Paul Gilbert discussing in one of his instructional videos that he likes to start alt picking phrases off with an upstroke, at least I believe that's what he said. Anyways, I found that starting certain phrases with an upstroke helped me play faster for whatever reason.

I've been playing for 10 years and always had issues playing fast alternate picking and when I tried to put my pick at 45 degrees I was like O.O Can't believe such a small tip like that improved my playing dramatically. Andy James is my new hero :D

Not at all, some players (like Satriani or Garsed) pick as little as possible but its for the legato sound that it creates. Played like Zakk Wylde and Al Di Meola pick everything for that more aggressive percussive sound. Others like Paul Gilbert Try to get a nice balance

I have been playing the guitar for 4 and half years and bass for 1 year. About two and half years ago I started to get speed in my fingers and I increased it naturaly, which now lets me play solos like Enter Sanmdan and Symphony of destruction. The bass is basicly the same thing. Plus, if start with the guitar and then jump from the guitar to the bass you´ll find the bass much easier to play cuz the guitar has much of the bass tricks. Just play naturaly and calmly and you´ll get there with time.

I think it's also about synchronization between the two hands. A slightly slower but accurately picked run to me is much more impressive than a faster but unclear or sloppy run.

That is the kind of sound that is mostly found with active pickups. Kind of a digital not as raw tone. Works well for high gain music as demonstrated.

Do you have a video where you show examples of practice schedules. I meen like no guitarrist on the internet (I've searched alot) shows a clear practice schedule. Like how often and how much time should I spend each day on each lick/technique to see results. If you dont have a video about that, perhaps you could make one. I am a HUGE Andy James fan so I would be very happy if he did the lesson, because I love the way he's playing and the style. Thank you, hope you'll reply soon!

@SatyrX09 there are a lot of versatile guitarists. Nuno Bettencourt, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Rick Emmett, Steve Hackett, John Frusciante, Paul Gilbert etc. Not comparing their chops, but all these guys are very versatile.

The little new nugget I got from this is to try and think about accents, something we all do automatically, but probably a major part of why sometimes my playing feels liquid and sometimes I have potato hands.
@guitarshredking
@guitarshredking 13 лет назад
I have a question - I find that when I try to play an alternate picking pattern over 5 or 6 strings that i need to shift my elbow because if I didn't then by the time I reach the high notes my wrist is on too much of an angle and I tend to screw up the higher notes. Is there a way I can overcome this?

at 1:02 its 11 12 14 on d string and the 11 on g (UPSTROKE!) then come back down again exactly reverse remember strictly use alternate picking up and down afterwards he moves 2 frets down and does the same then down step again then return to normal position and go 2 step up twice hope that helps

is the speed then reliant on alternate picking and not just on the speed of the left hand pulling off and hammering on? i might be wrong, but i thought most guitarist picked as little as they could and moved really fast with their left hands

after 1:19 when he starts speed picking really fast, Is he picking each note once or is he just kind of tremolo picking and running his fingers through the shapes?

@intii93 judging from your post, you have the patience and discipline to get things done. Just make sure your wrist is relaxed (firm but relaxed. squeezing the pick for high attack and small movement is different from flexing your whole arm). It's just going to take a great deal longer than 1 1/2 years. time is on your side, take advantage of it and you'll be shredding like it's cloud 9 in no time.

@brshreds
@brshreds 13 лет назад
@shreddernuo Haha no problem. And most music stores, at least ones that cater to guitarists, have them. I got mine at the local shop. If there's a Guitar Center near you, I know they have them, but pretty much anywhere that sells guitar accessories. If you don't have any luck there, it's really easy to find them online. Just Google "guitar footstool." And most are adjustable, so if you're really short or tall, or just sitting in a different-sized chair, you should be okay. Hope that helps!

@plaidzincs It just isn't a phrase that's really used over here. We speak the same language over here, but you could almost say we have different dialects. We each have different phrases, means of expression, even some words mean different things. I had never heard it before either, however because of the context it wasn't too hard to pick up
