I'm a pianist/singer and became homeless after my divorce. I would listen to Dianna and she gave me that drive to want to pick up the piano and just play. Thank you Diana Krall
I know!! She puts all these one dimensional Instagram model types to shame. It’s sad that women don’t wanna be more like her instead of say the Kardashians.
It was an honor and a great joy for me to do some work for Diana Krall years ago in NYC. She is a charming, humble, delightful human being and she was so kind to me. I have never been one to take advantage of contact information for celebrity clients but I regret losing contact with her. She deserves all of the accolades for her talent and dedication to music and much more for the wonderful person she is.
I was honored and had the privilege to have been invited at a Diana’s concert at the Royal Albert Hall in a private box , what a moment i lived during that time ! Love from the paradise island of Mauritius 🇲🇺
No transition from talking to singing she found her authentic voice. That's amazing and I admirer her even more. One of the finest women on the planet.
There’s lovely jazz and that stupid jazz that is shrill and just goes on forever with music I can’t follow - no tune , just random twilling. My terminology
Music was ALWAYS there...like Electricity...we, humans just have to tap into it...i.e. Humans did not come up with music..just manifested it..from the Vibrations of the Universe..
I love to sing jazz. I began with the ladies who sang jazz and other singers. I began including "When I fall in love by Nat King Cole". I Was 15 years old when I began. I was fearless. Then the incorporation or inclusion of many pop songs is so too?. Too great! A lot to love. They were always of such a high standard.. I suffer a bit from stage fright, why did this happen ? From fearless to Sfrite ....... Elton has changed his singing ve a lot. It's very much more musical, and mature . Lovely. Thanks to all.
Love that Diana has such respect for Nat Cole and Elton and also for the aunt who was in vaudeville. Good people cherish what came before them, no matter how much they themselves achieve. 💜
We were staying at the Royalton hotel in NYC in the 90’s and happened to peek into the Algonquin Hotel where Diana was performing. Blown away! Have been a huge fan ever since!!
I was already a fan of Diana Krall, but now, so much more so. She is so down to earth, so natural , so humble, so unpretentious and unassuming. And her music ... just beautiful!
If she were not white and blonde she would be just an average jazz performer. Don't get me wrong, she is good, but nowhere near the reputation that she enjoys.
NYCBG. That sounds a tad racist, at best it’s a low brow ad hominem critique. If the intent is to discredit, why not focus on technical shortcomings, vocal range, stage presence or the usual musical components that are fair game and subject to musical analysis: concept, behavior and sound? But, White and blonde? Yikes . . .
(i'll come back to clean up edit) Exactly. Remarkably talented and skilled as a musician and vocalist, yet bashful, humble, and unpretentious about the massive amount of talent, followers, fans, , yet almost bashful a very accessible humble and unpretentious, and atg. And her music ... just beautiful!i have loved her creative talents have had me under her spell since discvering her music at the listening sttions at Tower Records and Virgin Megastore her in l=Los Angeles her 90s CDs. i've never seen an interview. this made my heart swell with such love and admiration and respect for her. And Elton! The joy he radiates by asking hs friend about how she got to now, and the joy he radiates in his segment of the 2015 Tower Records doc All Things Must Pass, make me want to contact him to say how beautiful that energy felt to watch, also filling my heart. Really a great show, accidentally arrived here and first learning about the series! I am so f%^&ing happy for/ proud of/ impressed by the friend and showrunner, Mr. Alex Coletti, an awesome human being, a friend that I met while we were MTV colleagues a generation ago, in a galaxy long ago and so f%^&*ng far, far away. Like, farther than Narnia.
I ADORE Diana Krall & her incomparable piano & vocal gifts. But my favorite part of this was her storytelling; learning about her, her experiences, the masterful artists... some she's known & loved personally... who've influenced her music AND her life. I'm SO grateful that I saw this video! BRAVO MS. KRALL!!! ENCORE! ENCORE!! ENCORE!!!🙏💕🇺🇲✌
This might be my favorite video on the entire RU-vid. This is definitely the best I've ever seen Elton John perform. And thank you so much Elton for putting Diana upstage and keeping her there.
This is the best 27 minutes I have enjoyed in a LONG TIME....Diana is LOVELY ......TALENTED.....CHARMING.....SO GREAT TO HEAR AND LISTEN TO......ADD ELTON JOHN and you have MAGIC
She made me cry, she made me smile. I could feel the love, I could feel the passion. What a wonderful presentation of music masters at the top of their game.
The pure modesty that exonerates from such a truly gifted person talking about herself just overwhelms me! Thankyou for all the wonderful moments in my life that you have inspired Diana!
What a joy to listen to such a talented, sensitive, inquisitive and intelligent artist. Diana Krall is creme de la creme. Excellent interview by Elton John who is so remarkable in his own right. Thanks.
This is a kind of music that I do not listen to very often and know very little about it but who could not be entranced by the delicate precision, the truthful tone and the elegance. Absolutely wonderful.
I saw Elvis Costello live in the early 1980's. He sounded so good and his band was so tight. He is such a great songwriter. I played piano, but i wasn't very good. I saw Diana Krall on Canadian television around the year 2000, and I was so taken with her I began practicing every day, sometimes for more than 2 hours. I am still enthralled with her today, and I owe my much improved piano ability to my crush on Diana Krall.
Piano is the hardest instrument to learn, guitar came naturally to me,when I dedicated to learn piano,I thought I’m in for the long haul on this one, years into it and I still got a long way to go.
Elvis Costello is not a good player nor a good singer. He just leaches next to good players and singers. He is just not talented and just happened to be lucky.
I gotta tell ya about my homey, Rick Nielsen: In Madison, Wisconsin (year?), he introduced the crowd at a local venue to Elvis C. The two have been friends ever since.
Too Rolling Stoned : With all due respect, I think you miss the point. Whether Costello wrote some songs or stole those songs from someone it is not important. Un like many writers which write and stay out of the stage lights, Costello feels the need to torture us with his lack of singing talent and lack of charisma. He’s sure not Presley, that’s for sure. Many of us know that and wish he’d stay off stage and save our hearing. Diana Krall his own wife refuses to record with this loser.
Diana Krall is my husband's favourite person in the world and I can't say I blame him! We've seen her live several times and it is indeed a treat! Also, first heard her on Vicki Gabereau's show on CBC waaaaay back in the day and she hasn't she hasn't changed a bit. Canada loves you Diana!!!
Bloody brilliant! How is she not so much bigger! Our culture sucks.....She is one of the most impressive artists I've seen live or on screen. You god Girl!
@@crex1074 Listen. Being big and selling millions of records is nice. BUT it's not the measure of greatness. The measure of greatness is determined by the body of work you left behind in the recording studio. And if that body of work is critically acclaimed? It doesn't matter if you sold zero records. Understand? Sometimes, you get rare artists who sell a billion records AND have a critically acclaimed body of work as well. But that's a very very elite class of artistry. To have BOTH record sales AND a critically acclaimed body of studio recordings. It's a very very elite group.
I use to work at the same hotel in Boston with Diana . Use to have dinner together in the employee cafeteria many an evening . One night we rode the elevator together and she said to me that it was a pleasure having worked together but she was leaving the lounge . She found a new manager who want to help her career and cut her a CD ... i said well, good luck with your new adventure Diana ... then in no time she became a super star ! From free concerts twice a week in the lounge to concerts i could not afford the price of a ticket .... GOOD JOB OLE GAL !
@@NYCBG He said he used to know her back in the day and wished her well then, and even more so now. Nothing wrong with that. find something else to do.
elton john is soo multitalented. man is one of the best musical composers. one of the best baritone voices in the business, is very humorous, is a fashion icon, has helped in saving millions of lives, very generous and is the greatest musician interviewer. elton is so quick and observant. he brings out the best from diana. he is just wonderful and a universal gift
Being a long time fan of all 3, this was really special to behold! I have a few related bits; A few years back, we caught her live in Raincouver, with great, row 2, floor seats. Her set was more pop based, putting her own jazzy stamp on them...cool, nonetheless. I swear the mother/daughter pair in the front row/center, were family, based on their blond hair and likenesses. Before the show, I was checking out the Steinway piano and noticed a small figurine on the near side edge of the keyboard...it was a mini-Elvis! A former co-worker of mine was also from Nanaimo and went to school with Diana. He said her brother was the funniest guy he'd ever met. My cousin was once returning on a flight from New York and sat across from both Diana and her younger sister. While Diana kept to herself, her more attractive sister was quite engaging. Apparently, they were returning from the Grammys. A musician friend of mine, once got an unexpected phone call from Elvis Costello...he wanted him to repair an amplifier at their home. He arrives at the door, only to be greeted by both Elvis and Diana! The only time I've seen Elvis live was during our local jazz festival, when he shared the stage with the great, Allen Toussaint...such an amazing night! Unfortunately, I've never seen Sir Elton live, the '70's woulda been my choice. A few years before he passed, I got to see the legendary, Oscar Petterson...his absolute command of the keyboard was staggering, even at that age!
Wow. Just Wow. I've heard her in passing a few times and never paid enough attention. What an incredible talent. Her voice is sublime. And Sir Elton is a true gentleman. Well done.
I was listening to Diana Krall in the mid nineties and saw her in concert a few times She is a fellow Canadian and raised in Nanaimo BC Her lastest album " Turn up the quiet " is in my opinion her best yet!!
I have admired Mrs Kralls work for so long.. I was dating an Italian girl when SInatra died.. She said we had to listen to nothing but him for 3 days. I told her I didn't know any of his music.. We drove from the middle of NC to the coast and I knew the words to every song.. I can thank Diana for much of that - her incredible renditions breathed life back onto classics to be enjoyed by future generations... After all these years your Live in Paris CD is played at least weekly in my house.. Thank you so much for the light you bring!!!
It's having your own intimate party with your favourite friends and just chilling out . Boy do we need lots of this at the moment! Golly , this is just so lush! Lovely! Thankyou very much. Take care and stay safe.
@@bradhuskers Diana Krall would slap you for such insolence and agree with me that Elton was a great vocalist. Sounds like you are ignorant about him; listen to his albums "Madman across the water" or "Goodbye yellow brick road" all the way through or see the video "Elton - Isolated vocals in a bar setting."
@@DexterHaven Again. I've studied music longer than you've been alive. Elton John is not a great vocalist. To low IQ types maybe. Same with Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Mediocre vocalists at best. Get educated
@@bradhuskers Shut up, you just proved yourself to be a pompous, rude, pretentious, egotistical boor. You embarrassed yourself. In all your years, you still haven't learned how to comment.
This is an amazing interview with 2 of the most talented and wonderful pianists of our age. So fun to learning about Diana and her evolution as an artist.
Bloody gorgeous music, brilliant interview and wonderful respect between two absolute legends. Absolutely loved the duet and Elton clearly buzzing at Diana’s superb interpretation. Talent speaks for itself.
Growing up on our 'wet coast' and being schooled by amazing talents in the art of great music has molded Diana into this diamond of a musical entertainer/genius. I could drink a case of this and still be wanting more....oh Canada! #proudCanadian cheers to all 5 of you. Well done! 🍻
It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten when I first heard Diana sing & play but I will never forget her. The way she arranges her lyrics, the changes her voice makes as the lyrics tell the story of her song, is so definable that one wonders why they never before recognized more than the melody. She’s the absolute best at her craft, and it is indeed a craft that the listener hears & waits on the next line of that soft breathy voice to give us more.
Well Elton at first I thought it was kind of amusing. You wouldn't exaggerate would you? Not that anyone would believe it. I'm thinking that now might be a good time to concentrate on gracefulness.
I was at the honolulu show with Elton. On the same night Diana was playing at an adjacent concert hall. A friend of mine went to Diana’s concert and said she started to play Bennie and the jets as a tribute to Elton that brought the house down. Too bad they were performing on the same night, but I did get to see Diana play at the Waikiki shell a few years later and she was incredible. It started to rain and people were using their umbrellas which blocked the view of others who were yelling for them to put the umbrellas down. Diana very smoothly said that’s the name of my next new song “umbrellas down” and started to play an impromptu song that was made up on the spot and showed what an amazing musician she is. Unforgettable evening
I feel privileged to have seen Diana many years ago at Ronnie Scott's (Soho). A memorizing evening, and you could hear a pin drop between her breathe and the notes. Such a great night. Thank you Ms Krall. (and for playing Israel to and you to Elton x).
I loe the breath and space she gives to the music. There's plenty of room between the notes. She doesn't feel compelled to fill every nook and cranny with sound.
Diana is so magnificent, such a talent. It makes you tear up just in awe of someone on her level of ability. That face. That voice. Those hands. One of a kind.
Diana is one of my favorite players and singers. Her trios are always exceptional, but this with E.J. is simply great! I had the great pleasure of getting to know her through the (Jimmy and Stacy) Rowles family, some great musical minds there!
Diana and Elton touched on a little known fact. Some of the greatest artists in music history, didn't write lyrics. Anyone who doesn't understand this reality, is a low IQ weak minded sheep. I'm thrilled that they shared that pearl of wisdom.
After growing up on Julie London I totally get Dianas singing. It was something I couldn't touch but knew it from somewhere. Fabulous connection to the past. Keeping the legacy - so good Diana!
This is by favorite video! Elton is great 👍🏼 and SO good at tuning into her essence. I had no idea 🤷. She’s a wonderful talent. They are obviously good friends …and to sing together is a treat of my lifetime. Made my day! Thank you 🙏🏽 from my heart ❤️ of hearts.
THAT, boys and girls, is what quality music sounds like, coming from stunning, talented performers. Pattern yourselves after these people...not the schlock we seem to be bombarded with.
So cool, thank you. So great to see the 'real', so relaxed & open ELTON JOHN. How great she was, in this interview, and how great HE was in this interview! Great!
Love her! Had the honour to see her a few times in concerts including at the Montreal Jazz festival and Elvis came out and they did a number together! Very very nice! She’s. So talented , beautiful and humble also!
Mrs. Krall has been among my favorites since I was quite young. I came across one of CDs used and bought it because of the cover. I had no idea what I was about to experience. Have loved her ever since.
Diana Krall is amazing. Not just her music, but as a person. Back in 2012, for my husband on our last anniversary together, I took him to see Diana in concert at the Hollywood Bowl. And I had contacted her fan club (which, I believe her sister runs) asking if it was possible to meet her after the concert. My husband passed away in May 2013 (Glioblastoma). She was very gracious and posed for a picture with my husband. I'll never forget the smile on his face after we left. Not long after that, I sent her a thank you card, hopefully she received it.
It's very telling when Elton mentions his encounter with Oscar Peterson. His shyness to greet this man is a form of humility mixed with grace, really. To let one of such grand stature just be in their world but also wanting to connect and feeling somewhat inadequate is a funny thing. And in Elton's case it was bittersweet. And I'm sure he's replayed that encounter and had a million conversations in his head, if he'd had a second chance. I get it, been there a few times.
That has immediately become my favourite version of Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word - Elton seemed to channel the vocals of Ray Charles and Joe Cocker as well as allow the talent of Diana Krall shine. Truly fantastic performance.
Damn I love her tone. My Dad who is now 87 introduced me to Krall. He also said I need to listen to Michael Bubbles (Buble'). Michael had just started charting.
