Speed Special - OnCourse Episode 17

There is a serious need for speed out there right now.
From state of the art super sleek foiling Moths that will go upwind at 20knots, to ice yachts that will hit 80mph and more - both of which we cover in this episode.
But what's really grabbed our attention recently are three fascinating record breaking campaigns. Two are focussed on the outright sailing speed record that look to flight as a large part of the answer. And yet the very team you might have thought was up for a record breaking blast along a 500m course is actually having a crack at being the fastest on dry land. Emirates Team New Zealand might have led the foiling agenda for over a decade and have two consecutive America’s Cup wins to prove it, but they now want to set a speed record on land. We find out why…and how.
So, on the face of it, it’s a mixed up world but the speed sailing scene is an exciting one, especially when you look at the radical machines that these teams are developing.
But there's more in this episode including why building a classic J-Class yacht is child's play. Then, there's a report on who shone at this year's Caribbean 600, an offshore modern classic that proved once again to be just as tough as its reputation.
Plus, we have another double helping of Docktalk.

I loved seeing the Great South Bay Scooter. (minute 15:05) Reminded me of my youth. I grew up between the forks on Long Island. We just called them Scooters. They generally ride on the port, center or starboard two rails, but single rail is also possible. They also can transition from ice to water and back. Often the bays would only partially freeze over. Even with a partial freeze, you could take a Scooter out and get that much more sailing in. They also really teach you how to balance your sails.

Attempts to go this fast in water will require super-cavitation be created around the entire underwater wing. This can be achieved by pumping high-pressure air out of the leading edge of the wing, such that it is entirely surrounded by gas. The Skval torpedo by Russia is supposedly capable of several hundred knots underwater - and it uses a super-cavitation system. Anyone wanting to travel at superspeed in water is going to have to master super-cavitation, and learn how to maintain the bubble at all speeds and all angles of attack. Such a technological advance seems unlikely without massive investment - far beyond what it would take to simply break a sailing speed record.

Interesting to note that Henry Bossett, the drone pilot who filmed the antique South Bay Scooter on Bantam Lake, was one of the greatest designers and maker of the sails on those “Formula One” Skeeters that appeared just before the drone footage. Henry’s contribution to iceboating is monumental. He probably made 99% of all the sails on the east coast of America and a high percentage in the midwest.

I wonder about using a sort of paddle-wheel instead of supercavitating foils. The boat looks like a bike, but the wheels are notched into paddle blades. The wheels freely rotate to match the speed of the boat, so there's no cavitation. The paddles directly "drag" the water sideways, rather than slicing through the water like foils.

The Syroco fore aft pitch stability at lower speeds will be uncontrollable. They need something to stabilize the hull like a second foil or hydroplane which can lift free from the water when speed is sufficent for the tail to exert a stabilizing force. The tail also seems way too small.

11:14 The Kiwi's theory of more rubber on the salt equals more traction as ass backwards to reality plus the tandem wheel setup will compound the problem. They're going to get a better bite on the salt with a "single" front runner tire on the back, not two road racing slicks.

As far as syroco is concerned they may try to introduce supercavitation to at least parts of their 'keel' iot significantly decrease drag.

You need to design the vehicle so that it relies on air rather than water. Only touching the water when you need speed or course change.

Syroco is probably YEARS away from a working vehicle. I saw their prototype towed flight, didn't look like it was stable.

It has a bad set of failure modes in that config. Put simply, you can't pull on water with 100% reliability and sooner or later you will come out at speed...

I am a huge Lego fan and I love sailing more than I love Lego. If there's any way you could send me the info to try to build the Lego J-BOAT Svea, that you showcased on Planet Sail, Speed Special, On Course, episode 17, the Lego segment starts at 19 minutes into the video. I am very interested in actually building a J-BOAT out of Lego. Please help me out

trangenusa 0 seconds ago I just thought of something being a pilot, "flaps" put hydraulic flaps on the foil part that is in the water; it can be deployed or retracted via hydraulic control. Put flaps on the foil just like and airplane wing, you can do front and / or rear flaps or just rear flaps; and hydraulically control them

As a paragliding instructor of many years, I have severe doubts such a craft can be successful. Managing a paraglider wing is a tricky business when on land, and a wing which touches the water or is in the water becomes impossible to launch and fly. Suggesting that a module can manage the dynamic forces of the wing effectively and at such high speeds is a real stretch, and I do not accept it can be done. 3D renders are often used by conmen, and liars, to convince suckers to invest in garbage. Elon Musk uses it to lie non-stop about the future capabilities of his StarShip - and this French crowd is little different, sorry! Renders of electric aeroplanes are similar: nothing but delusional masturbation fantasies designed to remove cash from gullible "investors".
