I just miss them ripping on the bad stuff they've had to get too diplomatic to not alienate potential guests. They missed the worst part about the Rhino scene in Spiderman 2..it was a trailer scene, ending right as Spidey swings, implying go see the movie to find out!..and yet it's the final scene, ending the same point the trailer did. That's suuuper greasy and manipulative haha, even if the rest of the movie is still a dumpster fire, it had like Zack Snyder DC levels of bad writing villains and plot

I love how Joe looks quickly at the King Kong shot and is all like ”Yep, that was months upon months of hard work”. Even if we make fun of the jankiness of some aspects of it, that’s a considerable amount of effort and skill that went into it.

That was one of those shots that, when I was watching it, I really wanted to be impressed by and appreciate as a whole, but the jank parts were just too noticeable for me to get to that point. I had to mentally break it down and appreciate the parts that were good - the animal and environmental renders - and try to ignore the bad - the live action comped parts.

I worked on that stampede sequence as an animator on Kong, and it was the least effective sequence in the film for all the reasons that they pointed out. First, it went on way too long, but also, as they said, plates were shot in daylight, and shadows of dinosaurs had to be cheated over them, which never looks right. Pretty much everything else, though, was nearly flawless, especially Kong himself, and the New York City stuff.

As they commented though - beyond the comp issues with shadows, the actual work on the creatures and environments, basically everything that wasn’t that specific problem, was excellent. It holds up very very well in all those other regards

Honestly. if the worst thing about a shot is some of the plates didn't match quite right, then you still did an incredible job with the shot. I can't imagine the stress of working under that kind of time constraint and with those limitations had to have been like, so even though the sequence as a whole isn't perfect, you clearly did your best within the restrictions you had to work with.

@@stefanandrews5098 Peter Jackson had a very, very, veeery detailed series of vlogs (well, the early 2000s kind) where he showed all aspects of the making of the film, it's pretty interesting how they used everything in this scene. Like the leaves and debris are real and filmed on a green screen, branches and twigs as well.

I thought cg looked really good even when it wasn’t necessarily that convincing. It had a richness and tonal consistency and it just looked - the whole show looked - incredibly expensive. It felt like luxury tv.

Like: How they make sounds for things that don't even exist; How they made the T-Rex or Godzilla roar; Even the subtle ways they have to add basic clothing, movement, and walking sounds into animated films. I think a star trek VFX react episode would be really cool. You could look at shots across time and how the technology has changed what is possible and where it has faltered a bit. For a more specific shot there was one in The Next Generation season 4, episode 5, at about 4 minutes 30 seconds in that really stumped me when I saw it. I would love to see how you guys react to it!

Looking at Air Force One made me think: If you, Corridor, were tasked with making the plane crash scene, in say a few weeks, with modern tools and process, as if it were going into a blockbuster movie, how good could you make it? Is it actually impossible, or could it be made to look real, without big-budget resources? How good is modern "pure CG"?

I feel like a practical model shot dry-for-wet is still the way to go, but with a physical interactive element. Mount the model nose up, maybe rig it to pull apart, and dump popcorn salt across it for scale water spray.

Just started watching the new halo series, the first fight scene has a great combination of good and bad VFX to unpack. The industry insider was willing to make valid comments about "bad" CGI, but also explained why it could have turned out that way. In past episodes with special guests, they didn't often talk about the negatives side of things.

I really appreciate that bad VFX shots are being shown again. They are fantastic for helping general audiences understand why they went wrong. They think laziness, but don't realize it's almost always just lack of time

they'll show them when they're not talking about the MCU, cause whenever they talk MCU films they have a guest on and can't show them in a bad light. No Way Home had stacks of just awful VFX but they only talked about the good ones and the ones that could've been slightly better. Yes TASM 2 was in here but it's not MCU and they weren't super harsh.

As hard as vfx as they said, even with all the bad ones, you have no idea how much worse it was before they worked on it. They always work their hardest on these shots and never try to make it bad. To blame it all on them directly or indirectly is just rude and disrespectful.

I would love an explanation of how you would approach older movies today. As for examples, the one that comes to mind is Robot Jox. The kid inside me that will never age loves that movie, but it is a hard watch after being spoiled with current standards.

This dude is such a great guest. I'd love to hear more about the drawbacks of the volume. Watching the Obi Wan show made me think about how shooting in the volume can make things feel small and fake in a certain way.

I'm STILL trying to figure out what happened with that because I've seen the Mando reels and know folks that worked on that show & I kid you not they have old school stop motion blown up to massive scale on the volume in Mando looking great, foreground, midground, and close background practical set pieces that are digitally extended into the volume seamlessly, meanwhile then parts of Kenobi look like a stage play with somebody's $200 portable projector way out of focus in the background. If they just stuck with that it would have been fine, it'd look like A New Hope with its reused hallways and obvious matte paintings, but because of the other grandiose stuff and the handful of seamless shots on par with Mando those janky ones just stand out WAY more in Kenobi & I still can't quite figure out what went wrong. My best guess so far is that maybe in pre-production VFX made huge changes and set design just didn't get the time to keep up so they delivered the best they could, then in post VFX didn't get the time they needed to marry the elements with roto and compositing.

Yeah the only other things I can think of are that the cinematographer had no experience on the volume maybe (I haven't looked, I'm just speculating), or that Chow got overwhelmed. Sidenote, I rewatched the Mando episode where he fights the mudhorn, and that episode looks more beatiful than a 200 million dollar blockbuster. Kenobi (and Book of Boba for that matter) seem to really be mishandling the volume, or getting too ambitious or something.

@@Pastrybfs These are all good possibilities, but my first guess (it's always my first guess) is what @hazonku said - they made either some big changes, or too many small changes, and they simply ran out of time. This isn't just because that's always my first guess with VFX, just like Joe Farrell suggested, but because recently we've been seeing some VFX artist testimonials online about the terrible conditions Marvel movie VFX are often made under, and deadlines in particular. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mandalorian, being Disney's big Star Wars experiment, was made with far more prep time, and on Boba Fett and Obi Wan Disney decided to tighten the deadlines like they do with Marvel and the VFX immediately suffered.

I'm always hoping that they would react to a bunch of Dr. Who stuff. Therese is a lot of cool VFX to look at, and a whole lot of hilariously bad VFX too. The practical effects from the original series have always felt creative though there was fewer nonpractical VFX. The new series from 2005 flipped the use of VFX, relying heavily on Computer-generated stuff and fewer practical. You could definitely tell there was a lot of heart put into it and paved the way for VFX on BBC shows.

New thing to do for the show: “The Last Starfighter (1984)”. Anything from that movie would be great to learn more about (I love this movie so much), but specifically the ‘Melting Ice Cream Caves’ scenes would be great to get your thoughts on. Depending on which version you are watching (slightly different movie edits have been released over the decades), that would start at about the 1 hour 6 minute mark. If you are wondering what I mean by ‘Melting Ice Cream Caves’, if you watch you’ll instantly think “Ohhhhhh…. yeah. I get it.” Such an amazing CGI-heavy movie done more than 38 years ago. I can’t even guess as to how many times I have watched this movie from start to finish. I want to learn more about that one scene, but please don’t only do that one not-so-great scene. It would be such a shame if all the amazing scenes were ignored and only that one scene was focused on, lol.

@@assaultbunny3231 Me as well. Every half-dozen or so “VFX Artists React’ videos, I’ll mention “The Last Starfighter” as something that they can react to next. I am honestly surprised that none of them have ever once mentioned it in any video on this channel (unless it missed it). The Last Starfighter is obviously not as well known as other films, but it was a fairly ground-breaking film (for the mid-80s) in terms of CGI.

First: Awesome show, and I still love the reaction vids especially! Second: I recently rewatched quite a few Star Trek movies and episodes (eg TNG, Star Trek Insurrection), and saw a lot of new ones (Discovery, Strange New Worlds) and I would love to hear stuff about the effect used and perhaps even how they ‘grew up’, including your opinion on what I believe was a rather poorly received look in Discovery using all the lens flare effects. Thirdly: I wonder if you also do non moving stuff like paintings, 2d art, etc and are interested in talking about that. If so, I would be interested what that would be!

One I remember seeing them mention in an ep was a lot of the roads in the chase scene/s in the last James Bond were CGI replacements. One of the big reasons being they need to be able to shoot multiple times, but skidding a car around creates skid marks etc. So it was easier to just fully replace the road, rather than try to match up shots that do/don't have skids visible that don't break continuity etc.

This was a really great episode. You touched on a lot of things that did not work in certain shots, and how to improve them. But you did not outright call them bad. I think that was very effective in talking about all the aspects of VFX work. Not just what you love about famous VFX shots. Joe was also very insightful. I like the fact that it seems it's mostly the background. But the things in the set tend to be practical. As you don't got to blend all the fake props in front with all the fake in the back.

I think the difference is that in Volume is harder to "just fix it in post" since the "cgi" is done beforehand, so it requires a lot more planning. Like it was said in the video, the biggest culprit in bad cgi is bad planning and lack of time.

I finally watched every episode of this VFX reacts series (and subscribed now as a result) but now I can know I'm suggesting something that hasn't been done in a vid yet. Two scenes from Dracula Untold. One is a from the first major battle scene where there is a shot of the battle seen through the reflection of a rotating sword. Then the other is the huge bat horde in the second major battle scene.

When I first saw Jackson's King Kong, I thought the obvious blue/greenscreening was a deliberate tribute to the original, kinda like "yeah we know you can see they're running in front of a screen, just like back in the day, but what happens on our screen is more spectacular, so just enjoy the ride".

The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! For the VFX series you gotta react to *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* Also at the end of second one there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. If you want something a bit crappy the old Barbie movies could be great for that (fe. The 12 Dancing Princesses, for the dancing) Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight (tho technically it's sabers i think)

The 1998 version would probably be more interesting to talk about, since it has some very nice shots and some really terrible shots. It's kind of a good snapshot of where late 90s CGI was at, and what happened when studios tried to get too ambitious.

Lost in Space the original black and white TV show, for its time for 1965 was impressive. They did zero G scenes (in the first episode) that no one else dared to try at the time. And then there is the scene from Lost in Space (1998) with the alien that was bonkers terrible. I think the animators at the time were still clinging to old school methods of squashing and stretching. So we got this little alien dude who's eyes would bulge out, and it just looks like a cartoon. I worked on the new Lost in Space Netflix TV show. Though not as a CGI artist. I was doing background acting on that series. I AM an CGI animator. I've done CGI work, but just not on that show. Nevertheless I would be happy to answer questions, if I can. What I appreciated about the Netflix TV show is just how much was practical. They built an impressive set. They commissioned 2 actual operating rovers be built (chariots I think they called them). The spaceship was as real as one could expect. The mothership built 2 floors on top of one another and was just huge. You could wander around the set and feel like you were on something real.

@@FablestoneSeries Heh, along the same lines, I bet the crew would freak out learning about the effects on the 1950s show "Space Patrol." It didn't just have to do all its effects in-camera, it had to do them in-camera *during live broadcasts.* Model shots, miniatures on wires, mirror-based compositing, moving backgrounds on treadmills, etc, all done in realtime - and any mistake would be seen by millions. It was practically a magic show, and the work that went into shooting an episode was nuts.

@@jasonblalock4429 Yeah i forgot about that. That's definitely worth a deep dive. I promise you any effects that were good from the 1998 version were practical. the robot, for example was a Jim Henson puppet, one of the last things he worked on before he died. One of reasons i liked the set of the new one, is how much work went into things that would likely never been seen. For example, they built a pie slice of the habitat ring, of the Resolute, that could be dressed up to look like any part of the ship. in the big room that was everything from the lunchroom to the command center there was a bay window that looked out over the habitant ring as it wrapped around. They built the exterior of the ship so what you were seeing outside wasn't CGI (except for the stars). any other show would have just stuck a green screen out the window.

Okay you want examples, we have examples. My partner and I have a mutual love of film, are over 50 years of age, and my partner used to do 3D back in the days of 3D Studio V1 Jaguar, AGES ago. Life happened, so he never went further, but he did impress someone at what turned into a BIG company in digital later on. His first film that made him so curious about the industry was Jason and the Argonauts and those iconic skeletons by Ray Harryhausen. You touched on that scene in one episode here. Darren, my partner, suggests Keloid by BLR VFX (Big Lazy Robot). Watching these videos for the last 2 years has given me a new found respect for vfx artists. Learning the ins and outs of it all and how complex the work is is fascinating. I always loved movies but when i watch them now I pay alot more attention to the practical, visual effects, cinematography and stunt coordinations and see it in a totally different light; It drives my girlfriend nuts but oh well. It makes me wish i could go back 10 years and get into film making. I've been trying to regurgitate this knowledge to people with my dumb dumb brain hoping i don't butcher it too much then just end it with "you gotta just watch the videos". Keep showing us how the sausage is made guys, this is good stuff. P.S. Lighting and shadows look like a pain in the ass.

You should take a look at 'The Fountain' - specifically the biosphere spaceship scenes and the use of macrophotography for the nebula; could also take a look at some TV series with lots of effects like 'The Expanse' or 'Dark'.

Here are a few things to look at - the mechs in Hypernauts (the show was basically a tech demo for cgi mechs), any of the scenes from Annihilation, old docuseries like air crash investigation, Spectral, the vampires in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Final Fantasy Kingsglaive, Turkish Star Wars.

There's a surprising amount of invisible visual effects in Forrest Gump. There's crowd multiplication in many scenes, sky replacements, the table tennis ball is all effects.

You GOTTA do the final fight in "Shadow in the Cloud", when Chloë Grace Moretz beats up the Gremlin in the water. The creature itself, the movement, the interaction with the water and with her... All so good, not just for a low budget movie, but so much better than any creature in "Shang-Chi" for example.
