Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

MP3s and file sharing made it digital, and the companies were scared. Steve Jobs solved the problem for the companies and artists, and properly packaged and presented albums for all consumers on iTunes for credit card purchase. He restored the business viability. I agree 30% is too high.

@C-Lyfe85

I'll just say Steve Jobs restored the status quo of the music industry. Meaning the record company rates in most of the money and the artist gets pennies. He helped the industry morph into digital, when they were unwilling to. So he saved there behind, but it didn't really change anything for the artist. Probably made it worse.

thats why i understand andre 3000. people credit his work with Outkast as his greatest work, but in his mind, he likes it..but he probably thinks rap in itself is a hard genre to be a true artist in. outkast did a good job at the end of their career not following trends, but in the beginning they rapped about hustling on the block, driving in cadillacs, and the lifestyle of a down south gangster. rap is such a tricky genre because the fans aren't really interested in true artistry. they're not interested in rap for artistry. they are interested in rap because it's just what they're supposed to be into. it's moreso a lifestyle trend like the latest jordans or fashion style. that's the downside to rap. 95% of the fanbase doesn't even appreciate it as real art--an artist has about a 1-2 year window to get all he/she can get from rap before their career turns to dirt, people don't seek or search for artists that they like; they are content getting their artists handed to them by algorithms from youtube and what other people like at the time. rap is an artform to me, but unfortunately, it's a genre that doesn't appreciate true artistry..only about 10% of the fanbase look at it like art. its so trendy and based on the current moment in time that an album from 10 years ago is ancient, whereas in rock music, they have classic rock radio stations that have been on the air since the 1980s. .plus rap culture doesn't even try to teach the new young fans about the past. they made tv shows about the wu-tang, but most young people under 25 didnt even listen to wu-tang. they just watched the show because it was similar to BMF and was about crime. it's a standard and a requirement for younger people to learn the classics in jazz, rock, country, etc..they even cover their songs and re-create their songs..but in rap, we just don't look at it as art. it's just a consumer product because all the rappers really talk about is consumerism, so the energy doesn't attract artistry. in the 90's, rappers were talking about heavy topics..like Fat Joe's 1998 album Don Cartegena had a song called "The Hidden Hand' all about how Terror Squad fell victim to committing crime against their own race, how they became drug dealers and got mind-tricked into the criminal lifestyle, how lack of self-esteem made them turn to the streets, etc...but that stuff doesn't get praised as art, even though it is. That's what makes rap art. It allows the ugliness of the streets to be transformed into poetry...but most fans just don't respect the genre like that.
@UniqueAccessEnt

Great topic and convo. What would Mr. Wendal say about all this? Funny, I just heard Bill Burr the comedian talk about ( how movies and his own shows, even after super success, are cheapened and he's powerless to Netflix because the nature of streaming). It's sad but if wasn't Steve Jobs, or Napster, or Spotify, or whatever consumer and capital based model, then a substitute or some new corporate entity would arise in a hyper competitive market. There's no real solution to tech folks taking money from musicians and artists ( or cheapening the arts industry and the entire social world of entire generations as a whole) unless some kind of regulations are put in place...and in the good ole USA, the land of free markets, nothing like this seems to ever be a possibility, especially since no one seems to really be complaining at all ( except artists, but they're not loud enough , and if they are, are labeled as Luddites) with an overstimulated and zombified consumer audience used to and now demanding all content be free.

I'm an old head like Speech but I disagree on one thing. How media is delivered has no bearing on its quality. If people wanted physical media then they would buy it. If demand is there they'll sell it. Look, even Taylor Swift had her 1989 CD in Target stores. I don't know what numbers that CD sold, but there had to be a demand there. Even before Jobs, the writing was on the wall. There was napster, Bit Torrent etc. These where not legal services, but someone would come along and make a legal service. Also newspapers are gone, Movies on discs are dead. Unfortunately music has always been a commodity and bigbusiness did what big business will always do and find a way to increase economies of scale to maximize profits. Good or bad that has always been the case.
@UniqueAccessEnt
@UniqueAccessEnt Месяц назад
We hear you, @lw5495. But your points bring up several other questions. Among them: why do people stop buying music? Our parents kept buying music as they got older (even if it slowed down as they aged), but our generations really don't buy music anymore. Artists still put out vinyl, cassettes, and CDs, even in limited quantities; Arrested Development is among them. But as the way the media was delivered changed, so did (especially older) people's desire to purchase music wane. It's a complicated situation, indeed. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.

I agree with unfair comparisons of physical only sales vs bs streaming. Im pretty sure if Drake released a physical release only album, that s8&& would flop. Because most of his fans have been consuming his music through streams exclusively. But I disagree with Apple crushing the music industry. Too much supply of music artists and songs are wtf crushed the music industry. I cant imagine going to Tower Records or Sam Goody and not being able to browse Cds because everybody and their mama has a song and album tf out. The same s&*&& is happening to podcasting.
