We observed these Black Swans in August which was within the reported breeding season of February to September and when water levels are high. After breeding, Black Swans moult their flight feathers rendering them unable to fly for approximately one month. During our time watching these Murchison River Black Swans we didn’t see them fly suggesting they may have already moutled.
When swimming they glide through the water with seemingly effortless ease and are truly amazing to watch.
Each morning the Black Swans would swim past us speeding at a fair pace. We only saw them swim down river and never up river. Did they swim up river at night then down river during the day.
If you have a view why not post a comment below.
Although Black Swans aren’t generally found in dry regions they can be found on inland rivers such as the Murchison River after good rains when the rivers are full of water.
These Black Swans (Cygnus atratus) were filmed on the upper Murchison River in Wajarri country of Western Australia and are known as Gurulhu in the language of the Wajarri. Black Swans (Cygnus atratus) look elegantly graceful when swimming.
Fun Fact 1:
Sometimes the Black Swan may be confused with the Australian Magpie Goose, also black and white (but not as pretty)
Fun Fact 2:
Up until the 1600’s the rest of the world thought all swans were white! That is until the early Dutch explorers visiting Western Australia and what is now called Perth when they saw Black Swans on the river and named it Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan)
