What are the differences between Spectra's CR700 and CR600?
First, understand that Spectra's CR700 is the latest model from Spectra and is intended to replace the CR600. The major difference between the two is that the CR700 has a bigger reception window. In addition, the CR700 features a more intuitive button placement and is built more rugged than the CR600.

From the literature I have been reading the older cr600 can detect a laser with in 270 degrees, while the cr700 detects a laser with in 200 degrees. Also the cr600 has a metal housing and the cr700 is plastic. Is the older model better? They are about the same price. Thank you

The Cr700 is the latest model in the series with the major upgrade being a larger receiver eye window. Yes, the CR600 has 270 degree reception angle compared to the CR700's 200 degree, but most guys in the field actually preferred a larger receiver window over the additional 70 degrees. We recommend going with the latest model, the CR700 as the CR600 will be discontinued in the future which can cause issues getting support down the line.

The larger eye window is a plus, biggest reason I use Spectra over Topcon. Only bad thing I can say about the 600 is that the wiring used to connect the battery terminals and leads is tiny stuff, and the connections broke within a few uses; but my digging isn't exactly black loam. I finally did a thorough soldering job and encased everything in silicone, it's been okay since. Also, the wireless cab display is nice to have, but takes your eyes off the work. I find I use it only once in awhile, like when the bucket is out of sight and I need to feel for grade. When digging in building pads, subgrades for concrete, shallow trenches etc. it's really just a hood ornament.
