you’re doing please keep educating everyone!

You have to keep in mind when selling to small businesses, selling them used gear without contractual warranties is an iffy game that many will not take.

IMO consumer level stuff is fine for virtualization. You save so much money vs brand new or even used enterprise servers that you can afford to stock exact replacement parts. For an enterprise ERP build a few years ago I spent just under $22,000 on hardware vs $80-120,000 we were being quoted by hardware vendors. Going used like with Server Monkey would have been roughly half that, $40-60,000. I built each server by hand and had spare parts enough to fully replace all the components in up to two servers. I've since left that place but that rack full of servers has been running 24/7 for over 4 years now. Just don't skimp on the power supplies and UPS backups.

I know this is an old post but I'm not sure you understand the difference between enterprise and small/medium/large office. It's more than just the physical equipment, it's the support and the company that comes with it along with equipment that's been tried and tested. I can guarantee that you can't roll out a server and chassis identical to an enterprise server along with providing the parts and support that you'll need to have with it for the same cost of a new server from Dell/HP/etc. Yes, 'hand built' servers have their place in the lower end of the market but not when it comes to the enterprise.

in enterprise replacing hardware early is a cost reduction believe it or not. newer generations of hardware increase both efficiency and density. more capacity in the same space that uses less power and therefore cooling? that is worth more than the cost of a new server.

I was at a conference and the Lenovo Server engineers told me that stock market trading firms upgrade really fast because stock transaction speed is directly related to money with all the high-speed trading. I imagine that is where lots of this hardware that is not very old comes from.

Just a suggestion: before starting to install anything on the machine, just look at the firmware page - in this case Dell - install the windows version that is needed (as trial) and update all the firmware in the machine. This could be the difference between speaking and shouting when you are near the machine.
@Elosee
@Elosee 5 лет назад
you don't need windows to update the Dell firmware etc, there is bootable iso's on dell site that scans and updates everything that's needed, I just did this on my r720xd its really handy, fully automated just sit back and let it do its thing.
@Zomby_Woof
@Zomby_Woof 4 года назад
@@Elosee depends on modrl and version. You are probably safe with the R720's, but I have some R210 ii's I use for low power/noise smb servers that no longer can be updated that way. It can be really annoying, but I usually have a windows server install on a small ssd in my bag, so I can just boot to that.

@Zomby_Woof
@Zomby_Woof 4 года назад
You may want to consider the R720 instead. Gen 1/2 e5-26xx processors have come down quite a bit, and if you're a performance geek at all, you get pcie 3.0. That becomes important if you are doing virtualization with a hyper converged San like starwind and need fast interconnects. 40g cards in pcie 2.0 will saturate the lanes of a single slot, whereas with pcie 3.0, you can get full bw with a dual port card. I need to upgrade for that reason. The Dell R720 is a good choice for trailing edge tech, as all slots are pcie. I only buy bare bones unless someone just happens to have exactly what I want. Replace all drives as a matter of course. The fans he mentioned can also be found for $60 or less as a whole NOS module with all fans and the carrier for drop in replacement. Replace the fans, the drives, and if you want to be extra sure, the fans in the power supplies, and you are back to full service life.

How many cams, and are you going to be outputting video directly from the box to a monitor? Driving the video will be the highest load on cpu, so scale up your cpu choice if you'll be driving a monitor full time. Any server side intelligence, like trip wires and motion detection will also make cpu load higher. That's one of the nice things about BI, is that it can add intelligence that the cams may not have on their own, but it comes at a cost in cpu cycles.

The main problem with servers is noise.You cannot use it in the same room.
@Zomby_Woof
@Zomby_Woof 4 года назад
There are things you can do to reduce the noise level quite a bit for a homelab situation. A lot of the noise is from air movement itself. I have a couple of short depth servers that I dremeled out the perforated exits and replaced with bar type grills from a couple of old power supplies. You *can* go with lower noise main fans, but that starts to get expensive. If you're doing all flash storage, that reduces heat load quite a bit.

For your idea on running on consumer hardware, sure it can be done but shouldn't unless you're in a jam. One phrase, "ECC RAM", matters for critical workloads more so that it does for consumer hardware. I agree when you have to scrap, sure, use consumer hardware, but if you have $$$ for consumer hardware you have money for a used server (with a warranty). Save My Server, Server Monkey, or other vendors that are all conveniently located within Spiceworks community should be your first stop. It's been like that for a decade or more. The reason is basically just like you mentioned, plenty of companies refresh servers yearly or bi-yearly, but the amount of servers they have vs the amount of desktops going through refreshes is vastly different. You will get charged an arm and a leg for a desktop vs a server. Always go server because the market is saturated with servers more so than desktops.
