Which is more important? Being a fast artist? Or having high quality art? What makes art high quality anyway? Here are my thoughts on probably one of the biggest dilemmas that artists face, and how I approach this after 20 years of working under the high pressure that comes from working in games.

i believe having some 3d props and modules ready to set up a scene and then work on it in photoshop is mandatory if you want to be fast, no matter how good you are as a painter, 3d solves many things like light and shadows without any trial and error

I'm starting to agree. I didn't do much with 3D, mainly focusing on digital painting, but I've noticed how slow I am, especially when I'm trying to get things like lighting and perspective to look good and even then it never looks quite right. But that changes when I have a 3D prop I can work with. It helps a TON! Now I'm taking a couple of blender courses (one for environmental design, another for sculpting creatures that also includes rigging and a bit of animation) and learning how to paint over in Photoshop. Its actually been a lot of fun so far

@@LadySingingWolf well of course you can do only painting, feng zu does only that as far as i know and many others, but i always want to push myself and besides is fun to learn something new, but more importantly learning 3d helps to understand level design much better also, right now i do painting, traditional clay sculpting, and 3d blockout in blender, havent done fully 3d work yet, but i want to be flexible between the two i dont want to be 3d all the way.

it was drilled into our heads at uni that we HAVE to meet our deadlines our it will cost us our job, and ok maybe in some graphic design companies that might happen, but it always bugged me that quality was sacrificed in order to meet those deadlines but thats probably why I'm not with a company and can work how ever long I want on a project. I know there can be very quick turn around times between briefs/projects but it often ends up with an end piece that doesnt fit or look right

Working on a piece for a friend right now, and that part about not rushing things you do for yourself or someone without a concrete deadline really hit me. Gonna take extra time to ensure it's really the best it can be, because it's not just another milestone piece for myself, but also something I really want to be proud of. Thanks for your industry insights, as always!

As someone who has no clients going at the moment, I'm struggling to finish pieces. Just feels like I'm second guessing myself and waffling back and forth. I'd love to do an art jam where we'd be just bouncing ideas back and forth until satisfied.

Then give yourself a deadline or join a challenge, like a monthly challenge (well now is inktober if it's still legal). It work for me, but yeah dont just believe me or trent or anyone, just try out yourself and hopefully you find what works for you. Good luck!

School made me think I have to master everything and ended up making me not enjoy what I liked to do instead of just honing in my niche and expand from there. So what you are saying is for sure...what I needed to hear. I should have said this to myself years ago instead turn into a hermit b/c I am so self consciouse.

Rough question, but do you think that you would be able to get a job with your current skill from scratch? No blizzard background and no Aquatic Moon business model, but the same level of your art, and you can make a portfolio from zero? Awesome video by the way, like usual. I cannot stop watching all of them.

I relate to this points of the video alot because rn I'm struggling to find a style/way of drawing that looks good and unique while also being reasonably fast enough to complete (since I want to make comics and meeting deadlines even self-imposed would still be a really helpful skill). I know the conventional artist wisdom is to just draw without worrying about style, but I also think taking the time to focus on this for now would save a lot of time and grief later on. It worries me a little because I'm also scared that I might drop the bar too low for myself if I decide to go with more simple rendering, but recently I've also been thinking "well if I'm gonna just have to go with lines and flat color, I'm still gonna strive to make it look professional af"

Thanks for the awesome content Trent! I just got a concept artist job at an art house as I ran into a new situation. When you're doing things like dozens of weapon variations or props, similar to what you did for your weapon design video, how do you keep coming up with mini stories for every weapon if the direction isnt exactly defined yet?
@TrentKaniuga

Sometimes its just a slight iteration or deviation on an existing design. If you have to do tons of them, the same story can be told a slightly different way.

In the game art program I went through in school, I was lucky enough to be taught how to quickly do matte paintings and illustrations by both a comic book artist who was working in the field and a concept artist in the gaming industry. They taught us the masked method, using clipping masks and photo bashing, and it dramatically sped up the process. The general idea they instilled was to come up with an art recipe and template that you can execute quickly if you have a tight deadline. It's helped me consistently knock out a fan art illustration a week for the past year, and Trent's words about pushing yourself and your recipe/template a little every time rings true.

I don't know, it took me 100 hours to finish a painting some time ago and it's not even exceptional, it's an ok work. I don't think I want to spend that amount of time on a piece again, it gets to a point that I can't stand to look at it anymore. Unfortunately, I'm slow at doing everything in my life, but it's specially annoying when drawing.

Love the artwork. Just the type of stuff I like 😍👌🏻. I had a question I've been thinking about for sometime. How do you think of details when it comes to creating environments or when you put the character in a scene? I look at your environment art and feel it is very rich in storytelling elements (details in structure design, elements around the structures, Character clothing) which makes me appreciate your art even more while I only can think of main structures and can't think of elements to add to the scene. I don't know whether it is the scenes I pick to draw that doesn't require much elements or my imagination is way behind.

Anxiety is not bad. But not being able to control your anxiety is bad. Losing control is the biggest enemy in every industry it causes burnouts, depression, and so much more stress related issues. Befriend your anxiety. Take a mental note what are you anxious about and do your best to make sure it wont happen.
@TrentKaniuga

I disagree. If you run away from challenges, you’ll never grow. Face the things that make you anxious, and you become stronger, and more capable. When you run away from fear and anxiety, you become weaker, and less capable.
