SPECTOR BASSES // EURO LX5 vs. BOLT ON 

I’ve had a 5 string euro for a good 10 years and it’s one of the best sounding/feeling basses period.

I own 2 EU Spectors. Almost perfect basses, only downsides are high fret access and extremely fat necks (which might be good for their signature sound).

Man just at the moment when I was seriously beginning to think about buying this exact Spector LX 5 !! I hope that we will see these basses again on your channel to have more exemples of how they sound, especially in a mix if ever possible ! Thx guys ;)

I prefer the bolt on tone here, but the sustained and clarity of the neck thru is undeniably great!

To me, the Spector Euro series basses are one of the finest available basses in the world. Impressive looks, hardware, woods, playability, and, of course, sound. I think I don't overtravel when I say that you might actually hear any Spector through any well-done mix. To an instrument like the bass, which is usually not that present, this is probably the most positive comment anyone could make about your sound. The Euro series is living proof of that and even at a moderate price point.

Aesthetically, I love the classy look of the roasted maple neck on the Euro Bolt! I own 3 (one with the SSD logo) Spectors made in the Czech Republic back in the 90's. They're awesome!

I used to own a Spector Rebop 5 Euro bass. They are such high quality instruments!

I have a euro 5 LX from (I think) 2006/2007. But it came with EMG pickups (also in blue with flame maple top). It really is a tank. Great bass

the tone pump pre amp has alot more high attack then the aguilar ob3 ,the tone pump gives it that bright spector sound for sure

Spectors are so cool, one of my dream basses is a 4 String Spector with a PJ config, preferably in white.

Both of these basses are fantastic! In fact, I just brought home a Euro 4 string LX blue flame yesterday. And Spector install a gold tone bridge and gold tuning keys!! Crazy fly!!! It came polished, set up and ready to roar with that Spector king of the jungle sound!!

I’ve owned a Spector NS2 j for 37 years. Best bass I’ve ever owned and have owned several.

They really sound different, but they also have different electronics and pickups. How much influence does it make on the overall sound? Lots, i guess

I have a Euro 4lx with the P/J pickup arrangement. Best sounding bass in the mix in my opinion,you can hear it in that closing riff. Still trying to get a good solo slap tone out of it though.

Pretty tight sounding B-string for a "normal" strung/scale bass

Great basses I have euro 5 LX with maple top and Bart pick ups. Nice playing but if I may say so the video doesn't show the massive tone range of these basses i.e. sharp and snappy for slap style to deep pounding or booming floor shaking for other styles. All dialed in with just 2 tones and 2 volumes. No blend, no pull taps and no switches. Just easy to find great tone everywhere. Love em

If its a current lx it should be a trim pot tone pump which lets you dial it back a little to get consistent tone between it and the euro bolt

Nice review, as always. Both are great. I think the combo of the bolt-on/ Aguilar makes it warmer in the lower register, but both basses are piano bright in the mids and highs, with exceptional clarity. But I want a Euro Wimbish LX. SCARY GOOD.

Is it worth mentioning the LX5 has a $500 higher price tag? Maybe for some, considering the differences in the basses overall.

I have owned a few of Stuart Spector's Basses, they are very nice and so is Stuart.... The earlier ones were pretty heavy but very good sounding...

Got a sweet water exclusive euro 5 lt (violet burst matching headstock ash wings ebony board emg active dc40 pickups and spector tone pump still getting everything where i want it.) Then i need to upgrade my laptop so i can get a good quality video of it. I absolutely love it.. Next spector is either going to be a eurobolt 4 with that tobacco finish or a older euro 4lx we will see in time i guess .. Hi. You did not say a word about the difference of the price. As far as I am informed, the neckthrough is 800-1000 more expensive.

Spector, Ibanez BTB, Peavey Cirrus and Fender P Bass I think are the best sounding basses for my style of music which is metal lml

That bolt-on has a lot more mids happening and will stand up better in a busy mix. It's far more natural to cut the mids on the bolt-on than it is to try to add mids to the NT. That's not to see you can't make a NT a monster in the mix, it just takes a little more doing IMHO. I find this exact same difference between the Warwick Thumb BO's vs NT's.

Go ahead and pick one. You'll end up buying the other one later anyway. Even their Korean basses are awesome. I have one that's over 20 years old. I put a different preamp and pickups in it and I'll put that bass up against amything as far as tone goes. Brass nut,brass bridge,and neck through construction make that bass growl like a T-Rex.

When i first hit the studio with my band and my ibanez sr505 i thought "woah, i got a great sounding bass, nothing can go wrong!". Yeah... the sound guy looked at it and gave me this look that says "oh boy you give me tough shit to work with, that thing fuxking suuuucksss". Well, now i got only one kidney but i think that after i buy one of these, he will be satisfied lmao

Nice tone. I like the piano=like tone. I'd go for the neck-through right now.

I extensively tried the Bolt model at a local store, shortly after being released. I was shocked and not impressed...construction was shoddy. The neck had irregular curves on both sides that couldn't be straightened by me (said shop lets me adjust their stuff to my liking, I've spent enough money there), the knobs were almost all loose, and the Aggy pickups were very one-dimensional. It was like either all or nothing combined with the Tone Pump. Now, on the other hand, the NT model blows the bolt model out of the water, imo. I recently bought one with the same preamp, but with EMG TW pickups. Those are already way more versatile than Aguilar's, at least with the stock preamp, and also, each EMG pickup can be switched between single-coil or dual. Plus, the NT has a separate battery compartment that's super-fast to change a dead 9-volt, and has top-shelf Gotoh tuners on top of that. The Bolt has very cheap, one-bushing generic tuners, with the battery being in the control cavity (royal pain, even if the screw holes are brass-threaded like the NT, I think). The NT also gives you Schaller straplocks. Most of all, the construction on the NT is so much better, that's it's worth $650-700 more. Nothing is loose, everything is solid and tight, and I adjusted the neck to be straight, no problems whatsoever. That, and the gloss neck is amazingly quick for that finish. The finish is automotive-grade good, too. If you're on the fence, spend a bit more (if you can), and get the NT model.

And the spec I was hoping to see was the string spacing at the bridge. I had to sell my Euro 5 LX made 10 years ago because my fingers were missing the strings now and then due to the close spacing. I was used to my Fender 4 strings. Very uncomfortable feeling. Loved the tone but it was hard to play. I bought 2 Fender 5 strings and at 19mm the string spacing feels great. Have they widened it at all lately? Great review otherwise thanks. Tod

I feel there's a major element missing in demos like this. Not criticizing, you guys did a great job! However, nobody ever demos these instruments in lower tunings. I have a couple Spectors(Ethos and Dimension). In standard tuning, they're great... But in GCGCF, or drop C in the 4 string, they're different instruments entirely. I'd like to see more demos that include those tunings just to hear what these beasts can do. I admit I have a slight bias. The Ethos5 is pretty good in standard tuning, but in GCGCF is an absolute animal.

The camera work on this review makes me feel like I have had the brown acid.

I really like the NS design, but for me the Spector sound is too "Hi-Fi". They are great for hard rock and metal anyway. If i have to choose one i prefer the Euro LX.

Satinless STEEL strings deliver the "Piano-Like" sound. Maple fretboards deliver more TONE or Highs than Rosewood. A lighter bass sounds LESS like a bass. The BEST thing Zou can do is, TURN that "TONE-PUMP, down please! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Or you WON'T have an amp left

It's a myth that neck-thrus have more sustain than bolt-ons. Every test done shows otherwise, and neck-thrus damp highs quicker. The bolt-on sounds like the note sustained longer here as well. I think it has to do with increased coupling force at the joint increasing rigidity. Also, Maple doesn't generally resonate as much as Alder, or Mahogany. That's why more midrange generally is heard through the pickups. Less is lost via resonance.
