Everytime I hear Sil in her alien form screaming in pain when she gives birth, she sounds like a gremlin from the Gremlins movies. Funnily enough, Frank Welker who did the voices and sounds of the gremlins also did the sounds for Sil.
I actually love this film, still watch it quite often. As a teenager this was a 10/10, 7/10 for the film itself and another 3 points for 2 specific things: 1) Natasha Henstridge (especially when she dies her hair black) 2) Forest Whitaker's character unironically stating the complete obvious, constantly, due to his 'empath' abilities. Seriously, this had me laughing my ass off every time.
Same here man! Even though ultra violence wasn't something that phased me much the mix of sex _and_ violence in this first movie disturbed the fuck out of ten year old me watching HBO late at night when I know I shouldn't have been! Although 2 and 3 up'd the schlock and aren't quite as raw about it, in hindsight as an adult _Species_ premise is ridiculous. Now _Splice_ was similar to me...but that movie is just plain uncomfortable (I love it!)
"He's about to meet her cat." That was the funniest line for me. (Out of many!) I remember this movie, unfortunately. Your review made the memory much more bearable.
The movie was released just one month away to her 21 birthday... To this day, i'm still curious if that's not considered a kind of abuse of "minors" in the USA (i'm not sure if it's 18 or 21 the age when a person is considered mature in that country)
Your channel definitely needs more subs, it´s one of the best movie review channel of youtube. And i love that you take a look at all this obscure (or not so mainstream) films.
He does a great service imo. Some of us moviegoers are always curious about some of the obscure/horrifying/controversial movies but at the same time don't wanna be scared for life by, for example, the Human Centipede or summin.
Wait.... I was noticed??? That's a first ever on my RU-vid life, see I told you, you seriously deserve more recognition But in all seriousness I really like your style of reviewing and the fact that you somehow manage to give this movies a serious and clearly though critic Without ever taking away the humor inherent to such a ridiculous plots (I'm looking at you "Human Centipide). Making them both funny and educational at the same time..... HOW ITS THAT POSIBLE?? We are talking the human centipide here. THE HUMAN CENTIPIDE One more thing I want to commend you for is that for the perspective of a non-natural English speaker, your videos and comments are very easy to follow, you don't use overlly convoluted or technical terminology, and I want to thank you for that I know this comment it's really long so I just want to say Keep the good work. From a viewer of South America I apologize for my English. I'm still learning
When I was 7, I was left alone in lounge room while everyone else was asleep. I didn’t know how to use the remote or the buttons on the side of TV, so I just left it on the same channel my mum was watching before (which was featuring normal things on there before). Then this came on. The first few minutes (before any of the porny or gruesome stuff) I started to feel uncomfortable, so I went to bed and asked my Mum to turn it off for me. Now years later, I know that if I had not had an uneasy feeling, I would have been exposed to guts and porn at age 7. So yeah, dodged a bullet there. 👍
I loved this movie. I waited expecting to see the action figures of Sil in all her forms to be made. but sadly no. Perhaps someday a Species 'universe' will be formed.
Sending dna as info in a data stream is actually feasible. Combining the components to create life is the problem for us with our current stage of biotechnology.
Ayyyye this movie has a special place in my heart. A very campy special place. And Sil being the main character is mostly what contributes to that. Badass alien chicks can step all over me tbqh
I saw someone review tattoos and some chick had the human centipede, tattooed on her chest. I had no clue what that meant. Sort of but I had no idea it was a movie. So that’s how I found him. His dry humor is refreshing. He is pretty good...
YT algorithm brought me here. I enjoyed the scent of cheese coming off of this movie since back in the day. But your sass adds another flavor to this alien rom-com. Thank you for making me bark out a few good laughs today! Keep spreading joy to the masses 👽
Hell yeah, I loved this movie mainly because it was so weird and weird, I especially recognised the H.R. Gyger train when I watched it recently, it's just such a movie where I have to watch it every year at bare minimum. Great review as always mate.
The assembly of the team in this movie is like a heist film. I really liked the combination of the team. That part of the movie really worked for me. The concept of the SETI Invasion was brainy for then. This is a high concept film, that was quite the sleeper. I worked at a video store, it flew off the shelf, for quite a long time. I mean so did Color Of Night, but Species was worthy of the attention.
I've said it before and I'll gladly say it again. You're a genius! Certainly one of the most entertaining reviewers on the net, hands down. Can't wait for more!
What the heck i just realised i wasnt subbed to you, that travesty has been remedied 🐝thx for the heart i forgot to mention on yer review on antichrist, yer wife sounds awesome finishing that film before you she sounds like amazing. Couple goals lol. Love fae bonnie scotland
This review makes me want to watch the movie but not because of the movie itself but because of the cinematography. On the other hand, this reinforced what I felt about the movie from seeing the commercials and that was that it doesn't seem to have a point. Like it seems like it should be something more than the straightforward narrative that it presents. It has the potential to go into so many spaces yet it ignores it all. It's weird. Anyways, thanks for the video!
I love your videos man I’ve been binge watching them from last night. Your comedy is just awesome and the breakdown is entertaining. immediately subscribed.
Great review as usual. You basically have the job I used to dream of - watching trashy horror B-movies and getting paid to review them. Lol. Species is the kind of movie the major studios used to be good at churning out. Taking “B” concepts and loading them with talented actors and directors to make solid fun entertainment. I mean c’mon, If you can’t enjoy watching this then you really are not a fan of B movies. It’s got monsters, sex, violence, and dark humor. It’s not supposed to Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy. It’s about a hot horny alien! Love your channel. You rock!
Forest Whitaker's character Smithson, or as I call him...Captain Obvious, has to be the most useless character in this movie. The best example of this is when the team first enters the train compartment with the dead conductor and the cocoon and Smithson says "Something bad happened here." Really? No shit, Sherlock, welcome to the team!
I saw both this movie and its sequel in a movie theatre. I thought they were both fun sci fi horror movies. Not a real classic like Alien or The Thing, but entertaining.
Now I when I see the review I realize this does have a pretty interesting support cast led by none other than Ben Kingsley who played Gandhi, but Molina, Whittaker, and Madsen. And all of them went to do better movies later on. Not to mention Henstridge. So this movie worked for everybody quite well except Kingsley. What prompted him to take up the role ?
