Thanks Alec Pierce! You are such a treasure for guys like me! I've been diving for 28 years, but I've just recently transitioned over to the professional side. I'm initially planning to do some independent instruction, but I'm an entrepreneur and I expect to open a dive shop in a few years. Being an engineer by trade with tons of mechanical experience, the knowledge you share in these videos is PERFECT for someone like me! I appreciate you!

Thank you Alec. I just serviced my conshelf 2nd stage and am about to service the 1st stage. I'll definitely buy the reassembly tool. Conshelfs are great regs. Too bad more people don't give them the love they deserve. I doubt I'll ever service a double hose reg but I was mesmerized watching you do it. Love your content. Please keep them coming.

So many find the insides of a double hose so mysterious. They are very simple and still work fine today if maintained well. You will love my Vintage Scuba playlist, lots of double hose models and info. Enjoy.

Hi Alec One trick I have used is the pencil held in a drill press and wind up the table .That little ring looks neat, I assume it is tapered on the inside to the inside diameter of the air input hole? to compress the C clip. The small ports are actually 3/8" fine not 5/16" there are some that also use a 7/16" size as well, I have a whole drawer of port adaptors that I have pulled off old regs. Always learn something from you, if only that there is someone else that does crazy projects just for fun! (your 6 tank setup) Stay safe Owen m

I had my regulator serviced and about 30 pieces, small springs and nuts came back in a plastic bag as old parts. Plus hoses were cleaned and tested. All good to leave it up to the pros! 😄

With each reg I serviced all replaced parts were put into a zip bag and returned to the customer. This shows the parts were replaced (o-rings, orifice filters, springs, even c-clips) and their condition. Most customers threw them away but some examined each to see what was wearing out and ask me questions on gear care. Glad your LDS does this too and thanks for watching.

Aloha Alec, seems to me connecting an IP gauge with an adapter to the hookah port will work on a DH regulator for setting the IP. I successfully checked my RAM IP at 110psi using this method.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 3 года назад
Absolutely works on a DH with a LP or hookah port. Saves a lot of time but if your servicing the DH do it from inside to verify the IP before reassembly. However for a quick check, works fine Art.

I have two bolts that I use for threading into the ports on the 1st stage. Have since I got started and figured why spend 70 bucks when I can do the same thing with 3 bucks worth of bolts. I took my 1st stage in to ace hardware and found which ones thread in correctly. I did splurge on the tool for the scubapro hoses which also helps split the 1st stage and the second stage orifice adjustment tool, plus the little O-ring guide tool. Rebuilt my old MK5 and 109 as well as a MK20 and G250 with my Gen 3 Air2. Have had tons of people complain that it's "life support" equipment and that I shouldn't be rebuilding stuff but I am sure that there are quite a few techs out there who honestly are not very good at their job or have bad days. I know when I am going to work on stuff I make sure that nothing else is on my mind. I got started diving after my wife passed away and have had bad days. Those are the days where I know I don't want to work on stuff like that. And to be honest it's a hydraulic system (yes air is considered a fluid so it is a hydraulic system) so you make sure it's clean, lubed correctly, and the O-rings are not damaged then when it's put together correctly it should work just fine.

Good points John and glad you're still diving after a personal tragedy. We probably grew up around the same time where if it broke, you fixed it because YOU COULD!. Parts and how-to manuals were everywhere from the 1950's to 1990's. Look for my Vintage Scuba video on Sears catalogs, parts for every car were sold plus animals and houses. Sadly the DIY mentality has greatly reduced as items can no longer be fixed, just replaced. Thanks for sharing your experiences and keep on diving John.

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Grew up doing a lot of stuff. Often had parts and a project vehicle handed to me and got told to go do stuff and I knew the consequences if I didn't which was basically you don't eat. Doesn't take long to learn some skills when your meal depends on it... Later on started watching repair people like a hawk even if it was for a neighbors place. Lets just say I had an offer accepted on a house recently and I bought the 200Amp shut off and 200Amp panel today and will at some point rewire the whole house. Also have to put a roof on it, build a bathroom upstairs and then rebuild the downstairs bathroom. Some mini splits for HVAC are on the menu after that. Then the back porch is a strip and replace. Eventually planning to build some better windows instead of the crappy aluminum ones that are there. While I am running the electrical I will run ethernet, coax, and some fiber optics. Doing all the work myself will save me about 30k in labor as well. Outside of not having some of the tools needed I am not a bit worried outside of wiring up from the existing meter to the 200Amp shut off. After that it's all easy. Got the house for a steal at 18K so I am more than happy to put some work into it.

So... You will need an IP guage, spanner(s), and appropriate torque wrench (inch pounds), minimally. You will eventually want a second stage inline adjusting tool. I have dedicated scuba tools that don't get greasy and dirty. I recommend nitrile gloves for putting cleaned parts back together. A good reference book(Regulator Savvy) in addition to shop manuals. Lastly, some training.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 3 года назад
Training and you got my crack about having a 2nd regulator while you work on the first. I don't advise divers to it but they should know something about what is involved in servicing. Many understand how to service disk brakes but don't do it. Thanks for watching Matt.

@jacquespoirier9071 3 года назад
@Fluffy Hamster what I fear is the irresponsability of the person that touch the regulator, for that reason I decided to perform the service myself probably that I take 3 times the time they take to do the job however, i'm sure of the result.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 3 года назад
It can be fun and very educational to DIY. However, many divers think they are 'competent' to service and either damager or worse, dive with defective gear. This was meant to show that its possible to service your own gear with some tools but mostly training and manuals. How many car drivers change their own brake pads or do oil changes today? Very few and yet as Fluffy says, not everyone does the job right, but there are a lot of them out there. Take care Jacques.

Really enjoy your series and tech tips , I just recently acquired a double hose aqua master from the 70s and would like to upgrade it so it can accommodate a phoenix valve. The problem is I can’t find a supplier seems that the vintage double hose website is not functional anymore . My diving experience is rather well rounded and enjoy diving in Lake Superior( yes the ole gitchi gummi) , including the icy months , any feedback and suggestion would be highly appreciated, keep the knowledge flowing !

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

Mr. Peirce, I have been enjoying watching many of your videos. I am considering getting a DA Aquamaster to rebuild. I might try to cobble together an IP gauge similar to the one you show in this video. As I do not yet have a DA Aquamaster, can you tell me what the thread size is on the second stage? Thanks for your help and keep up the good work. I have become a fan of your videos.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 2 года назад
The AquaMaster is a double hose regulator, there is no 2nd stage. Suggest watching S08E06 Diving A Vintage Regulator, showing how Kevin upgraded his 1975 Aqualung to modern performance and features. Should be lots to learn from this.

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Thanks for replying. I am new to double hose regulators so I may have used incorrect terms, but I am referring to the part you remove at 8:53 in this video so you can check the intermediate pressure. I thought that part was called the second stage. I am wanting to know what size the threads are where that part screws in because at about 10:45 you show your special pressure gauge that you use that screws into that orifice. I would like to put together an adapter so I could do the same check. I would like to upgrade an AquaMaster like in the video you referenced and know it is important to make sure the IP is at the correct pressure. I hope my reply makes more sense now. I have learned a lot from your videos.

@pacediver2594
@pacediver2594 3 года назад
That was very interesting,just a question ,if you wanted to just check your delivery pressure could you put a gauge on your hookah port to see if pressure is set properly?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 3 года назад
If you mean check the low pressure setting, a simple was is to plug in a pressure gauge with a QR fitting to the LPI hose. This gives the IP pressure for all hoses.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 2 года назад
Actually, you can see the IP (intermediate pressure) at the Hookah port. The problem with using the Hookah port is, if you want to adjust it, you must then disassemble the reg, put it back together,. check it at the port, disassemble it again to adjust it and so on. Pretty time-consuming. That simple IP gauge is much better. Alec

Hey Alec! James just called you out about Diaphragm Vs Piston costs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oesdyyo1fbk.html I suspect you might agree with his "neither" conclusion. One thing I did note was it may depend on WHERE you dive but hoe real is the possibility of free flow with a piston design. I think you may have an advantage on that question with your advanced "wisdom" and experience. I do wish you posted videos more often like he has been doing. I miss the corny jokes. Your channel is fun.

I like Divers Ready but I don't compete with any channel for subs, likes are sponsors. Kevin and I do this for fun, no ads, but we are 1 3/4 hours away so have to book shooting sessions. Also this little pandemic has cut me back to bi-weekly to minimize outside contact. When the world returns to a better normal we may get back to weekly releases.
