3 is the bottom , 4 is the verical leg and 5 is the diagonal. Its the Pithageran therm ( not sure of the spelling) Tradesman's use thisnfor setting up the corners of walls, laying out flooring the old fashionway w/ out laser tools. Not many of the younger tradesman/ journeyman know theses simple tricks these days.

Almost 70 years ago, my dad, uncle, and grandfather were building the home I grew up in. The list of areas that my grandfather was expert in was extensive: mechanical, electrical, carpentry, even quoted Shakespeare and knew quite a bit of Latin. I was young (about 6), but he gave me a course on the carpentry square. There is more to a square than most know, it's not just for 90 degrees. I have his old square and many more tools,, they will be my son's soon.. He explained 3,4,5 to me, without getting into square roots.

How to derive the formula: Mirror the triangle on the vertical line, and you end up with an isosceles triangle, where all corners are 60 degrees, and all sides are same length. So the horizontal line of the original triangle is 1/2 in length, or in other words, hypotenuse is 2 times the horizontal line.. So using Pythagoras theorem to solve for Vertical line, we get square root of (2 squared - 1 squared), that is square root of (4 - 1), which is square root of 3.

An interesting line of approach. I assume that in the US it is taught that with a 30/60/90 the sides are given in that manner - x, 2x root3x ? While over here we teach the sin, cos tan of 0, 30, 45, 60,and 90 degrees and go on from there. Another puzzling thing is we write the constant first, so we would write root(3)x rather than like here - xroot(3)?

@@robertakerman3570 Please watch and read carefully. The other 2 angles are 30deg and 60deg. For a right-angle with sides equal to 3, 4 & 5 ratio, the 2 side angles do not equal to 30deg and 60deg. Let me illustrate below. Take an equilateral triangle of each side of 5 units length. All the internal angles are 60deg. Drop a perpendicular from any point to the opposite base. This perpendicular will bisect the triangle, the angle and the opposite side exactly in half. Now you have 2 mirror image right-angle triangles with hypotenuse equal to 5 unit length, the internal angles is equal to 30deg and the opposite side equal to 5/2 unit length. Now apply Pythagorean theorem to any of the right-angle triangle with 2 known lengths of 5 and 5/2 unit length. The square length of the perpendicular = (5^2 - 5/2^2) = (25 - 25/4) = {(100-25)/4} = 75/4 The length of the perpendicular = sq root 75/4 = sq root {(25 x 3)/4} = 5/2 sq root 3 or 2.5 sq root 3
