Specialized Butcher T7 - Awesome $50 tire with one major flaw

The Specialized Butcher T7 is a sub $50 dollar tire that definitely lived up to the hype! From hard pack single track, to the loose bumpy terrain at the downhill parks, these tires made me feel confident at speed. And on the slow speed tech lines that I love to ride, they gripped the rock better than any other tire I’ve used.
Specialized Butcher T7
www.specialized.com/us/en/but...
I was also pleased with how light these tires were. Not all weight on a bike can be calculated the same, and adding rolling weight is one of those things that can really impact your riding. All in all, these tires performed well in all conditions and exceeded my expectations.
However, during my testing I uncovered one major flaw. After 4 months, I was surprised to find multiple detached lugs and several more with serious tears exposing the threads underneath. Having lugs shear off like this in multiple spots is not only dangerous, but it also puts a definitive end to the life of the tire. So, squeezing a few extra miles out of this tire is certainly out of the question.
But I’m curious, have any of you experienced the same issue with the Butcher, or any other specialized tire? Let me know in the comments below.

I love the tread pattern on the butcher and the price … i thought overall shelf life was a little shorter than average but nothing dramatic like you experienced

Well, I guess I'm harsher than most when it comes to gear, lol. Having said that, I'm back on the Basanites for now.

Hi, I'm Jorge Mendes and I work for the Specialized tire team. Firstly I would like to apologize on behalf of Specialized for this failure occurred. As bicycle enthusiasts ourselves, we know well that a problem of this kind completely ruins the experience on the bike, an experience that should be a fun ride from the start. Secondly, we appreciate your sincere feedback regarding the performance and quality of our tires. Regarding this problem in specific: The “ripped” blocks from the tire “shoulder” are due to the lack of thickness of the rubber tread on the tire. Unfortunately, lack of thickness can happen when the extrusion process has not been controlled correctly. Rubber compounds, due to its intrinsic nature, are a highly volatile material and difficult to control during manufacturing and specially during the extrusion process. Especially soft compounds like T7 and T9. Our tire specifications are designed to absorb variations in the process. I am already investigating what could have gone wrong in the quality inspection process. Tires with this type of fault are under warranty and can be exchanged at the nearest Specialized retailer. Keep up the good work, Jorge

Thank you for the kind message and explanation Jorge. I was hoping it was just a bad batch, and it sounds like that could very well be the case. Perhaps I will give them another shot in the future at some point. I did like them overall. Sage

Just walked over to my bike with Butcher Grid Trail T7 has maybe 2 lugs with possible peeling starting. This is after 797 miles. Now, my rear(Specialized Eliminator Grid Trail T7) has about 10-15 lugs starting to peel a bit more. Ride typical midwest trails. Both bought at same time. But overall I have been very happy with performance for what I paid.

I've been using Butcher T9's since they came out, and worn out quite a few sets. I've never seen this issue on those. But I recently purchased a T7 for the rear wheel for dry weather, so will definitely keep an eye on that.

Always run butcher on the front run an elimination or purgatory on the rear! Been running the butcher T9 on front with an elimination T7/T9 on the rear and have been holding up great all season!

That's a good suggestion Chris. Unfortunately the T9 is priced at $75 (but you get what you pay for right?!) RU-vid budget is tight so I made the switch back to the Basanites.

I had the same with the Butcher 29/2.6 T9 but because i ride in terrain with lots of thorns, cacti and sharp rocks and these tires are always localy available (i live on a caribbean island) and kinda cheap i mounted them again but now T7 compound.

These come on the Turbo Levo, very sticky, with CushCore they have been bomb proof. Total weight with me on the bike is like 260lbs. I've noticed that I have to get up around 35-38lbs of pressure to keep them feeling nice and stable, and yes, that IS in addition to using CushCore. I've never seen the lugs tear and I ride a lot of rock and shale.

Where and what terrain you ride makes a huge difference. I had a minion dhr 2 maxterra shear off sideknobs after 300 miles. My butchers T7/9 are still holding strong after 600 miles and will probably last 800~1000 miles

I did the same thing to the side knobs on a couple Specialized Eliminator tires on the rear. Happened well before the tread was actually worn and I’m not the only one. Doesn’t seem to happen with their XC treads though.

I had the same happen to me at 300 miles with my Butcher. Specialized warrantied the tire and I got a new one. I got mine for $40 on sale and if the knobs shed at 300 miles I can go through two specialized tires for the price of one maxxis
@TrailSage

Ugh sorry to hear that Scott. And yes, excellent point! At that price just buy one good tire and be done with it, lol. Side note, I have had great success with the tires from American Classic. They are under the $50 price point and work just as well as the big tire brands.

Thanks for the great review Sage. Disappointed to hear about your experience with the side lugs as I was hoping the T7 casing would be the perfect blend of cost, grip and durability. I just threw on my Basonite Enduro that I bought after your review and unfortunately it has a pretty bad wobble right out of the gate, which seems to be not uncommon based on the Amazon reviews. I guess there's a reason these tires are at a lower price point. I'm really hoping to find that mystical unicorn tire so I can avoid paying Maxxis $100 a pop for tires that can potentially last a handful of rides if I encounter the wrong sharp rock lol
@TrailSage
@TrailSage 10 месяцев назад
Yeah I was pretty disappointed too. Someone else commented that the T9 held up better so you may want to try that option. Regarding the Basanites that is a total bummer, I'm so sorry Sam. I have the Trail version, not sure if the Enduro is different. LMK if you find that mystical unicorn tire.

@@TrailSage I have some friends that swear by the T9 Gravity Casing, but those aren't as cheap and I imagine are heavier than you want for a trail oriented rig...it's quite a conundrum. Maybe Delium tires will be the next one to try in the $50 range...I've heard some good things about those.

I was running a t7 but her front and t7 eliminator rear... ripped side lugs on both. I recently picked up a speccy status which comes with t9 buthers front and rear, and the t9 version seems to not have issues. I should also note, I ride in Tucson... my terrain likes to destroy tires

I had two of the Butcher T9 Grid Gravity 29 x 2.6 (current branding but maybe a batch from 2021/22) have splitting of the center knobs while still almost-new. At first I thought they were sipes opening up but the tread was actually cleaving apart. Shop gave me a 3rd for free after the first two did this to me within the first 4-5 rides but I'm concerned they may have batch to batch quality issues (?) I ended up getting a Vittoria Mazza instead which has performed well. The replacement Butcher is still sitting in a box until one of my other tires wears out. I like how inexpensive they are, but I wonder if the quality control isn't quite at the level of some of their competitors.

I wonder if they would be able to extend the life of these tires by doing what Schwalbe did with their Hans Dampf tire that had a similar issue. On the updated tire, they had reinforced the side knobs by adding more material that extended down a bit further towards the sidewall.

@TrailSage 10 месяцев назад
