I get a lot of questions about the different preamps in my Spector basses so I thought I'd do a quick comparison.
The following basses are used:
2015 NS-2 with original US Haz preamp (amber burst)
2014 Euro-4LX with TonePump preamp (black)
1986 NS-2A with Korean Haz preamp (white)
All basses are equipped with the standard active EMG PJ set.
Example 1: Pick groove, both pickups on, bass and treble full
Example 2: Fingerstyle groove, neck pickup only, bass and treble full
Example 3: Fingerstyle groove, bridge pickup only, bass and treble full
All examples are played straight into the interface, no effects or plugins are used.

I love the flavor that miniscule amount of buzz brings to the table. It's virtually impossible to rank these from best to worst. I hear clear differences between them but couldn't choose a winner. This video is definitely a resource for all people interested in different Spector sounds. -pac

I feel NS-2A sound is similar to EURO, I prefer NS-2, though I own a euro 4. the maple fingerboard version is cool, the sound is punchy and powerful, and more detail than the other two

Hi Brent! Congrats to your new bass - you can’t go wrong with a Spector! Yes, the Euro has a dirtier tone, the NS-2 is more hifi. Both are great.

What fingerboard woods are on the Euro and NS-2A? I sounded to me like the mids were much more present on the NS-2 and I am tempted to chalk it up more to the maple 'board most of all, assuming the other 2 are ebony. However I can imagine the NS-2A might be rosewood. I have a Euro LT5 that sounds much more like your NS-2. It's got a maple board, but a 35" scale is probably also helping bring out the mids.

The HAZ preamp has more a "bright" sound. The tonepump is more mellow. I think that's the main difference. The HAZ tends to be more superior IMO. But Instill like the Tonepump on my Euro 4 LX Black Cherry😍
@lf170
@lf170 3 года назад
All three sound good. The NS2 has the most refined sound, but I am surprised at how close the Euro gets, aside from the much higher treble range. I bet with the treble turned down to flat, it would get even closer to the HAZ. The KHAZ gets closer to the HAZ but seems to lack a tiny bit of liveliness or bite. Are the strings the same on all three? I wonder how much of the Euro's zingy top end has to do with the Tonepump, or if it has a brand new set of strings compared to the others. Are they all using the same gauge and brand of strings? Also, the Euro sounded the loudest - how do you have the internal trim pot set?
@Bassman-dk9yc
@Bassman-dk9yc 3 года назад
No, there are different kind of strings on them. All sets are 45 - 105, but the NS-2 has DR Lo Riders, the Euro has Markbass Steels and the NS-2A has D‘Addario Pro Steels. Only thing in common is that all the strings are played relatively the same amount of time and they‘re all steel strings. The TonePump indeed produces a more aggressive and present high end. I tried to set the trim pot at matching level to my NS-2 and once got confirmed by a sound guy that they’re pretty close.
@lf170
@lf170 3 года назад
@@Bassman-dk9yc That makes sense. I have a few Euros and the TP seems to sound best with the Bartolini pickups due to those being a little mellower than EMGs. But that HAZ sounds perfect.
@Bassman-dk9yc
@Bassman-dk9yc 3 года назад
@@lf170 The HAZ is a great pre but I’m also a huge fan of the TP although it gets a lot of negativity by some players. I haven’t tried the LT Euros with the Bartolinis but I’m a EMG fan all the way.

@@Bassman-dk9yc Thanks for posting this! I’m impressed with each bass that you played. To my ears, each bass sounded great, and there was only a subtle difference in tone between the 3. They all sounded like Spectors to me! I was also happy to hear that you Euro held it’s own! I own two Czech-made Spector neck throughs, and I like them a lot. I briefly owned a US NS2-J, but it had a bit of neck dive. My retailer had an NS4CRFM on the wall, and once I played it, I knew it was the bass that I really wanted. I prefer the P/J setup, and it has no neck dive. Best regards!!!!
