Special Forces Team Specialties | Former Green Beret
Please consider donating to the Green Beret Foundation for all they do for Special Operations veterans!
In this video we breakdown Operational Detachment Alpha specialties. Teams will have the same training and purpose as other ODA's 90 percent of the time. However, they have the added responsibility of training their infiltration platforms to remain proficient in case they are needed.
Almost time for the book to drop on February 23rd! Thank you guys so much for all of the support! Please like and subscribe it means a lot!

I had a guy that worked for me in construction that was in 82nd for 10 years. He was scared to death of being 15-25' feet up on a wall of a house. Absolutely terrified him, and wouldn't or couldn't do it. But had no problem jumping out of a plane at 250'. Of course you have a parachute on jumping and no safety net below on an outside wall of a house under construction. I get it.

My uncle served in the 5th Special Forces Group as a Special Forces Medic in Vietnam and Laos. I remember he used to tell me about some of the training he went through. I’m not sure if it still is true today, but back then SF medics were the only personnel other than actual surgeons to be permitted to perform surgery on the battlefield. He went through this final test where the instructors would take a goat, give it anesthetics, and then inflict a large amount of bodily trauma on it such as blunt force and shooting through the legs and stomach. They would then bring it out and whatever SF medic was testing would have to diagnose the injury’s and then keep it alive for 12 hours, after which they would inflict more trauma on it and then the medic would have to keep it alive for about 8 more hours.

I was selected by the 7SFG as "Soldier of the Year 1965." The winner received a gold SF ring and the choice of any school he wanted. My CSM was friends with the HALO CSM and there was an opening for the next class and he asked me if I wanted it. I told him I didn't think I had the "kahonies" to HALO into North Vietnam at night and told him they should select someone willing to do that. I took a lot of harassment for turning down the "elite" HALO school. Three years later, I was starting my 3rd Vietnam tour and was with MACVSOG-CCN. We needed a 7-man HALO team for a very dangerous mission in Laos. We could only find 3 volunteers. Back in the States HALO qualified walked around like princes profiling. We heard every excuse know to man why they couldn't volunteer. It wasn't until SMG Billy Waugh took over and "recruited" HALO qualified men that we got the team. My Point: Only take training you are willing to preform in combat!

It was always my impression that the MFF teams got their pick of personnel based on the fact that pretty much everyone wanted to go there for the "cool mguy" factor. I was MFF qualified, but I spent almost all of my time on a dive team. I did some climbing/mountaineering training, but I never was good at it. I didn't like it, and as short as I am, it was really difficult for me. I did think the teams in 10th group who did the skiing and snowmobile and snow cave stuff were interesting (even tho I would never want to do it). You should get a 10th group guy on here to talk about that stuff. Mob teams were huge in 5th group after the 1st gulf war, but every 5th group team that went to kuwait in the 90's (everyone pretty much went there every other year) got the full issue of GMV's, dirt bikes, crew served weapons, etc., and once afg kicked off, pretty much every team in SF became "mobility qualified", or at least did the mission. I loved being on a dive team. It was scary and very difficult. In my experience, divers tend to be pretty hard core in everything. People with "the bubble" tend to get more other schools that have nothing to do with diving (if they want them) like Ranger, SFARTEC, SFSC, etc. Its because the leadership knows that if you fail, it won't be because you are a pussy. If I had a non-dive qualed guy on my team, that guy wouldn't get any schools except things like bus driver and -2 until/unless he completed CDQC. I'll be fucked if I send a guy like that to JM or SFSC and he never graduates dive school and gets sent to another team- I just trained up someone else's guy and burned my team's slots to do it. Because I was a qualified diver, I was able to do over 12 years of ODA time. Being a diver makes you more difficult to replace on a team, so if you are a good team member, you will stay there for a LONG time, while people on other teams will be doing the revolving door thing, and end up on the B team, S3, etc. When I left a dive team (the first time, after 6 years) I didn't go to the B team- I went to the scuba locker, where I got more schools and continued to get dive pay, and train in the mission. Like a dive team, not just "anyone" can work at a scuba locker- you need to be dive qualified. Anyone can work at the B team, Bn schools, etc. When you do company deployments OCONUS, the dive team will often find themselves in a coastal area (jn other words, at the beach) teaching amphibious/waterborne ops to the HN forces, instead of living in a tent in the desert or in some crappy jungle or on a mountain top freezing your ass off with the rest of the company. I always advise new guys who are in shape and have the balls and commitment to tell the SGM they want to be a diver, and to be prepared to gut it out and put the work in with 100% commitment.

Case in point; SGM puts a brand new 18D from the 18X program in the Company Senior Medical slot. @darenkroon661

@@dallasyap3064 l personally never thought any of the moutain schools were hard. They were physically challenging but if you are in good enough shape to be on an A-team then you will be fine for the schools. Its been awhile so I don't really remember the attrition rate. I think it was that high. A couple issues that I witnessed people having was mountain land nav, knot tying. I never saw an SF soldier having a problem. It's like all the other schools. Know and understand what the standards are then meet and exceed them. If you have to stay up all night to practice knot tying, then do it. The schools I went through you didn't just tie the knot, you have to explain how you tie it. When you get to the schools they always tell you what is needed to pass. I had a lot of fun at the moutain schools. I was a cat 1 climber at 5th group. I was on 573 almost my intire time at group. I did a half of a year on 576 getting OJT before I went to the Q. I thought that all depends on what SF group u are in. I trained with 7th group guys, from Ft.Carson Co. This was at Ft.Polk La, and some of the guys I was talking 2, we're telling me how they would train on skies in Co. But like I said b4, the reason I didn't go 2 selection was because I was scared of the Land nav course, and tryn 2 learn a new language, does every SF guy have 2 learn languages, and isn't every group, 4 a certain area in the world, like 5th group was all over Afghanistan and Iraq.

If I’m not mistaken, there is still a 1st group TF (at least circa 2017 or 2018). You’re right about a paucity of missions for those guys though. If activated they would be onsite until the 500 lb gorilla could get there. 90% of their mission is fly always and training HN national assets.

After hostage acquisition, some team members have to dive to get to friendly ships docked off the coast while others wait with the hostage(s) for extraction by special warfare boat crews.
