Its a clever double meaning. Konrad(The projection in his mind) has 'always been upstairs', as in, always in his head. Konrad(The person) has 'always been upstairs', as in, he is long dead. 'Upstairs', in the sense of the afterlife.

It's an interesting parallel with Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now, and one last hint that Konrad isn't the Kurtz-like figure that Walker had needed him to be to make everything alright. Kurtz, in both Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, had left a letter for his next of kin with the protagonist to send back, where they attempt to explain and justify what they did, and why they did it. They had a conviction to them. Colonel Konrad; at least, the real one, has no justifications or explanations in his letter back home. Just an apology for what he's done.

Two points I've noticed: 1) You enter Konrad's room through a Zen Garden, typically representing tranquillity. So you are literally disturbing the peace. 2) When Konrad speaks but isn't in frame (visualised by Walker) Walker's lips move, he is quite literally talking to himself.

What I find the saddest is, if you look in the background after he shoots "Conrad", you can see rain clouds. So if the conflict had been avoided for just a day, they would have all survived. With the first rain in years, and the storm gone, they could have actually evacuated. But we had to be heroes, didnt we? Yet again, who knows, this could be another twisted trick in Walker's mind, so, even now, even subconciously, he still thinks of himself as the hero. Or, I guess you could say WE do. Denials one heck of a drug.

It took me 7 years to realize from Walker’s perspective the mirror is deciding who is responsible for everything that transpired, shooting himself or Konrad is obvious, but look closer where Konrad is aiming, he would shoot past Walker’s shoulder...and hit the Player’s camera angle. I think that by letting Konrad shoot Walker for you, you’re admitting you’re the one responsible for everything that went down in this game.
@LuckiSir
@LuckiSir 3 года назад
Also, whenever Walker would try to make an excuse, Konrad would talk to the Walker on *_our side_* of the mirror. The Player's side. But when Walker shows remorse saying *"I didn't mean to hurt anybody."* he turns his head to the one beside him. You're right, and it really shows how getting shot by him specifically would do that.

Konrad is a brilliant deconstruction of FPS War Game Antagonists. He’s this cruel, viscous, inane, and utterly evil bastard whose entirely responsible for every bad thing that happens in the game. And he’s a fiction. An invention of the protagonists to justify his actions. In that same respect the villains of most FPS War Games are fictions invented to justify war. To give the player an excuse to not think about what they’re doing and the implications of what’s happening in the game.

@@andyrodriguez4415 Another observation I made later is the eye contact in that scene. The only time Konrad turns to face your reflection instead of you is when Walker says to no one in particular: "I didn't mean to hurt anybody." This could be read as The player and walker being divided. The character of Walker didn't want to hurt anyone, but you sure did. The ending where Walker is shot by Falcon One, the conversation could be interpreted as a conversation between the characters of Walker and Konrad. "Going home" is also suggested as being analogous to no longer playing the game. "Even now, after all you've done, you can still go home. Lucky you." So with that in mind, that final conversation comes up; "Home? Men like us don't get to go home. If we're lucky, we do what's necessary, and then we die. No, all I want, Captain, is peace." That could also be framed as Konrad knowing that as characters in a game, they can never leave. At best, they do what they're destined to do in the game, and then it's over.

There was that interesting video essay series about the Heart of Darkness as a literary motif occurring in three literary mediums. In text as the eponymous Heart of Darkness, in film as Apocalypse Now and in game as Spec Ops: The Line. And each one brings something new to the table with their own specific style because of the advantages of each medium. The text of Heart of Darkness allows so much unspoken insight. The film of Apocalypse Now allows visual metaphor. The game of Spec:Ops The Line allows the blurring of the 4th wall. The narrative and responsibility bleeding into the meta narrative. Only a game could place the responsibility of such actions in the hands of the audience because it alone requires the audience to be party to it.

I like to think Walker surrendering is the canon ending. Not because Walker survives. It’s because Walker lives. Walker has done so much. And him surrendering is him coming to grasp with all he did. Accepting he had gone mad and is ready to leave Dubai. And it doesn’t give him closure. He’ll have to live knowing exactly everything he did was HIS fault, and HIS alone. The other endings either see him die or continue the lie. In this ending, he’ll live knowing the truth. And that is, at least to me, a worse fate than death. “Even now, after all you’ve done, you can still go home. Lucky you.” Lucky? I don’t think so. Edit: I understand that because the screen fades to white, it is not a "true" ending, hence why I specified "I like to think" at the beginning. It's not actually true what I'm saying, it's what I would like to be true, which is different.

It’s also a direct attack on the player. It’s a fourth wall break. In this universe, you’ve massacred civilians and murdered American soldiers. Their families are going to miss somebody dear in their lives. You’ve destroyed what little life is left in Dubai. But you’re just a player, this isn’t a real game. Walker goes home riddled with PTSD for the rest of his life, but you’ll just move on from this game and onto another. I was bored on a Saturday, wanted to pick a game where you shoot guns and don't think too much - Spec Ops was on sales on Steam. Ended up playing the entire game almost in a straight run and finished it at 3 AM. I was tired as hell but could not let go until it was done. I did not sleep a single minute after that. This is, to this day, the most powerful experience a video game put me through: you are wrong yet you deny it the entire time, you are given bad choices to make, you cannot win this game in any way and the game told you the very first minute that you should have not played it. You're supposed to go in, see if there are some survivors, "they send in the calvary, we go home". And this ending is a masterpiece but I love the dialog in the lift the most. "Do you feel like a hero yet?" is directly targeted to you as a player. And don't know how anyone can praise war after this, it's just messy torture that will break your mind permanently.

But they removed it because not only did too many play-testers instantly pick that option, but it kind of ruined their immersive "anti-war" experience by giving soldiers a choice in a situation where you're meant to have little to none, and they wanted as many people as possible to experience the whole game. Maybe it's in mine." and we then see him wearing Konrad's jacket at the very end. This makes me wonder if Konrad mismanaged the Damned 33rd all by himself and created Walker's squad as this sort of boogeyman that came through Dubai and wiped out all his soldiers - but Walker never existed, it was just Konrad trying to avoid responsibility for how things turned out.

Nah, shooting the imaginary Konrad is the best option. Shooting himself is too easy an escape for Walker, what really gives him a chance for redemption is shooting Konrad's reflection and ending the fantasy he created. Choosing to commit suicide is the same as the colonel chose, an easy way out of problems, on the other hand, ending the imaginary fantasy, and carrying the full weight of the actions that he committed, that is really the difficult way. Hence Walker's phrase "Stronger than you were"
@faffywhosmilesatdeath5953
@faffywhosmilesatdeath5953 2 года назад
@@kevinfloiger7197 first of all, let's avoid talking about suicide as "the easy way out" because it never is. Secondly, shooting Konrad's reflection is clearly shown to be Walker refusing to accept responsibility. Walker: "No, all this, it was *YOUR FAULT!"* Konrad: "If that's how you feel then shoot me!" Konrad exists as a fictitious antagonist that Walker blames in order to avoid coming to grips with what he's done. More to the point, both of them shoot themselves for the same reason: both have caused countless innocent people to die and there's no real way for them to make things right. It's not trying to get out of a problem, it's about realizing that they have caused irreparable harm to the world and feeling that they have no right to live after what they've done. It is, in effect, the same logic that justifies the use of the death penalty applied to the self. Ultimately, there is no chance for redemption because the Walker that survives doesn't believe that he did anything wrong. He goes on living, spending the rest of his life denying blame for the things he did in Dubai.

"I didn't mean to hurt anybody." This line hits so hard, because it manages to encapsulate Walker's realization in a single sentence. After he says this, it doesn't matter what choice Walker makes, because now he's already grasping the reality of what he's done. Walker went into Dubai thinking that he was going to be the next big war hero, that he was going to make everything right the way he saw it, but every single time he tried, things only got worse. Unnecessary amounts of soldiers, civilians, *people.* All of them died by his own arrogance and every time he went in further with even more recklessness, to the point where he was becoming less and less aware that he was constantly cutting down lives, even the ones he was supposed to save. And now that he was confronted by Konrad, who was finally hammering into him just how disgusting he was, Walker had a moment, no more gunfights, no more climatic helicopter battles, just him and his own thoughts, where he could finally take in what he's done, and it was *overwhelming.* He tried to blame Konrad, but the moment that fails, he suddenly becomes frightened, because now he understands that there was no one between him and his actions to blame, and his line and delivery is eerily similar to a child who had just made a big mistake, because it hurt him to acknowledge everything that bad.

The writers have actually hinted that Walker died in the helicopter crash at the beginning. When you first gain control of Walker it fades to white, meaning he’s hallucinating. You see Konrad’s face throughout the game, but don’t realize it since we don’t know what he looks like yet. Walker says “we’ve done this before” in the second helicopter scene, and afterwords you hallucinate again with Konrad saying “Welcome to hell”. This ending left a lasting impression on me when I was younger, it made me love psychological horror/thrillers. If the industry insists on making more war games they need to make it like this, as the game progresses the players feels the full effects of the horrors they experience and dish out. You can't just drive through an afghan city and just machine gun everything down without consequences. You can't blow up compounds cities and hospitals with an ac130 without consequences. All that fucked up shit manifests itself on the player model, just look at walker at the end, all torn up and bloody. He was like that in the beginning as well, the player just couldn't see it.

For my entire childhood I grew up in the physical shadow of West Point in the Hudson Valley. My father escaped drugs and gang violence by joining the Navy, but spent his entire life regretting getting out without using his benefits and technical experience from serving. I watched my parents grind their entire lives just to give us kids a chance. I watched my sisters get crushed the same way, only this time it was student loans and CC debt after 2008. I did it the “right” way. I talked to others who warned me against going infantry. I talked to people who told me “just because you disagree with the war doesn’t mean you can’t serve honorably. There’s no stopping the war, and you don’t want murderous psychoses doing it.” I had people tell “just do the single contract, get what you need, and leave.” 6 years. I was lucky even then. Just some dork working on computers. But the things I saw. Charismatic, god fearing leaders who would have their PROVABLE sexual assaults covered up. 19 year old kids pushed into situations that would kill them, either literally or through the stress. Families and marriages shatter into a million pieces just because some Colonel wanted an award. And the bombs. Every bomb we were part of dropping having footage, right there on the computer for us to watch like a reality TV show. How many more families did those destroy? I’m out now. I finally broke free of the temptation to take the blood money they offer you after you get out to be a contractor, which is itself endemic to the way this shit cloak and daggers your humanity without ever “forcing” you into anything. They always make it seem like the reasonable choice. The only reasonable choice is to never do it. But I didn’t make that choice. And now I get to go home and pretend I wasn’t part of it, or that it wasn’t my fault. It was just a paycheck and some free healthcare after all. Lucky me.

Since all of that, i could sort of tell when things were off and when Walker was hallucinating. But i never thought or knew that Walker died in that helicopter crash. I was around 10 when I played this and didn't really pay attention to the dialogue. At the end, I thought Walker did all of this because he hadn't had water in avery long time. I thought that was why he went insane, and why he hallucinated. Then, two years later, I picked up the game and played it again. I put everything together and read that Walker died in that helicopter. It was all his fault, and he didn't want to believe what he did was real.

What haunts me the most is realizing Konrad probably isn't talking to Walker but to the player directly. Lucky us.

...why do I find myself coming back to this game years later? Is it because it struck a special cord with me back then and I have a twisted feeling of nostalgia for this? Or is it because of the fact that over the years, I've changed a lot as a person like how Walker changed over the course of a single day? These are questions I don't have the answers to...and frankly, I don't know who does. I'm just some guy on the internet who leaves comments on videoes that range from wise, dumb, and sometimes sad. I'm nobody...and I'm fine with that. Better to be a good nobody than a bad somebody.

3:24 "Where is konrad? Where he's always been. upstairs. waiting for you." That delivery of that line hits so deep on many levels. i can't put into words how this scene makes me feel. but I'll try. Walker has put himself and his friends through the worst imaginable hell. he has fought tooth and nail and murdered his way throughout dubai. telling himself that he isn't to blame. and now everyone's dead. the 33rd, the civilians, his friends, the CIA. only he is left. he's exhausted, he has no energy left to fight. then in this brief moment, he begins to finally see reality.

They should redo spec ops with one added change if they could Certain collectibles you uncover should change the ending. Keep this ending for sure, it’s a masterpiece, my only gripe is Walker never had a choice really. On repeat play through s we could get a good ending. Certain pieces of intel shouid change how Walker perceives the situation. If the player knows the intel, so does Walker. Most players might get some but not enough intel on a first play through and get this ending. If you get most intel or at least the crucial ones. Maybe when the player starts talking to Konrad on the radio is a sign the player has gone insane so if that happens on your play through you know you’ve lost Walker. They did that in Silent Hill 2. The choices that affect the ending are small and very easy to miss.

Definitely would've appreciated the narrative even more these days playing through it for the first time but it still left an impression on me. Definitely agree with the comment someone else made about dying a little inside whenever I see the mirror get shot. I consider the ending to be the one where Waller counts to 5 and "commits suicide for you". That's ignoring the canon ending of Walker dying in the helicopter crash though.

I like to listen to games that have extensive dialogue like cod mw 2019 or spec ops and with spec ops something hit me on my second go. The 33rd weren't monsters because they just are they are a military without their leader and are trying to make due with what they have and that involves doing what some would say is reprehensible actions and this isn't a military only case it can happen to anyone. You will be forced to make decisions that will be evil. I recommend Bricky's video on Frost punk the last autumn. It has a similar meaning behind it.
