Overcrowding is common, I think, on those long distance services, especially when they put a 2-car 150 on. The train I expect should have been used failed in service the previous day

Great video with plenty of steam Les! The unplanned stop, gave you a lot of extra great footage. Annoying when the unexpected whistle makes the camera jump though? done that many times😂

Thanks Phil. In fact the whistle occurred whilst I was changing position a few feet to the left to try and avoid a totally head-on view.

I didnt think the diesel was doing that much as there was no obvious slipping at the front. However its always hard to tell.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways I'd guess that it was because the 47 was pushing hard that it prevented slipping by 44871 at the front. Still very atmospheric.

I wonder how the 47 driver is supposed to drive, is he in radio communication with the 5 ? Does he only go up to, say notch 2 to just give the right amount of help? Or may be aims for a steady Amperage to the traction motors.

As far as I know, the rear driver will know/'sign' the locomotive and the route. They used to use whistle/horn but now use radios. They have to include how they operate in their 'Safety Case'. Unless someone knows better. @@Martindyna

Great Video Leslie, you must have been up early to get to Panteg for that time in the morning. I used to live near Maindee Junction on the North and West route.

I got there for 8:15 - the train was due at Cwmbran for a stop at 8:37. So the sun was low and the steam rising from the insulation plant was rising high so gave an indication of what would hopefully come. Just never expected it to be there so long

I do have a tripod but the location on that footbridge rather precluded its use. I'd expected to be there for maybe 2 minutes at most for the steam sequence, possibly leaning against a wall but another RU-vidr was recording from that position. Thanks for watching.
