I really appreciate how you have the end result photo in your tutorials. You never take it away during your process. It's so useful and helpful to see. I'm waiting for my supplies to arrive before signing up to your course. ❤

Thank you, I'm glad it helps! I do it this way because I provide the original reference photo as a downloadable file with my tutorials (in the Academy) but I don't include the original drawing as a download This way you can look at the downloaded reference, but you can also see what the end drawing is going to look like (some people prefer looking at the reference rather than the end drawing - and I can't include both in tutorials so this is the next best thing!)

Excellent tips on the use of fixatives! And love the pencilling on the fur. It adds so much to the realism! 🥰

You can also use powder blender for colored pencils, it will only work on sanded paper. It works the best with polychromos and they behave similar to pastel pencils but you need a fixative

Thanks a lot for this wonderful tutorial. I also ended up using sanded papers when drawing with pastels and colored pencil together, sometimes I also use watercolor pencils at the beginning

I have seen pan pastels in sets or individually but find that they are too expensive for my budget. But I have plenty of soft pastel sticks about 5 or 6 drawers so instead of purchasing more I do the same idea by leaving them in their drawers (because they are organized) and just swipe the soft tools or inexpensive makeup wedges over them and apply it to my Pastelmat. I get my wedges and eye shadow applicators at a Dollar store and some have outlasted the soft applicators. And I can even rinse the wedges with soapy water. Bleach will literally eat them so they don’t completely turn new again but it won’t rub off the stains either. And I also use watercolor as an underpainting then I apply Art Spectrum pastel primer in the transparent color. The method you mentioned does save your pencils and the picture gets done quickly. And I really enjoy the Spectrafix Degas and Final fixative if I put them in a Flairosol sprayer so that they will not spit out or splatter at all.. Using the Art Spectrum pastel primer on hot pressed Arches compared to Luxarchival gave me the same results. I had no differences in layering even white over it and the homemade method was far less expensive. I am sure the Fabriano artistico hp or any high quality hp 140lb watercolor paper with the coating done with a wide sponge brush does the trick and is also completely and totally archival. And if one wants to tint it then they can too. My comparison was sent out via FB. I try to find methods that give the exact same results but on a budget. I have to. The supplies are really expensive. I certainly liked both results. Your picture looks very beautiful!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt

Those are all really great points 😊 In my experience, a lot of the cheaper options don't work with my techniques (or they don't give me the results I'm after) but if they work for you, then that's great! Everyone has different priorities/techniques/supplies/final results etc and that's part of the reason why I love art - it's so versatile, and there's no "right" or "wrong" way to do anything 😊
@jenniefrench1338
@jenniefrench1338 3 года назад
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Exactly. It gives many options and one certainly can grow accustomed to a particular method that works for them. And just trying other options that are archival is a way to brainstorm with others who may not have access for what ever reason. I really enjoy seeing what others use. Sometimes it surprises me too that with less their art can be just as beautiful. I was just thinking about my first set of Rembrandt pastels. They are firmer but a many artist uses them beautifully and now that multimedia is a “thing” or respected in the art community we have learned new techniques that before we would have never known without getting our hands messy. Thank you again for sharing your methods, I appreciate it and take care.

Great video! How does Lux Archival compare to PastelMat overall? (apart from the color pencil over PanPastel which Lux Archival seems to be better). Thank you.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
I talk about this a little bit in the tutorial, but I love Pastelmat for Pastels or coloured pencils by themselves 😊 Luxarchival seems to have a little more grainy texture, but that's helpful for coloured pencil over the top of pastel!

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thank you for the information. I have received a sample Lux Archival paper from Brush and Pencil website. I am yet to try it, so was curious how it would work. Great videos! 👍🏻

Luxarchival is really a sanded paper while Pastelmat is smooth and grabs the pastel or colored pencil and really can handle a lot of layering. When I first tried it I thought “how does this surface do this”. It really is amazing.
@Dude-co7ni

@@jenniefrench1338 good to know. Thank you for the info. 👍🏻 I personally haven't used Pastelmat. I have used Spectra Colourfix (it is an Australian brand). I am looking forward to using the Luxarchival paper sometime.

What if I use soft pastels instead of pan pastels . I know they are better and more worth it in the long run , but I can't get them rn, and I already have soft pastels .
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 2 года назад
You can use soft pastel sticks, but it is a lot harder and much more unpredictable You have to apply the sticks very lightly and make sure you really blend the pastel well (so it pushes the pigment into the paper) The problem with sticks is that you can't really control how much pastel you're laying down so it can fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly if you're not careful I know I sound like a walking advertisement for Pan Pastel but they're actually not that expensive when you compare how much pastel is in each pan Pan Pastels contain 40% more pastel than an average stick and have 4-5 times more coverage. They last a very long time in comparison to sticks You can actually just buy the basic set of 5 colours (red, yellow, blue, black and white) and mix any colour you need, just like paint! That is something you can't do easily with soft pastel sticks (this is why people usually have hundreds of pastel sticks - which is way more expensive than buying 5 Pan Pastels) I've had my set of pan pastels for about 5 years and haven't run out of any colour yet, and I do a lot of artwork , and if you take care of the Sofft tools, they last a long time as well 😊 There are also many other benefits such as not having to touch the pastel (so it's less mess on your hands/artwork/desk etc), less excess dust in the air, as well as being able to control how much pastel you are applying to your surface which means you don't fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly - allowing for the addition of a few layers of pastel pencils/coloured pencils etc if you wish! You can also use the smaller Sofft tools or brushes to apply into smaller areas, which can be hard to to with a soft pastel stick I honestly recommend Pan Pastels over any other type of pastel because they are actually more cost effective (along with all the other benefits mentioned above) 😊

I'm in the same position. I've only recently felt creative enough to get back into it. I remember I used to use various paint brushes to 'push' the applied soft pastel around and it seemed to work. To a degree. Hope that helps.
