Great to see an excellent teacher working with some obviously interested students. What a good educational environment looks like. Did this old retired mechanical engineer's heart good over coffee. Back in the mid 1960s my one brother in law had just got out of the Army and worked as a brake man on the 'connector' railroad in Pittsburgh. They spotted the cars under the blast furnaces and pulled the molten iron out. Having no seniority he worked 3d shift. Has good stories about doing this on an industrial scale - wish I could have seen it in person. A bygone era now.

Hi Mr. Pete, this reminded me when I was in high school metal shop, my shop teacher liked my friend and I because we always tried to work out different ways to do things. One day while everyone else was pouring the standard aluminum mold my friend and I asked if we could try to pour a brass mold and the teacher thought it would be a great idea for the class to see since it was not part of the normal class. When he came in with several pop bottles we were a bit surprised but soon remembered brass POPs when it first turns liquid so the glass was there to act as a lid until the brass became molten. The mild turned out great and of course the other guys wanted to try the brass for themselves. Thanks great video and memory too.

Gotta be careful when melting on concrete. I set up a small furnace once on a concrete patio. Apparently there was moisture in the concrete. After about 10 minutes of intense heat the concrete exploded. It was an explosion equivalent to a cherry bomb or m-80 firework. The moisture in the concrete heated and built up enough pressure to explode a basketball sized pock mark on the patio. Several days later I was working on the roof of my two story house and found pieces of concrete on the roof! Probably best to pour in a container elevated above the concrete. I had heard of this happening before but just said aw-bullsh**. I don't say that anymore!

Closest I had was manual drafting courses because the school couldn't afford new computers and software for the computer drafting or CAD stuff. I never did well in school, but after school went into the shop area to use tools (with teachers permission) I knew I liked it but working with your hands is frowned upon for some reason.

@@mrpete222 on the contrary my friend. if you have ever seen someone burned by even just the smallest splash of molten metal, you might have a different opinion on safety. its horrifying. and those green "welding jackets" ignite like a match. you would think as welding PPE, they wouldn't be so flammable. we were smelting aluminum at a salvage yard in Hartford, SD about 25 years ago. the kid we had working in the shop, welding, answering phones, a runner you know? he came over close to the smelter to tell the owner he had a phone call and the pot was just coming back down from being emptied and a splash of aluminum hit his shoulder and by the time we noticed it he was 10 feet away, engulfed in flames, wearing on of those green fucken welding jackets...............he didn't make it. he died a week later in the hospital with burns covering 50% of his body. just something to keep in mind when working under such dangerous conditions.
