The song ‘Something’ is another Harrison classic. Dubbed by frank sinatra as “The greatest love song ever written”

This song is one of Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs of all time, along with "Something". George was a fantastic talent, in the shadows of John and Paul for a long time, and then broke out with incredible songs like WMGGW, Something, Taxman, Here Comes the Sun, If I Needed Someone, etc. Then of course he did the All Things Must Pass album - voted one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. During this period, George was reading I Ching. A form of Chinese philosophy based on randomness and what ever happens is meant to be. He opened up a random book to a random page and saw the words 'Gently weeps'. He set the book down and wrote this all time classic. Excellent video HB. Cheers, RNB

IIRC (which is not something that should be relied upon) in the slightly different version I heard, it was a technique for stimulating creativity. You open a book randomly, and take the last word of the left-hand page and the first word of the right-hand page, then write something around those two words. The words George got were 'gently' and 'weeps'. But this technique may well have been based on Taoist ideas, as expounded in the I Ching. After all, it's all connected... :-)
@ricknbacker5626
@ricknbacker5626 3 года назад
I am using George Harrisons explanation for the songs origins. I am in no position to personally discuss Eastern philosophy's. I'm a lowly bass player and I Ching (et all) is way above my pay grade. PC, you have a much better grasp on the subject than I ever will. Interesting that John Lennon lists I Ching in his litany of things he DOESN'T believe in. In his song GOD from The Plastic Ono Band album r(ecorded in the Autumn of 1970). John also lists, magic,, the Bible, tarot, Buddha, Jesus, yoga, Gita, Hitler, mantra, Kennedy, kings, Elvis, Zimmerman (Dylan) and last, but certainly not least, Beatles. Cheers, RNB
@papercup2517
@papercup2517 3 года назад
@@ricknbacker5626 Well, George's memory is probably more reliable than mine on the subject! But I don't think the explanations are necessarily contradictory. Allowing random 'fate' to decide things is based on an idea of going with the 'flow' (or the Tao or Way or Path) or natural unfoldment of everything, with an underlying understanding that there is some sort of vast unified field behind everything that exists... therefore, 'it's all connected'. This is expounded much better than I can describe it in a old classic from the 1970s, the Tao of Physics, which I highly recommend, although I would assume the science must be a bit dated by now.. But anyway, IIUC, it's both an ancient mystical and a plausible scientific concept. All in One, One in All, etc... I don't know what you think, but I have wondered about John's 'God' song, whether what he's really ranting against is 'belief' itself. Because obviously the Beatles for example did exist, whether you 'believe' in them or not! Maybe what he was objecting to is idolising things in a way that's really 95% one's own projections. So there might be a grain of truth in them, but the impulses of religion, or Beatlemania, or fashions for mystical preoccupations (like the I Ching, astrology, Tarot, magic etc in the later 60s to 70s) can sometimes lead people to adopt beliefs that are quite superficial and may be more of a psychological prop, or escapist fantasy, or ego trip than a genuine means to greater enlightenment. Some people did get really obsessed with some of this stuff - I remember hearing of one guy who would throw the I Ching (ie use it as an oracle to get pointers to what to do next) every hour, thus becoming totally dependent on it and unable to do anything without it. I'm pretty sure John and Yoko were as much into it all as anyone, at least for a while. But at some point, as John was getting deep into the Primal Scream therapy and really facing the truth, digging into all his inner demons, he may have come to the point of needing to clear out all the half-baked ideas he may have used previously as emotional props, and get down to something more basic and human and vulnerable, without the quasi-mystical props.

Been a Beatles extreme fan my entire life. Born in '65, The Beatles were still writing the music that is now a part of mankind, and to be endelible such as the great composers of the 18th century and forward. It blows my mind to know I've lived it! I took up drums at age 14 because of Ringo, and I still play now. Each Beatle has appealed stronger to me through each stage of my life, but George is who has spoken to me the deepest in the last 20 or so years. He is the reason I have an appreciation for Indian music as well. George wrote this song, and was used to being denied by the brilliant Lennon/McCartney team, so George asked Eric Clapton, a close friend, to lay down the lead guitar work and make it sound like the guitar is weeping. Then George insisted that Eric accompany him to Abby Road studio 1 to record it along with the other three lads. He knew that English propriety would overcome objections from Paul and John. It would not be proper to argue about it in front of their guest. A brilliant political move by George. The rest, as we say, is history. God bless George, John, Ringo and Paul.

The producers didn't pay a whole lot of attention to George's stuff. They would give one or two sets on each album, the rest of the track went to John and Paul. As a matter of fact, he was the first one of the Beatles to release an album after the spliti in April of 1970. It was an unprecedented 3 albums long all songs rejected by the Beatles. Great reaction. Hard core Beatles fans do love George! Eric Clapton was George's friend and Harrison talked him into coming along to play on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" because he felt John and Paul weren't giving the song their full efforts. Having Clapton show up snapped everyone to their "best behaviour" and the result is one the BEatles best tracks. George was coming into his own more as a song writer and finished with arguably the two best songs on the Beatles' last album: "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun". Clapton one of only a few people other than "the four" who played on Beatles songs married the person that the song was about, who was married to George at the time. Crazy times.

That's why the Beatles were so great... When you have a " third string song writer" putting out stuff this great. and ALL of them can sing... then you you have the greatest band of all time.

George is my favorite by far. No diss on the rest, but his solo work is fabulous, his messages are inspirational, and his guitar. Oh, the guitar. Just listen to All things must pass. The things he couldn't express with the Beatles just flooded out! Must listen music! Love the reaction videos! Great job!

He was overshadowed by Paul and John lol That's why ppl didn't talk about him AS MUCH ! His best songs IMHO (with The Beatles) are Here Comes The Sun (my pers fav), Something, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Piggies, Within You Without You, Taxman, I Want To Tell You, Love You To and if you feel like taking a trip on LSD land, Listen to "Blue Jay Way" lol

You need to check out George's solo album, the one after the Beatles broke up, called 'All things Must Pass'. The main song is 'My Sweet Lord'. George wrote many songs for the Beatles, but there were more that he had written that didn't make it onto Beatle's records. So he did them on his own albums. Yes, he was more overlooked than the others. The quiet one. It makes me wonder why he didn't collaborate with John and Paul more on the song-writing.
