This video is a podcast on speed training and development. The podcast is with Brian Kula. Coach Kula has worked with thousands of athletes in his career as a track & field, sport performance and football coach. He has coached multiple National Champions, All-Americans, Gatorade Players of the Year and State Champions in a variety of sports. Kula has 24 years experience in the athletic development of athletes at all levels from youth to professional. He has been certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

That's so Spot on: and Christian is going into his second year with the 49ers and he probably will be faster this year as he's been looking fast in practice. I also have Barry's Book on concentric deadlifting and plyo's for Sprinting.

Interned for the Arizona football S&C staff under Rich Rodriguez. Head guy was Chris Allen. Jamaican born, former sprinter for WVU. There is a reason that team of 0-3 star recruits made the fiesta bowl in 2014...they were faster than everyone else...even when tired

I worked with a Coach who loved Clyde Hart training, so when I became head coach at another school, I began our indoor season doing the same, guys were slow and injured. By Outdoor season had given it up and focused on speed and we began to dominate. Never looked back.

I need to start learning more about RPR really want to incorporate it into our warmups but I need to be far more knowledgeable first. Hoping by next year I know enough to start with our team. Great stuff as always guys

Coach, I've seen and read everything I could find of yours and I love it. In this video with Brian, you guys continuously refer to a "presentation" that you gave. Is there a video of that somewhere/could you point me in the right direction to find it? Appreciate you, keep doing what you are doing.

After building a good speed base, when considering introducing weight training, what protocols are you finding help increase speed/ elasticity???

Nothing in the weightroom improves elasticity. Nothing in the weightroom DIRECTLY improves speed. Strength is generally good for sprinters but sprinters exert force faster than slow strong athletes. That’s why a CNS-approach to sprinting is key.

Do you differentiate between speed and quickness? Can someone be fast without being quick and vice versa? Do you do anything to train quickness specifically?

I would think that quickness is a sub category of speed, it’s hard to be fast and not agile. A lot of the drills from X factor workouts rely on “pop” quick steps and taking off such as the box jumps without the box

Has anyone done an analysis of the difference of efficiency between top male vs female 400m sprint athletes? I ask because women appear to produce more bang per buck despite not having the bulk of most male sprinters. The female sprinters' efficiency / fluidity appears to be visibly superior. Add this thought too, that the current men's 400m world record holder is reported as being a diminutive 6' 0" (183cm) and 154lbs (70kg). Are we missing something?

Elite males and females are both FAST. Both 400 world records were run with elite 200m splits… world class sprinters.

Unfortunately, it is the "prevailing wisdom" to "Clyde Hart the track program." I read Charlie Francis books in the early 2000's thanks to Charles Poliquin and was following some of his workouts before then because Poliquin referenced him in his articles. When I would discuss speed training with other athletes at that time and now, I get looks like I am crazy. As a HS coach and a 43 years masters track athlete (with 7 kids), I am still running in the 11's in the 100 (pushing for 10's). Feed the Cats style of training is the ONLY reason I'm still able to compete at a high level. I'd have injured and demotivated myself out of the sport training like how most HS and unfortunately collegiate coaches do. Track is such a short-lived untapped sport because these coaches injure and deter many of the greats out of it.

I think that video is almost 2 years old. Brian is now 49 I believe.

I like the idea of not burning the steak….steak is usually meant to be a great meal, proper training should create a great performance….burnt steak = tired broke down athlete
